Chapter 11:
Damon: “Wake up little one…you’re dreaming. (Amara’s room). Are you okay? What were you dreaming about? You were screaming in your sleep. What did you see?”
Amara: “I don’t know but it was horrible. The place looked like a post-war battlefield but it felt like I was at a different time. Then I saw my hand, it was covered in blood and then I saw the ground getting flooded with blood. I felt agonizing pain in my chest as if it was the blood of the people I care about. My people. You know I’m a lucid dreamer. I know when I’m dreaming and I remind myself that it’s just a dream, so don’t freak out easily even when I’m having a nightmare. But this dream felt real, it was more like a memory of an event that I have really witnessed in the past. Sounds stupid right?”
In Damon’s head: Not at all. You started recalling the past of your people and where you're from. That was the blood of your people. Your people who butchered each other. The war that proved to be the damnation of an entire race as the prophecy that brought doom to your entire lineage.
Damon: “It was just a nightmare, little one. Forget it, don’t let it ruin your day.”
Amara: “You’re right, since when did I start letting some dreams mess with my head? I’m taking Rico to a place to practice the meditations that's helped me in the past. Maybe it’ll help him.”
Damon: “Okay. (an hour later by a lake)”
Amara: “Do you like this place?”
Rico: “Yes…it’s so beautiful.”
Amara: “And peaceful just like the way I wanted it.”
In Amara’s head: It’ll help him calm his mind.
Amara: “Here’s what you have to do. Let go of all the thoughts, basically empty your mind. Whatever bothers you, your fears, worries, forget everything. Observe my movements and try to emulate them. It would be difficult at first and I’m not asking you to do it with perfection, just try. Feel the scenery of this place and follow my steps.”
Rico: “Okay. (in the hallway)”
Ryan: “Where’s Rico? He started coming out of his room right? But I can’t find him.”
Aria: “Damon told me that he’s with Amara.”
Ryan: “And where’s Amara?”
Aria: “I don’t know.”
Ryan: “What?”
Aria: “I think they went outside.”
Ryan: “Without any guards?”
Aria: “Probably.”
Ryan: “You seem relaxed about it. You trust her that much, huh?”
Aria: “She’s the reason Rico is with us right now and because of her he came out of his room and ate properly yesterday. So I do trust her with my child but if you want I can go look for them.”
Ryan: “Leave it, I was going for a run anyway. I’ll find them.”
Aria: “Okay.”
In Ryan’s head: I could smell Rico’s scent. They’ve gone this way. That’s them but what are they practicing? If I’m not wrong it’s Tai Chi, an internal Chinese martial art practice for defense training, health benefits and meditation. I’m shocked at how she managed to make a four year old follow her every move and he’s doing it passionately. Is there anything she can’t do? Last year a few rogue wolves managed to enter the mansion, I was out for business at the time. Rico was attacked by one of those wolves. It shouldn’t have happened to a three year old kid. He was badly injured and wasn’t healing as he was suffering mentally. I came back as soon as I heard the news, those wolves paid for their crime. I gave Rico my blood, it healed him but it couldn’t erase the hideous sight of that attack from his memory. Our pack doctor and therapist said he would become a submissive wolf, not a dominant one. He’s weak physically as well as mentally. He’ll be able to hear his wolf voice at the age of seven like all the member of this pack and shift for the first time at the age of fourteen but whatever happened a few days back Willow said it’s nearly impossible for him to shift now, he can’t handle it. What could be more unfortunate than this for a wolf? Now I see hope. I see the fire in his eyes as we all inherited from our ancestors. What’s that smell? Pack members…
Pack Member2: “I swear that smell was coming from here.”
Ryan’s Mindlink: “Do not go near her.”
Pack Member’s Mindlink (both): “Alpha.”
Ryan’s Mindlink: “Leave…now!!”
Pack Member’s Mindlink (both): “Yes alpha.”
Amara: “You did really good. How are you feeling now, kiddo?”
Rico: “It was so good, Rico is feeling really happy and calm. And enthu…enthuz…”
Amara: “Enthusiastic.”
Rico: “Yes that.”
Ryan: “Are you gonna practice more?”
Amara: “No, we’re done for today.”
Ryan: “Let’s get going. (an hour later in the hallway)”
Walter: “Hey Amara!! I didn’t get a chance to say thank you for everything you’ve done and doing for Rico. Thank you for saving his life and I’m sorry for all the suffering it caused you.”
