Chapter 7
A week rapidly rolled by, and everyone gathered within the wall for the annual Christmas festival that I was excited to celebrate. It was an exciting time, having everyone participate in the decorations around the island; hanging lights, ornaments and garland around the manor and RP&V, draping them everywhere, including decorating the 12 foot artificial trees placed in the village and manor dining hall.
All of the children were excited, for presents would be handed out by Leonus, who normally dressed as Santa Claus during the celebrations. Or he used. Skipping the day, staying home while Heather took their sons to the manor, she was growing tired of his lazy behavior around the house, drinking more and becoming more temperamental and yes, aggressive. Even during their love making, leaving scratches hidden on her body.
Within the walls, everyone engaged in snowball fights, enjoying the Winter snow, just being young. Even Zanzabarr and Abraxas, who accidentally melted the snow from their warmer, hellish temperatures, had fun, jumping into piles of ice as they chased each other around.
Lady D, enjoyed the weather, for she now she had a reason to wear her beautiful Winter cloak she had purchased, but complained that the cold wasn’t kind to her older bones. Occasionally though, she felt a snowball or two thrown at her, and as she glanced across the estate, there was her daughter bunching snow in her gloved hands, ready for another. Managing to crush some in her own hands, she laughed then threw several of her own before retreating inside for warmth, needing to find a seat.
Laughing, suddenly, I felt a snowball smashing against my face softly. As I wiped the snow out of my eyes, I looked around then spotted Anthony with a mischievous grin as he gathered snow for another round.
“You think that’s funny?!” I teased.
“Maybe a little.” he blew her a kiss, before feeling a snowball hit him across the back of the head. Knowing it wasn’t her, for she stood in front of him, he turned, watching as Thomas and the twins gathered snow in their hands.
My friends and I had as much fun as we could, chasing one another, without a care in the world or the hectic duties of the island or title as Keeper. However it didn’t last long, for parents approached, wondering if Leonus would soon show up to hand out the presents to the children.
Catching my breath, looking around, I announced that I would take up the mantle, and hand out the gifts.
“But you do know that I’m not dressing up, right?” I looked at one of the mothers, then glanced at the fathers nearby.
“Of course not.” the woman smiled, “But thank you.” she turned.
“Well guys, there goes the fun.” I complained, turning to my friends.
“Eh, there’s plenty of time to have some more.” Jonathan laughed.
“True.” Erik added, “And you have a good arm there love.” he teased.
“Likewise.” I bumped him with my elbow in a friendly manner, “But come on, if I’m doing this, all of you are doing it with me!”
“All of us?” Sarah whimpered, adjusting her Winter cap and scarf.
“Yes, Sarah…” I looked at her with a faint grin, “can’t be that bad.”
“Just wait til you see the children.” Sarah mumbled, “But do we have to do this too?”
“There’s no way in hell I’m doing this alone.” I laughed.
“Ugh, whatever.” Sarah rolled her eyes.
“Sarah, come on…” Jonathan urged, wrapping his arms around her, after they had decided, not to keep their distance from each other.
“So, does that mean we have to dress up like elves?” Erik mocked.
“Oooo, short skirts and crop tops, with jingly hats. I like the sound of that.” Jonathan purred in Sarah’s ear, causing her to squeal.
“Not a chance in Hell.” I remarked, looking at Erik, “But nice try.”
“Damn.” Anthony grinned, “Would’ve been a nice look though.” he winked at her.
“Later, maybe.” I whispered.
Anthony smiled then leered at Erik, knowing the young man was still trying to woo his woman.
“Well, since we’re not dressing up like elves, maybe we can wear the hats at least.” I reached into a bin by the door filled with hats for the kids that scampered into the manor, “Merry, or Happy Christmas.” I laughed, watching as my friends put on the goofy hats with looks on their faces of mischief and revenge planned, “Priceless.” I snapped a few photos, wanting to remember the moment clearly. I knelt down, placing a hat on Zanzabarr who shook it off, ripping it apart before tossing it away, but at least I managed to snap a photo.
“Keeper…” one of the mothers beckoned her and her friends into the lounge where another large tree stood, decorated in all of the lavish ornaments, garland and lights with a large star placed at that top that shone brightly.
“Wow…” I smiled, then walked over, sitting in one of the chairs by the tree, while my friends sat on the couches and other chairs, leaving Zanzabarr and Abraxas laying near the fireplace, “All right, let the fun begin.” I teased, sharing glances between my friends and Anthony.
Handing out the gifts that came from a large sack near the tree filled with donated presents, Sarah muttered through a smile,
“Here you go, Happy Christmas you little brats, Happy Christmas.”
“Sarah…” I commented, nudging her softly, “really?”
“I don’t like kids.” Sarah complained, “That’s why I never volunteer to baby sit, I’m never having kids.” she shook her head, “Oh, Happy Christmas.” she handed out another toy.
“Don’t feel bad.” Jonathan added, overhearing their conversation, “The only child I can tolerate is my sister Lucy, that’s it. She’s just the cutest little button, I think you know that, and speaking of, the little rug-rat should be here by now.” his blue eyes anxiously scanned the crowd.
“I don’t blame you, I don’t want kids either.” I looked at him, “Can’t have them anyway.” I then glanced at Anthony, knowing he couldn’t either. Offering a warm smile, I then blinked, watching as a cute little blonde girl walked up to me, with her hands waiting for a present. As I reached my hands into the bag, it was unfortunately empty, “Psst…” I turned to Jonathan nearby, “do you have an extra gift, my bag just came up empty.”
“Yeah.” the Australian reached into his bag, retrieving a beautifully dressed doll still wrapped in its brand new packaging, “Here you go, sweetie.” he gently handed it toward the child.
“No, I don’t want it from you, you’re not the Keeper!” she refused in a bratty-tantrum like tone, throwing the doll back at him, hitting him in the face, “I want a present from the Keeper, leave me alone, you’re not the Keeper!” she pouted.
“Hey!” I shouted, picking up the doll, “You want it from me?! Here!” I pushed it against her chest, “Take it, but don’t you ever disrespect my friends, or you will get a visit from Krampus in your bedroom, in the long, dark night.” I squinted, “Understand?!”
The little girl stood with her wide blue eyes, staring at the half-breed, then she glanced toward the fireplace where the wolf and dragon eerily stared at her. Backing away, she turned, returning to her mother, little cry baby. She went from cute to spoiled in a matter of frigging minutes.
Huffing, I looked at my friends, then over at Anthony, who did his best trying to contain a laugh but his eyes and wide smile said it all. I smiled, then looked ahead, it was my turn. A 10 year old pudgy boy approached, wanting to know why the wolf and dragon were inside.
“I don’t like animals, they’re not supposed to be in here!” he pointed one of his short, fat little fingers toward them.
“Too bad.” I leaned forward, replying sarcastically, “But guess what, they like fat boys and if you don’t like them, don’t look at them. Now here, merry f*cking Christmas little piggy!” I shoved a toy into his arms, “Bye-bye now…” I waved, watching as he stumbled back.
Zanzabarr and Abraxas hissed and growled, showing their dislike for the children that shrieked and cheered nearby, giggling and laughing.
