Chapter 16
Chapter Sixteen
I don’t think I was thinking when I ran.
I didnt think of the consequences of mu actions.
I just ran and ran and when I was out of breath, I didn’t stop.
Ireached my car and jumped in, shoving the key in the hole and bringing the engine to life.
The car roared and sprung forward, my feet pressing on the gas pedal with as much force as possible, ignorant to the obvious cameras hung by the traffic signs.
I reached the usually fifteen minutes ride to the hospital in less than ten minutes and parked the car carelessly to the side.
My feet did all the thinking for me. With every step I grew closer and closer until I slammed into the Service area.
“Blade Russell,” I choked out, breathlessly.
“Family visitors on-”
“I’m his sister!” I interrupted.
She raised her eyebrows at me,” Second floor, room 28, follow the yellow tiles to-”
But I was already gone. I reached theelevator and shoved my body in before the doors closed.
I ignored the people inside and pushed on the number two button, shaking anxiously as the doors closed.
When they reopened again, I sprung forward and ran around, searching for room 28 but I became more confused when the hallways became slimmer and stranger.
I looked at the sign besidesthe elevators that read basement and cried out loud in frustration.
I ran towards the stairs and flung open the door to floor 2, comingface to face with room 28.
I went to turn the knob but the door opened and the same doctor that talked to me last time stepped out.
“Emerald, right?” he began and closed the door.
I paused halfway on my tippy toes, attempting to steal a quick glance at blade inside and sigh.
“Can you move please? I gotta-” I began to snap but he stepped forward, pushing me back with him.
“Emerald, emerald, relax,” he grabbed my shaking hands,” he’ll be fine. Nothing Serious. It’s the same thing that happened to you last time.”
“Nothing serious expect the fact that his wolf is separating from him!” I snapped,” this is all my fault-”
“It’s not your fault only,it’s both your faults.”
I finally managed to get back my bruisedhand and looked at him,” this is not the time to confront me about this! He needs me-”
“He does need you, but you need to know this more. If you two don’t find a way to be together, you’ll both be fainting all the time for your whole life! It’ll be hell!”
“But the packs-”
“Find a way emerald! I know I don’t know you much, but from what I’ve seen, you only look at the obvious. You don’t look at the possibly of life that might just possibly save your life!”
“Like what?” I yelled,” like become a traitor to my own damn pack and form some type of secret relationship with him?”
“That’s one idea,” he said.
“No its not! I can’t just betray my pack-”
“Would you rather you become a blob of flesh?”
I became silenced. My eyes trailed down to my stained shoes,” I gotta go see him.”
“Go see him, but don’t let him suffer because you can’t handle breaking a few rules.”
“You think I don’t suffer-”
But he was already gone, leaving the air of tension and regret slither with unsaid words of misery.
I entered Blades room, not as anxiousas before, uncertain with the way I’d greet him now.
I stood back with intimidation when I saw his bed circled with the members of his pack.
“What the-” Marshall began.
“what the hell is she doing here?” someone snapped.
“Sorry,” I muttered through my tear stained lips,” W-wrong room.”
As I walked away, I heard their drifting voices through the closing gap mutter about how messed up I looked.
I sat in the waiting area for who knows how long, watching the door that never opened.
They all stayed there and the phone calls I’d missed remind me every so often of the time. That its only been an hour or so. That I still sat in the same waiting area, in the same slippery chairs, and I wasn’t seated on a cloud of depression.
I’d drift away, my vision blurring, my ears ringing with noises I don’t wanna hear.
Sometimes I made out words, words that startled me.
I thought of what I’d do after this. Would I keep on going, pretending like we aren’t mates?
I had to find a way, somehow to fool our wolves.
But how do you fool something that became part of your conscience?
I woke up three hours later to the sound of heavy rain splashing down on pavement.
I caught myself before I slipped down fully from the plastic hospital chair and opened my blurred eyes to see the window besides me opened.
I closed it, shivering from the cold winter breeze and checked the time.
4:30
School must have ended an hour ago.
I got up and stretched, walking around to Blades room.
I opened the door a bit and risked the chances of his pack members still being there but there was no one.
I walked in, distracting myself with the sound of my shoes and stood awkwardly besides him.
I wanted to hold his hand.
Should I? Nobody was around.
And so I did. My fingers circled around his own. They tangled themselves and rubbed together with his, enjoying the limited pleasure.
He woke up about two minutes later.
His eyes bore into my own, and we spoke no words.
We drifted in the silence and let out gazes communicate.
He broke the silence ten minutes later to say ,” Come here.”
I let myself go just this once and lay next to him. We held our weak, bruised bodies together and fell asleep, tangled in each others arms.
The loud sound of beeps jolted me awake. I fell off the bed and landed on the hard ground.
I moaned in pain and stood up.
Memories flooded my brain and my eyes drifted to where Blade was still asleep.
I searched for the sound. It came from a small black machine that had green lines on it.
I pressed the off button and fell on the chair besides the bed, almost slipping down in process.
Stupid rubber chairs.
The sound of my fail must have woken Blade up because he lay on the bed, a noticeable smirk on his tired but handsome face.
“What?” I snapped, holding on to the arms of the chairs.
He shrugged,” Nothing.”
We sit in silence until he broke it with the same words as yesterday.
“Come here.”
I stood up and walked to where he was.
He sat up and pulled me down on his lap. He began to play with my hair and I shivered at the comfort.
“You’re an idiot.”
I felt his chest vibrate as he laughed,” Why?”
I shrugged,” I need someone to be mad at.”
“I’ll sacrifice myself.”
“You don’t have a choice.”
We stayed silent for a moment.
“What now?” he spoke.
“I don’t know.”
“What do we do next?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do you think it will get better?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re helpful.”
“I know,” I smirked lightly towards him.