Amara: “You don’t have to say sorry or thank you. It was my choice to jump in front of those bullets and anyone would’ve done the same to save a kid.”
Walter: “Not everyone is you. No one would try to sacrifice their life for a kid they met a few days ago. It takes a lot of courage to even think about it but you did it without even thinking and I wanna know why?”
Amara: “It’s really simple. I knew Rico wouldn’t have survived that bullet but I would and I could either save him or stand there and wait for him to hit the ground then regret it for the rest of my life. It was an easy choice for me and I would do it again without hesitation. Not because I want people to praise me but because I can and it feels right to me.”
Walter: “We owe you a great deal of gratitude for what you did and there’s no way we can repay you for it and we’re appreciative that you’re here. We’re seeing improvement in Rico that we thought was impossible.”
Amara: “I’m glad I could help Rico. I hope I finish what I’ve started before leaving.”
Walter: “I’m sorry about what happened yesterday. I apologize for my sister’s behavior.”
Amara: “You don’t have to apologize for anything. She’s your sister? Not biological?”
Walter: “Yeah, my parents adopted her when she was only six.”
In Amara’s head: I see. I can clearly see the difference. I mean I’ve met his mother, she’s such a sweet lady and his sister is nothing like her.
Luca: “Good morning Amara.”
Amara: “Morning Luca, what’s up?”
Luca: “I’m here to inform Walter we will leave in five minutes for the hospital.”
Amara: “Hospital, why? You mentioned yesterday Benz is there. What happened?”
Luca: “He was shot that night.”
In Amara’s head: He was shot by that weapon and he’s still alive?
Amara: “Can I come with you?”
Luca: “Why not.”
In Luca’s head: Boss will be happy to have you. (at the hospital)
In Ryan’s head: Control your anger. She’s just checking his wounds and for that she has to put her beautiful fingers on his body. Not a big deal and definitely not something you should be angry at. Just calm down, but Azrael isn’t making it easy for me to keep my calm. Will you calm down? What are you growling like that? Azrael? Why have you been behaving strangely since last night? Yeah…why would you answer me?
Luca: “I didn’t know you’re a part-time doctor too.”
Amara: “I’m not a doctor Luca. I’m just a part-time reader and that’s why I have knowledge. My free time is also spent getting rid of uninvited people in my room.”
Enric: “What are you planning to do with him?”
Amara: “I’m planning on poisoning him.”
Enric: “Are you sure she’s not someone who ran away from the psychiatric hospital?”
Amara: “The number of stem cells in our bone marrow declines as we age which takes fractures longer to heal. You know that right? In short, if you break your bones it'll take you much longer to heal.”
Enric: “I’m gonna go see other patients.”
Amara: “Okay, I’m done.”
Ryan: “And…?”
Amara: “I wanna try something on him. It seems as if he’s been bitten by an inland taipan and his wound isn’t healing at all. So I wanna treat him with an herb. Precisely, a poisonous herb.”
Ryan: “How do you know if it’ll work and won’t kill him?”
Amara: “I don’t. It’ll sound rude but let’s be honest. He’s dying, he doesn’t have too much time left. Either you try something or not, his death is inevitable. So why not take a risk and try to save him and if he survived this long then there’s a higher chance he would survive there and it'll cure him.”
Ryan: “Walter? Luca?”
Luca: “We should take the risk.”
Ryan: “Do what you have to do. At least we won’t regret that we didn’t even try. (Ryan’s phone rings). I’m gonna take this.”
Walter: “Where will we get this herb? Do you have it with you or do you know where we can purchase it from?”
Amara: “I don’t have it but I know where we can find it. We’re lucky there’s a place close by at a distance of 80 km, that might have a large number of those herbs we’re looking for. Luca, you go get them, it’ll take you around two hours if I’m not wrong.”
Luca: “Okay, give me the address and I need to know what that herb looks like.”
Amara: “Karl, send the address and a picture of that plant to Luca’s phone.”
Luca: “You mean siri, right?”
Amara: “No, I mean Karl. There, you have it. (at the mansion two hours later in lockup)”
Ryan: “I want you to tell me everything you know, Emmett and keep in mind, no lies or I won’t be so polite with you anymore. Tell me why you said they’ll come after her. Why would they waste their time chasing a mere human?”