Anthony, Jonathan and Erik held their heads low, unable to control their laughter.
Looking at her, Anthony shook his head, then leaned in, placing a few kisses to Yzavela’s cheek and neck, muttering soft words in her ear that made her laugh.
Sarah, however, sat miserably, thinking the moment wasn’t humorous because no one laughed at her reactions. Folding her arms, she then pouted.
Suddenly, however, a woman’s loud voice shrieked in anger.
Everyone turned or craned their necks toward the foyer, watching as Lady D tugged at her dress and cloak, where a bratty child sat on the hems, thinking it was a ride as it trailed behind her. Once chasing her away, Lady D grunted arguably with the parents, exclaiming in a huff, that they should have a closer eye on their child. Afterwards, Lady D scampered toward the dining hall, disappearing out of sight.
”Now I see where you get it from.” Jonathan mumbled teasingly.
“Yep.” I grinned, “And proud of it.”
“Okay, now…” Jonathan announced, “the day isn’t over yet.” he stood, walking over toward the tree, pulling out three large boxes beautifully wrapped. Laying them on the couch, he stood with Erik and Sarah, loudly cheering as they held their arms out, “Happy Christmas, Yza!” but KEEPS was mixed into the cheer.
Anthony smiled, sitting next to her, knowing her friends had planned this for her, so he would wait for his own private celebration and gift giving.
“We hope you like them.” Erik sat, handing her one of the boxes.
“I’m sure I will, thank you.” I smiled, “And I have gifts for you too.” I laid the box on the seat next to me, then stood, veering around the tree for a bag full of my own presents, handing them theirs, “Ugh…” I grunted from the weight and size of the bags and gifts inside.
“Open yours first, please.” I urged, handing each of their boxes.
Erik, Jonathan and Sarah acted like children, unwrapping their gifts.
Jonathan opened his present, holding up a steampunk belt with studs and chains, complimenting his style perfectly. He stood, immediately switching out his current belt, then nodded like a goof, offering one of his friendly smiles and knuckle bumps.
“Thank you, I love it.” he admired it once more, then sat.
“You’re welcome. There’s also something for Lucy, I thought she might like it.” I smiled.
Jonathan reached into the bag, pulling out a beautiful cloth doll with a porcelain face, hands and feet, dressed in a bright pink gown with ribbons tied in its red hair.
“Awe, she’s going to love this!” he gushed, “Thank you.”
“Perfect.” I then glanced at Sarah, “I wasn’t sure what a woman like you would want or like, so I hope you find something nice about it.” I shrugged.
Sarah smiled then carefully unwrapped her gift with care, following a set of instructions to be careful. Laying an ornate box in her lap, she opened the lid revealing hair decorations like beads, clips and ribbons that would be clipped, or braided through her curly blonde hair.
“Bloody hell, it’s brilliant!” she shrieked.
“Is that a good thing?” I chuckled.
“Yes, yes!” she looked at her, “Yes, it is. Thank you, Yza. Really.”
“You’re welcome.” I watched as she removed one of the ribbons to weave it through the braid that already hung down the side.
Nodding, Erik was last but by the look on his face, he seemed a bit disappointed by the gift which was an ornate black and red Asian plaque with gold vertical script reading his surname of SHENG-SU.
“Is there something wrong?” I wondered curiously.
“No, it’s just uh…” Erik lowered the plaque, placing it back into the box, covering it with the tissue paper, “I already have this exact piece.” his tone sounded ungrateful.
“Oh…” I softly rasped, looking away, then toward Anthony.
“Erik, really?” Jonathan nudged him bluntly.
“It’s the thought that counts Erik, not what’s given.” Anthony groaned then leaned forward, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, “It’s all right. I can be given the gift of something that I already have, but cherish it all the more because it was gifted by your hands.”
Looking at him, I felt tears, because his words were just so sincere.
Erik said nothing, snickering at the Italian, then laid the box on the seat next to him.
“Thank you for the gift, I’ll just uh…find a place for it on the wall.”
“You can toss it away, I really don’t care.” I mocked, then reaching for the gifts that were from them, I began opening them one by one.
“Just so you know, Yza…” Sarah blurted, leaning forward, “neither of us actually bought these gifts for you, Erik did but is letting us take the credit for it. Preppy rich boy.”
“Bloody hell, Sarah!” Erik snapped as he stood, “I might have been forced to purchase them, but you’re forgetting why, or would you like me to remind you of it?!”
“No…” she answered bluntly, “I remember.”
“All right, then zip it!”
“Clearly I’m missing something.” I whispered in Anthony’s ear.
“You haven’t heard the half of it.” he answered, kissing her cheek.
“Can we please just focus on Yza right now?!” Erik urged.
“Of course, because it’s always about her!” Sarah mocked, “I call a child a brat, and no one laughs at me, but when she does her little...” she huffed, “whatever it was, the two, or three of you, burst into loud hysterical laughter. I mean, what makes her so bloody special?!”
“Yeah, hi…I’m right here!” I interrupted as I abruptly stood, “Sarah, if you have something to say, please say it to my face!” I waited but she remained silent, “All right, fine then, but can someone please tell me what the hell is going on, or do all of you want to continue all of these jealous tantrums?!” I scoffed, “Jes*s Chr*st, to think I wasted my money on the lot of you!”
“Who cares, they’re all from Erik anyway!” Sarah argued then turned, storming out of the lounge toward the dining hall carrying her box of hair accessories, “But thanks for the gift anyway!” she finished over her shoulder.
“Bloody hell, Jonathan…what do you see in that mortal?!” Erik, in a heavy huff, mocked bluntly, “They’re all the same with their moods, and such.”
“Excuse me!” I cleared my throat, “I’m half mortal, or have you, yet again, forgotten that?!” I placed my hands on my hips.
“Keeps, you know I didn’t mean it like that, come on love…”
“No, I don’t know, but a pureblood making comments about being with a mortal says a lot about you!” I began steaming, which made Anthony slowly stand, “To think you wanted to be more than just friends when you can’t even mutter a sentence without making an a** of yourself!”
“Why is this my fault!?” Erik argued loudly, waving his arms around, “It’s Sarah, it’s Jonathan, it’s…”
“Don’t you dare add me, or Anthony into the equation!” I ordered.
“Yeah mate, leave me out of it!” Jonathan stood, “I’m done.” he took steps back, “Yza, happy holidays and I’ll catch you later yeah? I think I’ll go look for my sister, give her the doll.” he held up the toy, then turned and walked around Erik, deliberately bumping against his shoulder.
“Jonathan!” Erik called out after him.
“This is f*cked up, this whole moment started out perfectly then it just turned into a big pile of steaming sh*t, and on Christmas for god sake!” I complained, as the steam began turning into faint traces of my Aura, “Ugh!” I turned to the fireplace, releasing a blast of built of fiery energy that startled Abraxas and Zanzabarr, “Look…” I leered at Erik, “I’m going to stay here with Anthony and open the gifts, if you want to stay fine, but if you want to leave and fight among yourselves, do it elsewhere!” I took a seat, blinking my tears away with Anthony slowly sitting next to me.