“That’s the only thing you know?”
“I don’t know.”
We drifted in silence until I muttered with a shaky voice,” I don’t wanna lose my wolf, and be some half dead, half alive thing. I don’t wanna be a traitor either though.”
“I kn-” I glared at him before he finished.
He chuckled,” I understand.”
“I don’t know what to do.”
His hands fell from my hair and held me tightly and close.
Suddenly, we were jolted up by a screaming asian nurse.
“You’re not supposed to be here! Who let you in! Are you family? No visitors until ten o’clock!”
“Sorry, sorry,” I got up and shrugged my sweater on.
“It’s fine,” Blade said,” I want her here.”
“No, no! You need rest! No visitors allowed!”
“Alright, I’m leaving,” I snapped just to shut her up.
“I’m leaving too,” said Blade, standing up.
“No, no! You’re still not well!”
“I’m fine,” he said, surprisingly politely.
“Your friend is picking you up in three hours. His name was Marshall.”
“It’s fine, I’ll drive him,” I offered.
She hesitated,” Let me check you first.”
“okay,” he said, and sat on the bed again.
She turned and scowled at him,” Did you turn off the machine!”
He pointed at me,” she did when she fell off the bed.”
“Wha- Blade! No I didn’t!” I snapped and scowled at him.
“You can’t close it! This machine detects him bodily behavior!”
“I didn’t close it!”
“Okay, okay, just check my bodily behavior.”
She plugged some wires onto his chest and opened the machine. After a couple of seconds, she turned the machine off.
“Okay, you are good to go.”
Blade hopped off the bed and smiled at the nurse,” Thank you.”
“No problem, make sure to rest!”
Blade nodded and headed towards the door. I followed behind quickly, not wanting to be alone with the nurse that wanted to kill me.
We headed outside to where my car had been parked since yesterday and unlocked it.
My phone rang as I sat on the driver seated and I took it out to see Jason’s name.
I disconnected it and saw that I had missed ten text messages and seven calls.
I shut the phone and pulled out of the parking lot.
Me and Blade sat in silence for the whole ride, listening to depressing Adele music.
Finally, I pulled by his house,” does it get lonely?” I asked,“Living alone.”
“I got used to it.”
I nodded,” we’ll find a way to fix everything.”
He nodded,” as long as it doesn’t make me a traitor like my father was.”
He exited the car and headed to his door.
I pulled out of his driveway and headed home to where mom, dad and Jason will be ready to bite my head off.
I was right.
They all stood by the window when I reached home.
The door was flung open before I even knocked on it.
Mom stood there, with crossed arms and an angry look on her face.
“Inside, now,” she said.
I would have said something sarcastic or fun but decided against it.
Jason and dad sat on the couch and to my disbelief, Amanda was there.
Great, the person I hate the most was about to witness me getting yelled at by my parents.
“Where were you?” mom began, obviously attempting to contain her anger.
“Bla-” I began but remembered I couldnt tell them,” a friend of mine fainted and went to the hospital.”
“So you stayed with whomever this was for a whole day without calling or anything! Do you realize how worried we were! We called the police, Emerald but they said you’re eighteen so it didn’t count!”
“I’m sor-”
“No you’re not! You’re behavior is unacceptable! You had some sort of sleepover at a hospital with some sick friend we don’t even know about! And I know you say sorry now but I believe with every inch of my body you’d repeat it with no hesitation!”
And I would, for Blade, I knew I would.
“Do you realize that you’re father has been searching for you ever since six o’clock yesterday! And you show up now, like you didn’t give us all the biggest panic of our life! We thought rouges had kidnapped you! We were ready to call the enemy pack, and ask them about it! That’s how desperate we were!”
I thought about what would have happened if they did. Than they’d find out blade was in the hospital and I was probably with him.
I sighed,” I’m sorry, I don’t know what else to say.”
“Go upstairs, you’re grounded, two weeks.”
I nodded and obeyed.
As I was heading to my room, I leaned against the wall and listened to them talk.
“There’s something going on with her, did you see all those bruises? Her eyes have purple bags underneath and her bones are showing!”
“I’m scared, maybe she’s doing drugs now.”
“You guys should go to a family therapist.”
“What do you think is wrong with her, it can’t all be because of Jared.”
“Her skin is as pale as a ghost!”
“I don’t know, but whatever it is, it looks like its killing her.”
I ran into my room and dialed Lisa’s number. She answered before the first ring.
“You horrible, ungrateful, worst best friend you!”
“Lis-”
“Do you know how worried, how panicked and how scared I was! Me and John spend all last night looking for you! Where the hell were you!”
“I just got crap from my mom I don’t need it from you, I was with Blade.”
“Oh, blade huh?”
“He fainted at school and I went after him. I couldn’t go in his room so I waited and went after a couple of hours. I ended up falling asleep.”
“Oh,” she muttered,” That changes things. I’m so sorry, are you okay?”
“Yeah, I don’t think he is though, I don’t know what to do.”
“You’ll figure it out. Just don’t give me a scare again, okay? And when situations like this occur, text me or something please, it only takes like two seconds.”
We talked for about twenty more minutes before we hung up.
She had to go because lunch ended at school and she had to go back to class.
I spend the rest of my tuesdays studying because I wasn’t at school.
I took a shower, did some chores to make it up to mom and slept for about two hours.
By eight o’clock, the sun was down and it was pitch black outside.
Jason and Amanda were gone and mom and Dad decided to go to sleep early.
I waited about thirty minutes just to make sure they were asleep before sneaking out.
As if it was planned, I met Blade at the cliff. It was the first time we ran together in wolf form, knowing exactly who the other person was.
For me, I thought, because he always knew that I was his mate.
We ran and ran until our worries disappeared and everything we ever stressed out about was gone.