Emmett: “You and I both know she’s not human. It’s impossible for a human to radiate that kind of power. Humans can’t force us to lose control.”
Ryan: “What do you mean by that?”
Emmett: “You don’t know? Any being that's around her is compelled to lose control by her presence, by her scent. Have you ever smelled something like that before? She awakens the beast that lives inside of us. Maybe you haven’t noticed because you’re pack members respect you so much and fear you enough that they wouldn’t dare try anything with her but take her to another pack and you’ll see what I’m talking about. They won’t be able to contain themselves, especially the unmated wolves. Not just that, she’s powerful. Do you really think if The Legion knows about her, they’ll leave her alone? They’ll try everything to bring her on their side. They don’t make me say what they’re capable of doing. They’re the real monsters, Diavolo. You know what they do. They fucking destroyed my pack, killed my people, didn’t even spare the infants. Took all the she-wolves with them, those who resisted were killed brutally. They probably even killed my son, my last reason to stay alive. You better prepare yourself because I can tell you there’s a war coming your way and think how you’re gonna save her from them. She’s alone but there are thousands of them. I wanna come with you, I was the best tracker of my pack and only I can recognize Connar’s scent. Let me track him.”
Ryan: “Why would you do that?”
Emmett: “I wanna avenge my son, my pack. Give me twenty hours. That would be enough time for me to find Connar.”
Ryan: “And if you run away?”
Emmett: “I won’t, there’s nothing left for me. I have nowhere to go and why would I run away when I know you can easily hunt me down?”
Ryan: “Fair enough. You have twenty four hours and I’ll send two men with you. Loris and Gabrielle. (an hour later in the woods)”
Gabrielle: “Don’t fall behind wolfie. (that night Amara’s room)”
Damon: “Amara.”
Amara: “Yes Drako, come in.”
Damon: “Where were you this evening and how are you feeling?”
Amara: “I’m better and I was in the hospital. Luca came back with the herb I asked him to bring so I was making the healing paste and liquid to treat Benz’s wound.”
Damon: “Are you talking about that poisonous herb that you use to treat your wounds?”
Amara: “Yes.”
Damon: “Was your goal to heal him or speed up his death?”
Amara: “Maybe both. He’ll be healed if it didn’t kill him.”
Damon: “Nik called. I have to leave for DC tomorrow.”
Amara: “And when will you come back?”
Damon: “Probably in three days.”
Amara: “Okay, in case that piece of shit pretends to not have any knowledge of that attack then you’re gonna call me. I’d love to refresh his memory.”
Damon: “Don’t worry, he’s nothing I can’t handle. I’ve been meaning to ask you, what happened to that stalker? Did you find anything?”
Amara: “He’s in Thessaloniki, Greece.”
In Damon’s head: I know someone who lives there. I should pay him a visit.
Damon: “So you’re not gonna go after him?”
Amara: “I don’t need to. Something tells me he’s gonna come here again and when he does I’ll get my questions answered.”
Damon: “Have I ever told you how supremely guileful you are?”
Amara: “Once or twice. (the next day that evening Ryan’s office)”
Emmett: “That fucker fleed the country. He’s in Athens, Greece.”
Ryan: “And his boss?”
Loris: “Yes that cockroach is there and they’re not alone. There are rogue vampires and wolves. They’re sleeping with one eye open if you ask me.”
Ryan: “As they should. What’s their exact location?”
Emmett: “Near Mount Hymettus.”
Ryan: “We all know who else resides in those mountains? The Legion.”
Loris: “What’s on your mind?”
Ryan: “It’s clear now. They were all hired by The Legion.”
Loris: “If so, then why didn’t they go to the Legion territory? They could’ve been safe from us if they sheltered there.”
Ryan: “Because they failed and we all know that The Chamber doesn’t give second chances. If they had gone there they would've been killed.”
Loris: “Makes sense.”
Ryan: “It’s been a long time since we last visited them and it’d be rude if we go there without presents. After all, they’re our so-called ‘Rulers’. We’re gonna hunt those people who dare to attack us, because of them we lost eleven members of our pack. We lost our brothers who were murdered in cold blood. Now is the time we have benched them by spilling the blood of those who were behind that attack. Walter, you’ll be in charge until we’re back. Luca, Loris, Renato and Gabreille, you guys are coming with me and of course Emmett, you deserve those fuckers blood. We leave tomorrow at 10:00 a.m and Aria, keep your sister alive away from Amara. I’m too busy for another funeral. (the next day outside the mansion). We’ll leave in ten minutes, say your goodbyes.”