Erik bit his lip then turned, kicking the back of one of the chairs. As he retreated to the dining hall, he turned, glancing back watching as Yzavela and Anthony shared a tender moment after she controlled her Aura. Sighing heavily, he shook his head then disappeared into the dining hall.
“Do you want to be alone?” Anthony wondered, rubbing her back affectionately.
“No.” I looked at him, “Not really.”
“Okay.” he smiled, “Then I’ll stay here.”
“But what about Thomas and Louisa?” I turned to him, “I’m sure by now they’re looking for you to celebrate among the Giovanni family.”
“You are part of that family now, my darling.” Anthony took her by the hands, “Now and always, so I’m sure they’ll understand that I’m needed more here now, then wherever they are, hmm?”
Shaking my head, he knew all the right words to say that made each, and every moment, perfect.
“Before you open those, would you open my gift?” Anthony rasped, removing a long box from his pocket.
“Of course.” I smiled, gently taking it from his hand. Opening it, I gasped softly, admiring the gorgeous white gold bracelet with Amethyst, Diamond and Onyx stones, “Oh my god, it’s beautiful.” I looked at him, “Thank you.” I leaned in, kissing him softly.
“You’re welcome, when I saw it, I knew it was you.” Anthony grinned, “After all, every woman needs something to bring out her natural beauty.” he ran his hand along her cheek, “Besides, that’s just part one.”
“Part one?” I wondered.
“Yes.” he reached for the bracelet, gently placing it around her wrist, clasping it tightly, “There you go.”
Fiddling with the bracelet, watching as the light glistened off the stones and metal, I smiled then reached into the pocket of my bustier, holding a black velvet pouch.
“I guess that means you’ll be wanting this then?” I gently swung it by the drawstrings, before laying it in his hand, “I hope you like it.”
“From you, always.” Anthony nudged her affectionately. As he opened the pouch, emptying the contents, falling into the palm of his hand was a men’s wolf’s head ring with yellow jeweled eyes, also white gold. Holding it between his fingers, turning it around, a wide smile grew on his face, “It’s magnificent.” he looked at her.
“I saw the yellow eyes and I thought it was perfect.” I giggled, then watched as he quickly placed it on his left middle finger.
“Perfect fit.” he adjusted the head, making sure it was centered, then looked at her, “Thank you, my darling.” he kissed her once more.
“You’re welcome.” I smiled, leaning my head against his, then taking a quick sigh, I shifted in my seat, opening the gifts from my friends. Opening the largest box first, I was shocked, holding up a beautiful black and dark red leather jacket. Admiring its tailored detailing I then looked at Anthony who admired the piece of clothing for himself, nodding in agreement of its fashionable design.
“Try it on.” Anthony urged her.
Removing my current jacket, replacing it with the current gift, it was a perfect fit and hugged the shape of my waist cinched from the black leather steampunk bustier. Sitting back in place, I unveiled the boots, scarf and gloves that matched the jacket as if it came as a set.
Erik stood in the doorway, holding a cup with a lid, watching as she stood, glancing at herself up and down, smiling with joy as she held onto the jacket.
“It looks better on you than I thought it would.” he announced.
Looking toward the arched entry, I cleared my throat.
“That cup better have a lid, because if it doesn’t, please don’t bump into me and ruin the new jacket.” I patted the lapels, “Or I’ll have to kill you.”
“I’m sure you would, and yes it has a lid.” Erik raised the cup, “See?”
“Mm.” I looked away, “But thank you for the jacket.” I appreciated.
“You’re welcome.” he nodded.
Putting aside the misunderstanding moments ago, I then glanced at Anthony who stood, clearing his throat, letting me know that he was going to catch up with Thomas and Louisa.
Approaching, kissing her cheek once more, he then leered at Erik as he passed, then disappeared into the foyer.
“So, what did he get you?” Erik wondered, “I don’t see anything.”
“Not that it’s any of your business, but he got me this.” I raised my left wrist, revealing the bracelet, “And something for later.” I revealed bluntly, “Which is fine, because the hate from those around us would damper the mood.” I aimed my words at him, knowing that he didn’t approve of my relationship because he still, deep down, hoped something might, or would, happen between us, “Anyway, uh…I should go find my mom and the others I have gifts for.” I turned, reaching for the bag that held other gifts, “Have you seen Nick, Caleb and Wyatt?”
“Yeah, I think they’re in the hall now actually, or at least they were.” Erik gestured over his shoulder.
“Great.” I placed my older jacket into the bag with the envelope of photos, and the antique frame. Summoning Abraxas and Zanzabarr, I walked through the lounge with Erik, making our way toward the dining hall, “Ah, there they are.” I spotted the three Guardians that stood, laughing in the corner of the room, as they hovered over the screen of one of their phones, “Catch you later.” I turned to Erik.
“Sure thing.” he smiled.
Parting ways, I approached the Guardians.
“Hey guys, Merry and Happy Christmas.” I greeted.
“Merry Christmas.” the three men replied.
“Whoa, love the jacket.” Caleb admired, “Erik knows his fashions.”
“Yes he does.” I adjusted the jacket, “Listen, I have gifts for you.”
“Us? Really?” Nick’s brown eyes widened, “You shouldn’t have.”
“Why not?” I wondered, laying the bag near my feet, “You are my friends, aren’t you?” I joked, looking up at him, handing him his gift that was in a rather large box that weighed little, “I’ve heard that you ran out.”
“You didn’t?!” he smiled, laying the box on the nearby table. As he sped through the ribbons and ripped apart the paper he practically bounced on his toes with glee, “Oh my god, I can’t believe this, how did you get this?!” he studied the box of hair dyes in various colors that had just gone out of business, “I thought they closed down?!” he turned to her.
“I’m the Keeper, I have my connections.” I smiled, “I talked to Caleb and he told me that one can alone will last you years so you have, like what, twelve cans there so I think you’ll be fine.”
“Thank you!” he turned, hugging her quickly.
“You’re welcome, and…you’re squeezing too hard.” I chuckled.
“Sorry.” he smiled happily, then examined the colors.
Shaking my head, I then glanced at Wyatt and Caleb.
“These are for you.” I knelt for the bag, handing them their gifts.
Wyatt unwrapped a stack of arcane books of spells and practices for level 5 Demons. Laying them on the table, he flipped through the pages briefly then smiled, thanking her for the gift for he knew, that she knew, he loved to explore more of his magical capabilities.
“How did you get these?” he wondered.
“Like I said, I have my ways and sources.” I grinned with a shrug, “I just don’t want you getting out of hand with those, all right?”
“Of course.” he nodded, then sat, beginning to skim through them.
“And you?” I looked at Caleb.
The Wraith flashed one of his charming smiles, opening his gift. His brown eyes softened as he held a set of three men’s cabbie flap hats in black, brown and dark gray that would match his daily attire and leather uniform.
“Bloody hell, thank you.” Caleb gushed, “I do have a thing for hats.”
“I know.” I winked, “I’m glad you like them.”
“We feel bad now.” Nick pondered softly.
“Don’t worry about it, your friendship is enough.” I reassured.
