Chapter 20 by Lorelei Thunder
“It’s not easy to make the list of best partners. I think we shouldn’t act rashly.
Pamela frowned. “It’s already hard enough to maintain our current status. I think you know that there are a lot of people who are jealous of us.”
Trudy’s eyes widened in shock. It was like she was disappointed in Pamela. She raised her voice, saying, “That’s why we have to take this chance to improve our status. With how the Cartwrights favor York Corporation, we should be able to pull it off.
“They helped us three years ago and have been looking out for us since. That’s the best proof that we’re going to make it!”
Pamela smiled bitterly. “It’s not as simple as you think it is, Mom. Even now, we don’t know why the Cartwrights have been helping us. We shouldn’t be so hasty.”
“How is that hasty?”
Dickson began to analyze the situation arrogantly. “We should take the risk. Who knows? We could gain a lot from it. Even if it doesn’t pan out, we’ll just maintain the status quo. We won’t lose anything.
“The Cartwrights must find our company’s future to be promising. Maybe they’re interested in you individually. Or maybe they have been helping us all along. No matter what it is, this is our chance!”
Trudy quickly agreed, saying, “That’s right! You have to seize the opportunity before someone else takes it from you. Also, you can ask your friends for more information on the situation.”
Pamela was tempted. If they got on the list of best partners, projects worth millions would be waiting for them. They would be able to make a lot of money even if they only get a small part in those projects.
She thought about the fleet of luxury cars and towering buildings the Cartwrights owned. Those were the goals she was working toward.
“Alright, I’ll go make preparations.”
Pamela left the ward. She felt bad that she couldn’t stay and take care of her family. She went to the bank and deposited some money for Trudy and Brutus as a token of apology.
Back in the ward of the villa, Helen said courteously, “Mr. Henderson, please allow me to get someone to drive you to the hotel.”
“There’s no need. I have other matters to tend to.”
Some matters could never be resolved by running away. He would still have to face them head-on eventually.
Woody didn’t have a lot of relatives in the city. His parents used to be part of a scientific expedition team. They mysteriously went missing while he was a sophomore in high school. He had heard nothing about them since.
From then onward, Shane Evans, his parents’ best friend and a professor of history at the University of Tiusto, took care of Woody.
The Evans family treated him like one of their own. They took good care of him until he graduated from university.
Woody didn’t disappoint. He excelled in various fields while he was in university and managed to gain a foothold in the city after graduation. He even got a pretty girlfriend. Life was good for him.
Shane was so excited that he cried when he attended Woody and Pamela’s wedding.
Woody didn’t tell Shane the truth when he took the fall for his brother-in-law. He felt like he had let the Evans family down.
He planned to treat Shane better, make up for the lost years, and do his best to care for him until his final days after he got out of prison.
But he got divorced as soon as he was released from prison. Four years of his life was for naught. He didn’t know how to tell Shane the truth back then.
After resolving the Cartwrights’ issue, he decided to meet with Shane and tell him everything.
He couldn’t imagine how heartbroken Shane would be when he learned the truth.
But what was done was done. He couldn’t keep it from Shane forever.
Woody collected his emotions as he walked away.
