Chapter 62
Chapter 62 Unexpected
"Oh, so you've got someone backing you up now, daring to oppose me?" Carol was angry. "But your boyfriend doesn't even dare to show his face, still wearing a mask. Could he be some kind of fugitive?" Emily was about to say something when Mr. Satan intervened, still calm and composed. "If I were a fugitive, what do you think would happen to you for bullying my girlfriend like this?"
Carol's face instantly paled, taking a few steps back, warily watching him. "What are you planning? Let me tell you, if you dare to harm me, my son won't spare you!"
"I'm already a fugitive, what's another life on my hands? What do you think?"
As he took a step forward, Carol turned and ran back into the mansion, shouting in panic, "Son! Nathan! Call the police!"
Emily was a bit worried, "Maybe you should leave first? If she really calls the police, you'll have to take off your mask."
"Emily, are you worried about me?"
Emily lightly pushed him, "I'm talking about serious matters here."
"I'm not joking either, Emily. I really want to marry you right away."
Emily listened, just smiling lightly. She didn't feel as ecstatic as before. "Maybe... Let's wait. Wait until you've sorted out your affairs, until you've told me all the truth, then I'll consider it." This morning's events had rung another alarm bell for her; she couldn't sink into the trap of tenderness again.
She needed to be clear-headed and rational enough.
Suddenly, a terrified scream echoed from the mansion.
"Ah-"
Both Emily and Mr. Satan heard it; Emily recognized the source of the scream first. "It's Sophia!"
Mr. Satan's face turned serious. "Let's go, check inside."
Nathan and Sophia were upstairs; Emily was practically pulled by Mr. Satan all the way up the stairs. Before they reached the door, Sophia's cries came from inside.
"It hurts... Nathan, save me... save our baby!"
Carol started screaming too, "Blood! There's blood! Hurry, save the heir of the Reed family!"
The door was flung open from inside.
Nathan rushed out, holding Sophia, and collided with Emily and Mr. Satan.
He glanced at the mask on Mr. Satan's face, then finally locked eyes with Emily. "Emily, just give me a little more time."
"What time do you need? Hurry, take her to the hospital! What if we lose the heir of our family?"
Carol urged beside him, and Nathan dared not delay further. He ran downstairs with Sophia; soon, the roar of an engine echoed from the yard as Nathan drove Sophia to the hospital. The mansion, just noisy moments ago, became silent in an instant.
Emily gently pushed open the door, only to see Bert crouched on the ground, holding his head, his shoulders trembling uncontrollably.
A tall man had shrunk into a ball, burying his face in his knees, his knuckles white from clenching.
"Uncle..." Emily cautiously crouched beside Bert, softly saying, "Are you okay?"
"I didn't mean to..." Bert's voice was
muffled. "I just wanted to take Sophia away from here, but she insisted on breaking free from me was afraid of hurting her, so I let go, but then she fell, hitting her belly against the wall... Emily, please go check on Sophia at the hospital. I'm afraid something might happen to her..."
Bert's eyes were red, his shoulders drooping.
Emily was concerned. "With Nathan and Carol there, they'll accompany Sophia. Uncle, did Nathan lay hands on you just now?"
"No, he's been criticizing Sophia all along. I got angry and argued with him, but I didn't lay a hand on him."
Emily breathed a sigh of relief; at least he hadn't resorted to violence.
"Emily, I really didn't lose my temper today. I've been trying to persuade Sophia, but... do you think Nathan has cast some spell on her? Why does she insist on marrying him?" This was a question Emily couldn't answer.
Did she have to bluntly tell her uncle that Sophia wasn't as innocent as she acted, that she had plotted to drive her away?
Emily didn't know how to explain, so she simply said, "Perhaps they truly love each other. Uncle, let's not meddle in their affairs, alright? Sophia chose her path, let her walk it."
Bert, feeling irritated, ran his fingers through his hair. "Fine, I'm fine. Just let me be alone for a while. You go check on Sophia first. If something happens to her baby, I'll truly become a sinner." Emily was still a bit worried.
Mr. Satan seemed to sense
something though. He patted Emily's shoulder. "Men should handle men's affairs. Leave your uncle to me. You go to the hospital and see how things are going f
Sophia indeed miscarries, your uncle might face criminal charges. We need to be prepared to deal with
them in advance."
Emily's heart sank upon hearing this.
Sophia was capable of doing such things. The child in her belly was her bargaining chip into the Reed family. If she lost the child, she'd be beside herself with rage!
She gritted her teeth and nodded. "I'll go first. As for my uncle..."
"Don't worry, I'll talk to him. I'll take him to the hospital to be with your father later."
Emily finally felt reassured. She turned and called a taxi, heading straight to the hospital.
...
Outside the obstetrics and gynecology department, Carol and Nathan were both there. Carol paced anxiously, while Nathan sat in a nearby resting area, listening to music.
Carol scolded him, "Your child is still in danger, and you're in the mood to listen to music?"
Nathan didn't even look up. "It wouldn't be so bad if the child was lost."
To him, Sophia had been using the child to threaten him every day, yelling and screaming. He was tired of this version of Sophia and didn't want to spend another minute with her. Besides, he had Emily in his heart now. Would she accept him if the child miscarried?
"What are you saying? That's your child, the future heir!"
"I'll have sons and heirs in the future too, it's not like missing out on this one means it's all over."
Just then, the door of the examination room swung open. The doctor, with a grave expression, asked, "Which one of you has blood type A? Sophia has lost too much blood and needs a transfusion. Hurry to the blood-drawing room and wait!"