Afterwards, the bell rang from the kitchen announcing that dinner would now be served. As trolley’s rolled out, piled with loads of platters of foods themed for the holiday season, they were laid on the tables with drinks.
Sitting with my mom, I quickly handed over her two gifts that were a bottle of her favorite perfume and a beautiful dark purple velvet dress that she was fancying for the longest time but just didn’t make the decision to purchase it. Receiving her gift in return, a bottle of my favorite perfume and an Amethyst crystal wrapped by her own hand on a silver chain, I immediately sprayed squirts of perfume then placed the chain around my neck.
“Let’s eat.” I muttered, hiding the empty bag at my feet.
“Yes, let’s.” Lady D smiled.
“Mm, someone smells sweet.” Anthony walked over, taking a seat.
“Ah, you.” I teased.
“Si, me.” he winked, then glancing at Thomas and Lady D, he gave a brief nod, alerting them that that very night, he would see through with the second part of his gift giving.
Katrina’s daughters, Margaret and Belle sat outside their aunt’s home, watching as a group of children played about the large yard. Lucy, Jonathan’s little sister of 4 years old, ventured outside the iron gate, fetching a ball that the other children had kicked over. Dressed in a white coat, making her look like a fluffy white bunny with bright pink ribbons in her bright red hair and red boots, she squeezed through the bars of the fence, only to be brought back by Caleb, who carried her back to the fenced off home.
Margaret, hearing the Wraith’s charming laugh, raised her gaze, there he was carrying the small child before putting her on the ground. As the young woman ran forward, she knelt in front of Lucy, placing her hands on the child’s shoulders,
“What did I tell you about not venturing outside the gate? There are dangers out there, you know that.” Margaret gently touched her face.
“Sorry.” Lucy’s heart melting voice squeaked in her Australian accent.
“It’s all right, go play.” Margaret urged the child back to the others, “Sorry about that.” she turned to Caleb, “She’s just to innocent, you know? She doesn’t realized what it’s like dealing with those monsters.”
“We were all innocent like that once.” Caleb smiled, “But no worries, I was passing by anyway.” he watched as Lucy laughed and giggled, “She really is a cute little button as Jonathan says, and believe it or not, she’s the only little bird around here I can tolerate.” he grinned.
Margaret smiled, combing her hair behind hers. Coming of age, she had set her eyes on Caleb, admiring his contagious smile being the tall, dark and handsome bad-boy. With his slender build at 6 foot, and his natural black hair cut short in the back with fuller bangs, he was adorable. His dark brown eyes complimented his fair, but pale skin tone and his style of dress was always in good taste. He always carried his guns strapped in their holsters around his slender thighs.
“Margaret?” Caleb muttered the young woman’s name.
“Hmm?” she blinked quickly.
“Are you all right?” he smiled.
“Oh yes, I’m sorry. I was just…thinking.” Margaret giggled shyly, “I have been meaning to ask you, what’s it like up there on the wall?”
“Ah, it’s bloody brilliant. I can see for miles in all directions. Would you like to take a look sometime?” Caleb wondered innocently.
“Oh, no…no-no, I’m afraid of heights. Besides, I can’t leave them.” she turned, gesturing at the children that screamed a little too loudly.
“I didn’t mean right now, but if you ever change your mind, just let me know.” he grinned.
“I-I would like that very much.” Margaret blushed, watching as his full bangs blew in the wind.
“And the birds too, I think you’d like.” Caleb looked at her.
“Wh-why?”
“I don’t know, I just thought maybe you would.” he shrugged, “And it’s fun watching them during feeding time too, they such a riot.” he chuckled.
“Feeding time? You feed the Ravens?”
“W-well, of course we do. Cracked pieces of corn and raw meat here and there, but you’ve gotta be careful though, those buggers will tear your fingers off. I got pecked a few times and it wasn’t pretty. Thank god I heal, or I would have lost somethin’ vital.” he joked, then took a moment to realize that that sounded better in his head than it did aloud. Looking at her, he noticed her innocent, wide-eyed expression.
“Is it feeding time up there now?”
“Nah, but next time, if you want I’ll show you.”
“Now that I would like, thank you. My mum, sister and I love to feed them too.” Margaret smiled then glanced back at the children yet again, taking notice that Belle had been distracted, tending to one of the boys that sprained a finger. Glancing around the yard, quickly she noticed that Lucy wandered yet again, too close to the fence, “Ugh, Lucy what did I tell you about getting too close to the fence, Belle keep an eye on her!” she clapped, getting her sister’s attention.
“Listen, I’m taking you away from you brood here so I’ll let you go.” Caleb backed away.
“No, it’s all right, Belle…Belle can handle them for a bit, please.” she reached out, gently touching his arm, “Don’t go.”
Knowing she was just a child, too young for his interests, and that she was flirting with him the best way that she could, Caleb handled her flirtations like a gentleman.
“Listen love, you’re a sweet bird and all, don’t get me wrong you are lovely but you’re too young and I’m too old for you. Besides, even if I went there I don’t think your mum would approve of you dating a Wraith that’s been out in the world, seeing and doing, a lot of things.” he nodded, gently pulling her hand off his sleeves, “Sorry, love.” he then heard the village bell ring loudly and continuously, “Hold on.” he stepped away, speaking with Justin who appeared behind him just a few inches away, “Are you sure?” he frowned, looking at his fellow Guardian, “Already? But it’s not even dusk yet, they’re early!”
Margaret couldn’t help but listen to the Wraiths speaking about the Boar-wolves that had surprisingly ventured from Ravenswood much earlier than anticipated. As she glanced at the sky, the clouds rolled in, bringing in a dark blanket that blocked out the sun for the rest of the afternoon.
“All right.” Caleb nodded, then turned to Margaret apologizing to her, “I’m sorry but I have to go.” he nodded, then turned, walking off with Justin in slow strides.
Margaret bit her lip then turned, watching as Belle engaged in a brief snowball fight. Smiling affectionately, she then watched as Lucy ran about, screaming and laughing. Sighing, she closed her eyes, making her way back to the house, retreating inside momentarily before the Guardians had made the announcement to put the protective crystals in place.
Just as Lucy passed by the fence, her big blue eyes spotted a baby white fox laying near one of the iron posts, sniffing around with its sleek fur blowing from a gust of wind that swept across the island. As she stepped closer, the fox didn’t seem frightened of her presence making it easier for her to approach. Loving animals, having a pet rabbit at home, seeing the fox excited her. Turning to the other kids pointing at the animal with a big smile, none of them paid attention so she turned, pouting.
“Doggy.” she whispered, “You’re so pretty.” she bounced in place, and as she turned once more, waving for attention, she noticed that both Margaret and Belle had become distracted when the other boys and girls were gathered around the steps near the front door. Unsure of what to do, placing her thumb to her mouth as if almost ready to suckle on it, she didn’t remember Margaret’s warning, so taking steps closer to the fox that backed away, she watched as it ran out into the fog and blizzard winds, “Doggy no…” she giggled, then squeezing through the bars of the fence, she tore one of her sleeves of her coat. Wandering after the fox, falling into the snow because of its depth, she covered her eyes searching for the animal and coming across one of the large trees far from the property, she found the fox lying dead in the snow but death wasn’t a concept for her, “Doggy, are-are you sleeping? Wake up, doggy…” she knelt, gently shaking the fox, “oh.” she whimpered then as she raised her tear-filled blue eyes, looking around, she began hearing howling and squealing that frightened her. Crying, she muttered softly, “Johnny…Johnny, I’m scared.” then as she curled herself against the base of the tree, she wrapped her arms around her knees bent to her chin, feeling the icy winds stinging her round, freckled cheeks. She didn’t know how to find her way back to the homes.
