chapter 30
Emily sat in her giant bird cage, her angel wings twitching as she sat there with her legs folded in front of her. She sighed. Why did her heart hurt so much. Why did she feel like something wasn’t right.
She felt her head begin to hurt.
In her mind flashed dozens of pictures. Of Alison in a mortuary. Of the Soulless attacking her brother and his girlfriend and of Alison struggling to fight them with the athame the two of them had bought together.
It was terrible to watch and it brought tears to Emily’s eyes. Was this real? Is this what was happening back on earth?0
She felt her wings twitch.
Her body glowed and from beneath the cloth over her chest her heart began to glow. An energy poured out of her. She closed her eyes and the energy burst from her body, sending out a glowing power to earth.
Alison tried with all her might to push off the soulless as they crawled over her. They weren’t as strong as the one she had fought weeks before but they were still pretty strong. She tried stabbing at them with her athame but the tool was useless. It did nothing and only seemed to agitate them, nothing like the night she had killed her first soulless.
She felt powerless.
Josh was running toward Elizabeth and pulling her out from underneath one of the dead when a soulless grabbed his arm, scalding his shirt and burning it to his skin, sending a burning signal down his shoulder. He yelled out loud, ripping his shoulder away and trying to help Elizabeth to her feet.
A voice sounded. Gentle and sweet and one she recognized from not so long ago.
“Alison...” Emily’s voice sounded. “Alison...”
Alison felt strength once more and she felt as if she could hear Emily talking to her. Emily spoke to her in her mind. “Get the main one. The rest are just illusions. Use your athame and get the one that appeared first to you.”
Alison ran forward with her athame. It hadn’t worked on the corpses and seemed to slip through the dummy soulless’s dopplegangers, but surely this time, it would work. She ran forward, plunging the athame into the Soulless’s chest.
It stared in wonder at the blade and at Alison before beginning to turn back to liquid. The rest of the soulless dopplegangers turned to water and the two walking dead crumpled to the ground.
“Damned it all Messenger,” the Soulless spoke. “You know not what you do... Not what you do.” He turned to liquid and Alison stared blankly at the monster she had killed’s liquid puddle it had left behind.
What?
What the hell was that supposed to mean? “You know not what you do?” Like she was the bad guy or something. How strange.
She glanced over at Josh who was smiling at her and waving, holding Elizabeth in his arms. Thank god they were okay? She had been so scared.
So scared.
“You know not what you do... Not what you do.”
Alison... The Soulless are here. You must be careful.
