Chapter 59
Chapter 59 Mother-in-law
Emily watched coldly, feeling it all rather ridiculous.
Retribution came too quickly. Just a month ago, she was ignominiously driven out of the Reed household by Sophia, who was still flaunting her power. Yet now, with the three of them gathered again, the scene had transformed in an unexpected way. But the pressing issues still needed addressing.
Emily let out a heavy breath. "Sophia, I'm here today just to make things clear with you. You know Bert's temper. He's already aware of what's going on between you and Nathan and is on his way here. I came early to intercept him, to prevent more serious consequences. If you want to protect your child, to preserve your hopes of marrying into the Reed family, then go back to your room now, lock the door, and don't come out no matter what happens. Otherwise, you'll face the consequences alone." Sophia's face turned pale as soon as she heard it: "How could Bert suddenly come back?"
Emily coldly snorted. "My father almost lost his life, wouldn't he come back? Do you think everyone is like you, with a heart as poisonous as a snake's?"
Sophia didn't deny it; she was already in a panic.
William and Bert, the two brothers, had entirely different temperaments. William was easy-going, easily bullied, while Bert was a veritable powder keg, hot-tempered and prone to impulsiveness.
If he found out about her situation, the consequences would be dire.
Seeing her biting her lip and remaining silent, Emily twisted her brows. "Aren't you leaving? Bert will be here soon."
The next moment, Sophia was running back to the Reed house.
Just a few steps into her dash, she collided with Carol, who had rushed out.
"Ouch-" Carol staggered backward from the impact, grabbing onto a nearby tree to steady herself. "Sophia, were you even looking where you were going? I feel like I've broken something."
Sophia stopped in her tracks, gritting her teeth. She wanted to help her, but she was afraid Bert might arrive the next second.
"Mom, I just lightly bumped into you, it's not that serious, right?"
"How is it not serious? Did you do it on purpose?"
Sophia was furious, but with Nathan still watching nearby, she could only help Carol stand up. As soon as she steadied herself, Sophia immediately let go and said, "Mom, I'm feeling a bit unwell. I'll go back to my room first." She turned and ran off.
As Sophia disappeared from view, Carol muttered behind her, "It's like she's seen a ghost..."
Nathan had approached from a distance and helped Carol sit on a nearby bench. "Mom, why did you come out? Are you okay?"
Clutching Nathan's hand, Carol cried out in distress, "Nathan, I feel like I'm dying..."
"Sophia just bumped into you lightly..."
"Lightly? How is that not serious?" Carol widened her eyes. "What would you consider serious then? Does she have to push me down the stairs for it to be serious?"
Nathan was most annoyed by Carol's constant overreactions; there was a hint of impatience on his face. "What are you saying? How could she dare to push you intentionally?" "Emily, come and help me. Help me back to the house," Carol suddenly called out to her.
Emily looked on coldly, standing still.
Carol became furious. "What's with your attitude? Aren't you going to listen to my words? You won't even come over and help when I'm injured?"
Emily sneered. "I'm not your daughter-in-law anymore. You can call Sophia to help you."
uj
"If you're not my daughter-in-law, why are you here in my house? You slammed the door and left just like that. I have hypertension; I can't handle shock. What if something happens? Can you bear that responsibility?"
Emily coldly laughed, her gaze sharp. "You have hypertension? Didn't you go bungee jumping last month?"
"Hey, what's with your tone? You've only left a month and you dare to talk back to me without me educating you, huh?" Carol pointed at Emily, exasperated, and turned to Nathan. "Nathan, look at her attitude!"
Emily replied coldly, "You didn't have
high blood pressure even after
bungee jumping, but you suddenly have it after Sophia lightly bumped into you? Carol, although I'm reluctant to defend Sophia, she barely touched you, far from 'bumping' you. There's surveillance here. Why don't we find the footage for your son to see? Are you made of glass or something?"
Nathan was in a dilemma, his face showing signs of discomfort. "Mom, please stop this nonsense. I'm tired of your tricks. If you still want to live in my villa, I advise you to be reasonable."
"You... Emily, you... Nathan, divorce her! You must divorce her!"
Carol, panting, with anger, pointed at
Emily, then at Nathan, and sneered, "I get it now. You're still harboring

feelings for this bitch, aren't you? The moment she showed up today, you couldn't wait to chase after her. Nathan, are you willing to give up even your mother for a woman now?"
Here it comes again.
It's the familiar script, the familiar taste.