Sniffing around the snow behind the tree with its deformed snout, a creature loomed tall above a mortal child, breathing heavily, causing its hot breath to fog in the cold air. Stomping around the tree, its massive head leaned in close, sniffing the child that whimpered from its persistent nudging, leaving strands of drool dripping from its large distorted mouth. Taking one of his massive hands, it swept the screaming child from the ground before running off back into the seclusion of Ravenswood.
Although her screams had been masked by the other children playing, and that of the howling winds, all of the Wraiths, no matter where they were on the island, or what task they performed, stopped as they glanced around, hearing the abnormal scream.
Caleb, returning from a scuffle in RP&V, was just passing the homes when he heard the screams. Glancing around, he became attentive and alert, placing his hands on the hilts of his guns. As he turned, he listened as the bells in the village, and that atop the wall, rang loudly, alerting the island that dusk had now approached and that everything was to be locked down for the evening. Passing other Guardians that made sure those in their homes were putting their crystals in place, he stopped by the house where Margaret and Belle gathered in the yard with their Aunt and Uncle, watching as the eldest sister searched in a frantic state.
“Lucy! Lucy!” the young woman shouted.
“Margaret, what’s wrong?” he sped toward the fence.
“I don’t know, I can’t find Lucy!” Margaret fretted, then turned, and continued calling for the young child, “Lucy, sweetheart come on…” her eyes continued scanning the yard among the other kids, “this isn’t funny, hide and seek is over now! It’s time to go home!” but still, no reply or signs, “Oh my god, Caleb…” she turned, leaning into him.
“This is Caleb, we have a problem.” he spoke into his radio.
“Go ahead, Caleb.” Wyatt’s voice spoke.
“I think one of the children have gone missing.”
“What do you mean?” Justin appeared next to him.
“Margaret, I’ll be right back okay?” Caleb looked down at her, “Tell Justin what happened…” he nodded, then backed away, needing just a moment to speak over the radio.
Margaret sniffled, telling the other Wraith what happened.
“It’s all right, we’ll find her.” Justin reassured.
“Have the bell ring in the village and make sure everyone gets inside.” Wyatt’s voice spoke firmly over the radio.
“Got it.” Caleb answered, then sped down the road with many other Wraiths that went around, knocking on the doors, instructing all of the homeowners to put the barriers in place for some had not yet done so, “All right, we got this.” he placed his hands on his hips, standing on the road, watching as all of the dome-like barriers immediately covered the properties.
“Caleb!” Justin’s voice broke over the radio.
“Yeah?” he answered.
“We’ve got a problem, get back over here!” Justin worried.
Frowning, Caleb placed the radio back on his belt then sped down the path, returning to the home where Margaret paced, crying and pointing at the ground. Appearing alongside them, before the barrier was put in place around the home, he leaned in, listening as Justin told him that there were footprints found leading toward the fence.
“What?!” Caleb’s brown eyes widened, then watched as Margaret ran toward the boundary of the fence, pleading out into the distance that lay beyond the property, “Margaret!” he and Justin sped toward her.
“Oh my god…” the young woman pulled off a piece of fabric swaying in the winds, “this is Lucy’s.” she muttered, “Lucy…Lucy!” she cried out over the roaring winds, “Lucy, can you hear me?!” she squinted, trying to see through the white blur and instead of Lucy’s voice answering, only vicious, deep growls replied. Continuing to stare out, she and the two Wraiths that stood close, watched as what looked like, a thick outline revealed itself in the distance, growing larger as it approached, thumping its heavy feet against the snow.
“Get back, get back!” Caleb pulled Margaret away from the fence but both fell backwards, stumbling into Justin who also fell.
The Aunt shrieked, retreating into the home with the children.
Burning itself against the iron fence and the barrier, the Boar-wolf had continued thumping against the barricade, causing violent, bright shimmers against the shield that the crystals had created and all in a matter of perfect timing too. It squealed, before retreating backwards, disappearing into the thick blizzard.
For the first time, Caleb and Justin had seen the creatures up close.
“Come on…” Caleb sped to his feet, helping Margaret and Justin from the ground, “get inside, be with your family.” he urged gently, then flinched hearing distant gunshots echoing before fading quickly.
“What are we going to do?” Justin worried, “If they took her, what are we going to do?”
“The only thing we can do.” Caleb rasped, looking at him.
“I’m coming with you.” Margaret pleaded, fumbling with the fabric in her hands, “This is my fault, I should be there when you tell her.”
“Lucy should be here.” Jonathan searched the hall, “Margaret should have shown up by now, they missed the presents and dinner already.”
“Don’t worry, Jonathan.” Erik added, “She’s in good hands. They’re probably just enjoying themselves.” he quickly placed his hand on his left shoulder.
“I hope so, I’m not getting a good feeling. Something’s wrong.”
“You worry too much.” Sarah commented, “Besides, your parents uh, should have been watching her so why are Margaret and Belle with her in the first place?”
Jonathan glared at her, saying nothing as he shook his head. Stepping away, not wanting to explain to her that his parents had desperately wanted a little time alone together as husband and wife, he ventured into the foyer, pacing anxiously trying to call Margaret but she wasn’t answering her phone.
Erik looked at Sarah, saying nothing as well, then turned away when Nathan approached. Rolling his eyes, he left the brother and sister to talk.
“So, what’s going on? Trouble between you already?” Nathan leered down at Sarah, mocking her relationship with Jonathan.
“Shut up, Nathan.” Sarah barked, leering at him return, “It’s not like that, he’s just…”
“Over there, instead of over here, with you. At Christmas. Yeah, I’d say things are going just fine.” he sipped from his drink, then glanced across the hall, watching as Yzavela stood with her mother and the Giovanni family, “She hasn’t changed, just blossomed even more.”
“For god sake, Nathan…” Sarah huffed, “get over yourself, you are never going to have a chance with her, never! She doesn’t give you the time of day, much less even thinks about you.” she leered toward her, “I don’t know what everyone sees in her, she’s nothing special but…” she removed a box from her pocket, slapping it against his chest, “happy Christmas.” she stormed off.
“Sarah…” Nathan called out after but she didn’t reply, “sh*t.” and as he held the box, opening it, he was surprised to see a men’s watch, one that he was eyeing for a few weeks, “Hmm, thanks sis.” and as he removed it from the box, he immediately placed it on his wrist then glanced around the room, looking for Sarah to genuinely thank her, but she wasn’t present.
Caleb, Justin and Margaret appeared outside the manor, standing by the front doors.
“Are you ready, love?” Justin looked at her.