In Amara’s head: There’s so much chaos today. Everyone is rushing, they’ll leave in a few minutes, including Drako. I don’t know why I agreed not to get involved in this.
Emmett: “Thank you.”
Amara: “For what? I didn’t do anything. In fact, I kinda manipulated you into telling the things they wanted to know.”
Emmett: “No, but you encouraged me to face the truth and avenge my son.”
Amara: “I’m sorry about your son, but I also know my sorrow won’t ease your pain.”
Emmett: “I don’t know if this revenge will make me feel any better or bring me peace.”
Amara: “I’m not one of those people who thinks taking revenge is weakness. I feel it takes a lot to gather the courage to avenge the death of your loved ones. And no one has the right to stop you from taking revenge because they haven’t experienced the pain you have.”
Emmett: “So you would’ve done the same?”
Amara: “No. I would’ve done far worse.”
Emmett: “What would happen? I lost everything. Nowhere to go, nothing to hold on to.”
Amara: “Are you asking me for advice?”
Emmett: “I am.”
Amara: “How old are you?”
Emmett: “Thirty six.”
Amara: “Isn’t it weird to ask a twenty one year old for advice when you have more experience than I do?”
Emmett: “No, it isn’t weird because I know you’re nothing what you appear to be. You’re no ordinary twenty one year old girl.”
Amara: “You’re the first one who didn’t underestimate me. Life is a bitch, it puts you through things you don’t deserve. There were times I felt like I lost everything. I had no one who could tell me that everything was gonna be okay, I had no place to call home. I refused to give up. Life had thrown me into the darkness many times but I kept walking even in the darkness hoping I would see the light of day one day. If I had chosen to stand there I wouldn’t have found myself where I am today. One thing I’ve learned is nothing’s permanent, not even your pain. You get a lot stronger with time. Pain fades and wounds might leave scars but those scars tell you what you’ve been through and that you never gave up. It motivates you to keep going and who knows, maybe you’ve already found your purpose. Perhaps you’ve already found a place where you’ve always meant to be. It’s for you to find out.”
Emmett: “Thank you for telling me what I needed to hear.”
Amara: “Of course.”
In Amara’s head: Why is he coming this way?
Ryan: “I thought you were coming with us but to my surprise you didn’t show interest.”
Amara: “Drako wants me to stay out of it.”
Ryan: “I didn’t take you for someone to be this obedient.”
Amara: “And I didn’t take you for someone to be this delusional. I don’t obey anyone, I just do what feels right.”
Ryan: “That’s more like you. Give me your phone.”
Amara: “Why?”
Ryan: “I can save my number and if something happens and my absence you can call.”
Amara: “Don’t worry, I know your number. It’s 3***********.”
Ryan: “You’ve memorized my number?”
Amara: “Don’t look so shocked. It’s just a ten digit number, not a whole telephone directory. I just needed to look at it once and yes, if anything happens and your absence I’ll call you. But after I’m done dealing with that situation.”
Ryan: “Why are you like this?”
Amara: “Like what?”
In Ryan’s head: Like a dream which is too good to be true.
Ryan: “Never mind. Take care and as your brother always says, stay out of trouble.”
Amara: “You too.”
Ryan: “I too what?”
Amara: “Take care of yourself.”
In Ryan’s head: ‘Take care of yourself’. Simple words made me smile like an idiot. I don’t know if she cares about me but the look on her face while saying those words made me believe she does. I have to stay away from her, she isn’t cut out for my world. It’s dangerous for her, not because she can’t handle the danger, because she’s unaware about the world of mine. She doesn’t know creatures like us exist and some of us don’t even have souls. At this point, I’m not concerned about the reason why I care about her so much. I just do and I hope no harm comes her way and my absence or else no one will be safe for me. (twenty minutes later in the living room)
Amara: “Take care, brother.”
Damon: “Don’t worry little one, I’ll be back before you know it. ”
In Ryan’s head: Enjoy your last moments as you can. I’m coming for you all.
