Chapter 16
Vaughn has been on the phone with her mother for the past hour now, she is complaining about how she has been trying to reach VK the whole day and there has been nothing from him. Whilst on the call she even asked me to try and reach him and like her mother has said, his line is going unanswered. Though I don’t understand why she really wants to talk to him because as far as I am concerned they are no longer together and it shouldn’t be a big deal whether he is available or not.
Finally Vaughn drops the call and she looks like the stress has just been transferred to her.
‘What’s the big deal though?’
‘Some family business that we need to deal with.’
I raise an eyebrow, I don’t know why she can’t trust me with information concerning the business.
‘Vaughn I am your husband.’ I say reminding her
‘I know and eventually I will let you in on everything.’
I look at her wordlessly, I honestly don’t know why she just can’t open up.
‘Okay, the meeting that dad went for in Livingstone.’
‘Yes?’
‘So a branch is opening there and the board voted that Kasweka goes there to manage it but dad turned it down.’
‘Why is that though? And is it even possible for his word to be higher than the word of the body?’
‘Not exactly but he has more shares; but mine, Ernest’s and mum’s combined are more than his.’
‘Okay.’
‘So she wants us to talk to the board so that Kasweka goes.’
‘But why does mum want her to go?’
‘Mum is just being mum, she is in that habit of going against dad’s decisions. I love her yes but most times I feel like she just crosses through line hey, like there is no reason for her to be behaving like that. They divorced years ago but she makes it look like she hasn’t moved on and that alone leaves me questioning her.’
I go over to where she is sitted and start massaging her shoulders, they are tense. This whole thing is eating her up.
‘In my own opinion I think it’s good that Kasweka is being sent to Livingstone, I think it will be good for her.’
‘Why?’
‘Babe, she has never been my favorite person but the poor girl just got dumped and then her ex is now her boss’s husband. Do you know what that must be doing to her?’
I don’t want to think about it, it’s the least of my worries right now.
‘Coming to think of it, why doesn’t dad want her to go to Livingstone?’
‘You should know that, how is her input at the office?’
She sighs deeply and doesn’t respond, I know Kasweka is good at her job. That is something no one can lie about.
‘Let me step out, I need to meet someone.’
‘Alright babe, bring me something nice.’
I kiss her lips before walking out of the house, honestly I just want to go and see Kasweka. I don’t know why but I feel like I need to see her.
I get into that car and dial her number but it goes unanswered, I don’t understand why she is developing this habit of not picking up phone calls because it is frustrating and gets on my nerves.
I open my WhatsApp before driving out and go and check if she had posted something on here status, well she has - she is at a very expensive hotel holding a glass of wine and smiling. From the way the photo looks and the place where it was taken one can tell how expensive it is, I feel a tug at my heart and anger builds up. I know everything about get and it’s not possible that she can be out alone, she has definitely met someone and I want to know who that person is.
..
I wake up feeling relaxed, I didn’t think when VK told me to dress up that we would be flying over to Namibia to have dinner at a hotel I could never think of. One I could never afford to eat from even if I saved up for a year.
He is snoring lightly and I take time to just admire his face, for the next couple of minutes he snores lightly until he opens his eyes with a smile.
‘You just realized how old I am yes?’ He teases
‘Your energy is that of a young man, I would never guess.’
He laughs
‘Tell me something about you that your father doesn’t know.’
‘What?’
‘I know there should be something.’
I sigh heavily, trying to think of something.
‘Oh yes.’
‘Go on.’
‘So dad and his young brother are not the best of friends, they are close yes but what dad doesn’t know is that I talk to his brother almost all the time and he knows all my secrets.’
‘Really now?’
‘The thing is, yes he and Uncle Mphatso have history but that shouldn’t affect my relationship with him yes?’
‘Yes.’
‘So that is my stance.’
‘Have you ever tried to find out what it is about their past that has made them the way they are?’
I shake my head
‘It’s their past, I wasn’t there and it is none of my business. There is no way I am about to involve myself in their drama.’
He laughs, he really looks beautiful when he does.
‘I need to tell you something.’
‘Okay.’
‘So the board voted that you should be sent to Livingstone for work, to be the property manager that side.’
I raise an eyebrow
‘I voted against it.’
‘Why?’
‘I couldn’t bare having you far away.’
‘That’s it?’
‘I know I shouldn’t have, I know I should have let them send you away but I am not about to have you in a different province.’
‘But you are never at the office, and you have meetings out of the country almost very time.’
‘I have eyes on the Lusaka office and I like knowing that I can come to your home and make it my own, I am sorry for doing it without consulting you.’
I sigh deeply, I don’t know how to feel. This would have been good for me not seeing Nelson and Vaughn but it looks like I have entangled myself in another relationship and I need to be close.
‘Next time talk to me first.’
‘Next time I will.’
‘Awesome.’ I say kissing his lips lightly
‘So when am I meeting this uncle Mphatso?’
‘Why?’
‘Why not?’
I laugh trying to hide what am truly feeling, how do I introduce him to my people? As what? When he is almost the same age as them.