“No.” Margaret whimpered, “I mean, how am I supposed to walk up to Jonathan and tell him that his sister has been kidnapped by the Boar-wolves when I was supposed to be watching her?”
“You don’t have to be here, we’re the Guardians so it’s up to us to report news like this.” Caleb answered, “Justin will take you home.”
“No, I want to be here.” Margaret affirmed, “But I can’t be alone.”
“And you won’t be.” Justin grinned.
Nodding, Margaret smiled then watched as Caleb pulled the doors open, allowing her to pass first like the perfect gentleman. Walking through the foyer, they didn’t make it into the dining hall for they all heard Jonathan’s voice summon them near the doors leading into the atrium.
“Where the hell have you been?!” Jonathan rushed toward Margaret.
“Um…” the young woman stuttered.
“Jonathan?” I approached.
Turning toward the dining hall, Jonathan watched as Yzavela slowly approached with a saddened expression in her dark eyes, with Lady D and the Giovanni brothers gathered behind her.
“What’s going on?” Jonathan demanded, “Margaret, where’s Lucy?”
“Jonathan, mate…” Caleb stepped forward, standing in front of her.
“Jonathan…” I approached once more, stepping closer, looking into his blue eyes, then glanced at Caleb before focusing on Justin and Margaret.
“What’s going on?! Yza…” Jonathan pleaded, looking at her, “please don’t make me read your mind, don’t make me break that trust.”
“It’s Lucy…” Margaret whimpered, pushing between Yzavela and Caleb. As she reached out her hands, placing them on Jonathan’s arm, she finished, “Jonathan, Lucy’s been taken.”
“Wh-what?!” Jonathan’s voice quivered, “Taken by wh-who?!”
“She was taken by the Boar-wolves.” I finished softly.
Jonathan’s blue eyes widened in shock, knowing the history of what happened when residents went missing, they were never found. As he stumbled backwards, Justin sped forward, helping him lean against the wall for support.
“Don’t blame Margaret, it was my fault. I stopped by after bringing Lucy back to the home when she ran off the first time after the ball that was tossed out of the yard and then…” Caleb revealed the events in order, “I distracted her from her responsibilities, the blame is mine.”
“Noble, but no.” I announced, “Yes, Margaret was careless but from what I’ve heard, she’s always been attentive in the past, Jonathan you can’t blame her or Caleb for this. You know that the Boar-wolves have been more aggressive lately, we’ve all heard it.”
“Hey, is it true?!” Erik’s voice interrupted as he appeared nearby.
Turning to him, I reluctantly nodded, as did Caleb and Justin.
“Bloody hell…” Erik cursed, “Jonathan, I’m sorry.” he watched as his friend pushed Justin away, “Whoa mate, come on, calm down!”
“Calm down?! I can’t calm down!” Jonathan exclaimed loudly, “That is my baby sister out there somewhere, so you wouldn’t understand the meaning of family or having siblings so bugger off!” he shouted, “I have to tell my mum and dad that my sister is missing, how do you think that makes me feel, Erik?! Huh?! The world isn’t all about you and your drama!” he began shaking in fear.
“You’re right, Jonathan.” Erik arrogantly barked, “I don’t have the whole family, other than my father, and you’re the closest thing to a brother I’ve got, so I suggest you quit taking your anger out on those around you that are just trying to help.” he frowned, then turned and walked away, storming into the lounge, gazing out one of the large windows.
“Erik!’ I called out after him. Turning to Jonathan, I complained, “Really, Jonathan? That’s a new low, even for you.” I shook my head then turned to Anthony, gently squeezing his arm before making my way toward Erik, “Hey…” I placed a friendly hand on Erik’s back.
“Before you ask, I’m fine.” Erik barked, looking down at her.
“You and I both know that’s not true.” I folded my arms.
“Can’t lie to you.”
“No, you can’t. I mean, you can try, but no. Listen, don’t let what he said bother you, you’re brothers. Besides, family comes in many ways and in different forms, whether it’s husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, brother and sister, or between friends. Aside from my mom of course, you, Jonathan, Nick, Caleb, Thomas and yes Anthony, are my family. Even Sarah, despite her kookiness, so you know he didn’t mean it.”
“I know that, but it hurt nonetheless. I was bullied when I was a kid, being called an orphan freak but hearing him talk to me like that just brought it all back for a moment.” he complained softly.
“Erik, I know…I get it, I’ve been there. Half-breed here, remember?” I whispered, “Unfortunately, it doesn’t get any easier.”
“Why does everything have to be about you?!” Erik questioned, as he turned to her, stepping away.
“What?! Where the hell did that come from?!” I frowned, not liking the tone in his voice.
“You know what, Sarah’s bloody right.”
“About what?! What did I say?!”
“It’s all about you!”
“That’s enough!” Anthony’s voice approached, growling deeply. As he stood behind her, wrapping an arm around her waist, he held her close, “Don’t say something you will come to regret that cannot be forgiven.”
“Bloody hell, always around.” Erik mocked, “You know what, you’re perfect for each other, and you…” he eyed Anthony up and down, “you can have her.” he gestured at Yzavela with a moment of disgust.
I gasped, for I never thought I would ever hear such words rush from his lips, and in the tone they were spoken as if he hated me. Feeling a sting of tears stabbing my eyes, I nodded then quickly pulled away from Anthony’s gentle embrace, retreating to the atrium, needing just a moment to myself.
“Nicely done.” Anthony groaned.
“Oh, will you just shut it?!” Erik arrogantly barked.
“Watch it, kid…or you will lose everyone who cares about you, and from what I can see…” Anthony looked around, “that’s happening already and all by your doing and arrogance. And the next time, you speak to her like that, will the last time you speak to her like that.”
“And what’re you going to do, big man?” Erik confronted the Italian.
Eyeing the young man before him, Anthony felt sorry for him, for he was pathetic.
“You are not worth the words.” Anthony muttered. Turning away, he passed by Thomas with a heated temperament before retreating into the atrium after Yzavela, “Little Yza…” he approached, sitting next to her as she sat on the ground.
“I’m sorry, I just need a moment.” I wiped tears away.
“Take all the time you need, my darling.” he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, holding her close, “All the time you need.” he kissed her head, then listened as she sniffled softly.
Erik huffed, clenching his fists, then turned, punching the back of one of the couches, leaving a deep imprint in the shiny leather.
“Erik?” Jonathan’s voice muttered behind him.
“What now, Jonathan?” Erik turned to him, “Come back for more?! Well, get in line cause I’m sure it’s not over yet.” he glanced at those standing around, “Bloody hell, look at that, here comes my father.”
“Look, I didn’t come over here to argue or fight, I just wanted to say that I was sorry.” Jonathan looked around, “You know how close we are, Lucy and I, so this is just…f*cking crazy, you know?” he glanced at his feet, “But that still doesn’t give me the right to say what I had said, truly mate, I’m sorry. You’re my brother, blood or not.”
Erik studied his friend, knowing that he would never say something to hurt someone. Pushing aside his own drama, he approached and quickly gave him a brotherly hug before pulling away.
“You’re forgiven, but next time, I might punch you.” Erik grinned.
“Well deserved then, I’m sure.” Jonathan nodded, then searched for Yza, “Where, uh…where did Yza go?”
“Yeah, I might have f*cked up things between us. Again.” Erik let out a deep, regretful sigh, “Just can’t seem to keep this friendship in check, you know? I expect more than what she’s capable, or willing, to give and I’m ruining things.”
“That’s the first, admitting to your own guilt.” Jonathan nodded, and hearing those words come from his own lips, he was going to take his own advice. He turned, stepping toward Margaret, hugging her quickly, “I’m sorry for snapping at you like that, I didn’t mean it. I just…” he groaned, scrunching his mouth into a pout, “just tell me what happened, moment from moment, please?”
Margaret nodded, then walking into the hall with Jonathan, they sat at the nearest table, while Thomas stood speaking with Lady D, and the two Wraith Guardians.
“I can’t believe this.” Caleb fretted.
“I can’t believe it either, but let me tell ya…” Justin added, “those f*ckers are bold, it wasn’t even fully dusk yet.” he looked at Caleb, “And they’re ugly mother f*ckers too.”
“How so?” Lady D questioned curiously.
Caleb removed a pad from his pocket, tearing out a page that had a sketch of the creature with a close likeness. Handing it to the woman, he watched as not only her brown eyes widened, but Thomas’ as well.
“That’s just a drawing, and not a very good one. It’s uglier up close.” he revealed, gesturing at the page.
“What’s uglier up close?” I asked, making my presence known after I emerged from the atrium with Anthony by my side.
Lady D handed her daughter the page, watching as her eyes widened.
“That was our same reaction.” Thomas observed their glances.
“Oh my god…” I lowered the page, then handed it to Caleb.
“Yeah.” the Wraith crumbled it away, then tossed it into the trash.
“Where’s Jonathan?” I wondered.
“He and Margaret went into the dining hall.” Justin revealed.
“Mm, okay.” I nodded, then ventured toward the entrance, watching as Jonathan and Margaret spoke softly. Glancing around, I found my Zanzabarr and Abraxas laying in the corner of the room, watching all. I smiled, then clicked, summoning them to heel; Abraxas shifted into another wolf, making the command easier to adhere to, “All right…” I sighed. Approaching the table, sitting next to Jonathan, I offered my friendship and any resource to help find his sister, “We’ll find her.” I comforted, “I promise.”
“Thank you, I really appreciate it.” Jonathan smiled, “But how am I going to break this news to my parents? They’re home now, probably celebrating their time alone.” he fretted, “They’re going to be just so devastated, especially mum.”
“Want company?” Erik approached.
Raising his gaze, Jonathan smiled at his friend.
“The more support, the better.” he nodded, accepting the friendship, “Um, Yza…” he turned to her, watching as she petted two wolves, “I was wondering if maybe you’d come with me? I think maybe having you there, you know the Keeper and all that, will provide much more reassurance than just my words.” he shrugged, “Besides, they’ve been wanting to meet you anyway on a more personal basis, so how much more personal can this be, right?”
“I would be more than happy to.” I smiled.
“Jonathan, sweetie…” Lady D spoke.
“Yeah, Ma’am?” he turned to her.
“If there’s anything that I can for you, and your parents, please don’t hesitate to let me know, all right?” Lady D placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, “A mother, or brother, should never lose their child.”
“Thank you, Lady D.” Jonathan appreciated, “I would love that.” he referred to the woman’s magical practices, “All right, I think I should get home before it’s too late.” he stood, “Will you be all right?” his blue eyes glanced down at Margaret.
“Yes.” she nodded.
“I’ll make sure she gets home.” Caleb added, standing behind her.
“All right then…” I stood, looking around, watching as the grand celebrations were coming to an end rather quickly, “Anthony, would you do me a favor?” I approached him.
“Anything.”
“Would you take my mom back to the dwelling and make sure that she’s all right?” I pleaded.
“Of course.” Anthony grinned.
“I’ll be fine.” Lady D protested.
“I know but still…” I turned to her, hugging her quickly, “for me?”
“Of course.” Lady D smiled, then glanced at the Italian, “Shall we?”
Anthony kissed Yzavela once more, then allowed Lady D to gently loop her arm through his. Walking through the dining hall, they had disappeared into the foyer before stepping outside.
“Zanzabarr, Abraxas…” I knelt in front of the wolves, “I want you to go with them.”
“But what about you, Mother?” Abraxas wondered telepathically, as his wolf form sniffed and licked her face.
“I’ll be fine.” I kissed his snout, “Go…” I urged, clapping loudly.
“As you wish Mother, but I will not stay idle.” the Zyphyn argued.
“Wouldn’t expect anything less.” I grinned. I stood, watching as the two wolves scampered out of the hall, then turned to Jonathan, “So, how are we going to do this?”
“Portal okay?” Jonathan asked.
“Fine with me.” Erik added.
“Me too.” I nodded, then turned to the Wraiths, “Would you please get back to your posts, and the moment that you find out anything, I want to be the first to know about it.”
“Sure thing.” Justin nodded.
“Absolutely.” Caleb smiled, tipping the rim of his new cabbie hat.
Offering a brief nod, I watched as the Wraiths teleported just as a portal opened. Turning around, I could see a living room waiting on the other side. Stepping through with Jonathan and Erik, shuffling a rug out of place, the portal immediately closed. Looking around, the Saxon home was quaint and decorated with a more neutral taste of a country-like vibe with a deer skull hanging above the fireplace.
“Mum! Dad!” Jonathan called out. Looking around, he could see the signs of their dinner date, with glasses of wine and plates on the table in the kitchen. Glancing down the hall, hearing a door open, he stood, watching as his parents emerged, tying their robes closed.
“Jonathan, my boy…” his father, Jonathan Sr. greeted in a soft, but raspy Australian accent, “what brings you, and your…” his blue eyes veered around his son, “friends here at this hour?”
“Jonathan?” his mother, Susan wondered.
“Mum, Dad…I’m sorry I came back, I know you wanted the evening to yourselves but…” Jonathan stepped forward, “this isn’t social. It’s about Lucy.” he barely spoke the words.
“Lucy?!” Susan worried, “ What about her, what’s happened?!”
Jonathan sighed, gently seating his parents at the kitchen table. As he paced, he broke the news in a gentle manner, then afterwards, he had stood still, listening to his mother cry hysterically, sobbing as she was held in her husband’s arms.
“Oh my god, my baby girl…not my baby girl!” she cried then lept out of the chair, rushing toward Yzavela who stood nearby, leaning against the counter, “Please…” she fell to her knees, reaching for her hands, pleading frantically, “please dear girl, you’re the Keeper, please bring my baby home! Bring her home to us, please…” she cried; the tears streamed down her wet face.
Feeling her pain, knowing my mom would feel and react in the same hysterical manner, I held back my tears, knowing that a child is a still a child, no matter the age, and that that’s a bond that could never be severed. Kneeling in front of her, helping her stand, I gently took her hands.
“I can’t make that promise, I’m sorry.” I spoke truthfully, “But I do give you my word that I will try, that’s all I can promise.” and as my dark eyes glanced toward Jonathan Sr and Jonathan, I knew then that I had made my intentions clear, “She’s a child Ma’am, and if these creatures have any morals, they won’t harm her, she’s too young so there is hope.” I squeezed her hands, then pulled the woman in for a comforting hug. As I glanced around, nearby there were pictures of the family scattered about the home on tables or the fireplace mantle.
“Sweetheart…” Jonathan Sr summoned her back to her seat.
Watching as she pulled away, I studied Jonathan Sr seeing shadows under his blue eyes then watched as he concealed a rough cough. I had found out that he had been diagnosed with Cancer so the effects were beginning to take its toll. Once Susan sat by his side, he held her close, closing his eyes, crying with her.
Wiping my tears away, I turned, leaning against the counter, taking a slow, quivering breath. How was I going to do this, how was I going to keep my promise when no one knows where the Boar-wolves even dwell?
“Hey…” Erik approached her, gently tapping her arm.
“Hey.” I sniffled, wiping my tears away, then turned looking at him.
“Listen, I wanted to apologize.”
“Don’t, please don’t.” I held up my hands, interrupting him, “Really.”
“No, I want to.”
“But I don’t want to hear it.” I argued telepathically, not wanting the Saxon family to overhear our spat.
“But you have to, you have to know that I’ve been under pressure.”
“And what pressure would that be, huh?” I mocked,“Because right now, I think if anyone’s under pressure here Erik, it’s Jonathan and yes, me. This is just something else that I have to deal with, so I am not going to say this again, forget about it because saying sorry all the time doesn’t always fix things.” I frowned, then gently pushed him aside, walking across the kitchen approaching the fireplace.
“What was that about?” Jonathan wondered, approaching her.
“Nothing important.” I turned to him, folding my arms, “You know, I don’t know how Marxus could tell me with a straight face that the Boar-wolves weren’t harmful or aggressive. Look what they’ve done!”
“Honestly, I don’t think Marxus realized how dangerous they really were.” Jonathan complained softly, “None of us did and now I think they’re evolving, learning more from us and our routines, but coming out before dusk? That’s dangerous for sure because what if soon, or not at all, the sun doesn’t effect them anymore? Then what?!”
“I don’t know.” I shrugged, “And that’s what worries me.” then as I glanced at the windows near the door, I could hear an ominous force attempting to penetrate the invisible barrier outside around the home, “What’s that?” I shuffled across the room around the furniture, and as I stood, peeking through the glass, both Jonathan and I watched as the beasts pounded against the dome, making an unsettling indescribable sound. Looking at Jonathan, then over at Erik who approached, the three of us were left speechless.
“Yza, meet the Boar-wolves.” Jonathan gestured at the window, as he referred to the creature outside.
I frowned, managing to catch the size of the beast, it was larger than I had realized but I couldn’t make out their features well enough due to the blizzard winds outside.
Suddenly, hearing Jonathan Sr cough violently, the man buckled over while he still sat at the kitchen table with Susan.
“He doesn’t look good, is he all right?” I worried.
“He has Cancer.” Jonathan revealed, “We’re keeping it quiet, because he doesn’t want to bother anyone, but I keep telling him that there could be methods and treatments to help ease the hard discomfort but he won’t listen, not to me or mum.”
“Oh my god…” that was all I could say.
“Found out last year.” Erik added.
“I guess all those years in the shop without a mask caught up to him.” Jonathan finished.
“And the Doctors, what did they say?”
“It’s stage three.” Jonathan glanced at his parents, “He’s taking some medications but Doctor Matthews says they’re not working the way he hoped, and being bitten by a Wraith won’t help either.”
“That’s not funny.” Erik groaned.
“Wasn’t trying to be, I was just saying what Matthews said.”
I sighed, worrying for Jonathan on a grander scale because not only did he have to worry about Lucy, but how he had to be the man of the house, taking care of his father and mother. Sarah was stupid if she didn’t realize just how special he truly was, I just hoped he saw it himself. Hearing a sudden beep coming from my pocket, I removed my phone.
“Excuse me.” I turned, stepping away, “Hey, are you okay?” I looked at my mom’s face on the screen.
“Yes, I was just making sure you’re all right.” Lady D answered.
“I’m…” I paused, “I don’t know.” I sighed heavily, “I’m trying.”
“I know you are, sweetheart. Anyway, I’ll let you go.”
“I’ll try to stop by later.” I offered.
“It’s been a long day.” Lady D yawned, “But if I don’t answer, know it’s not because I didn’t want to talk.”
“I know, so get some sleep. I’ll talk to you tomorrow. Love you…”
“Love you too.” Lady D smiled, then ended the call.
Staring at the phone and the picture of Anthony and I saved as my background image, I then sent a message throughout the Isle’s private broadcast system that was linked to everyone’s radios and phones; my instructions for everyone to tune in at 9:00am sharp, would provide further details.
“Hopefully.” I mumbled, biting my lip, then turned to Erik and Jonathan, “Listen, I think I should I go. It’s getting late and I need time to think about what I’m going to do.”
“Give me a few, then I’ll take you back.” Jonathan offered.
“No, you stay here. Be with your mother and father.” I affectionately placed my hands on his shoulders, “They need you more than ever.” I leaned in, placing a friendly kiss on his cheek then pulled away, “I will see you tomorrow, okay?”
“Yeah, okay.” Jonathan grumbled, then leaned in, hugging her. Once he pulled away, he turned, returning to the kitchen table, where his parents flipped through a photo album of baby pictures of him and Lucy.
“Come on, I’ll take you back.” Erik offered Yzavela a hand.
“Thank you.” I appreciated the gesture. Taking his hands, closing my eyes, we teleported in a swirling flame, appearing within the estate by the manor’s front doors, “Thank you.” I nodded at Erik.
“You’re welcome.” Erik returned the nod, then watched as she swiftly made her way across the courtyard, pushing through the gate.
Making my way down the path to the dwellings, I paused, seeing the grand building ahead of me. Glancing to my left toward garage and Lycynian dwelling, I ventured that way instead, bravely heading upstairs to Anthony’s room. Knocking softly, so I didn’t disturb the others on the floor, I smiled once he opened the door, dressed in only his pajama pants that dangerously hugged his hips, revealing his bare muscular chest, greeting me with an affectionate kiss and strong embrace. Once I stepped inside, I looked around his room once more, having been here several times, and the decor still made me smile with its Italian furnishings set in the same placement as I think every room.
“How did it go?” Anthony asked softly, sitting with her on the bed.
“As expected, I suppose.” I muttered in complaint then leaned closer into his arms, “I have a meeting in the morning to tell everyone so…”
“I got the message.” he looked at his phone on the table where the ring box openly sat next to the lamp. Glancing down at her, hoping she didn’t notice it, he grinned affectionately, seeing that she had fallen asleep with her head laying against his chest, “Sleep, little Yza.” he whispered, fidgeting slowly, then turned out the lights that slowly dimmed, with only the fireplace for light and warmth.
Lucy screamed as the monstrous creature of a massive size carried her through darkness beneath the island’s ruins hidden deep within Ravenswood. Crying for her brother and parents, her pleas agitated the beast that shook her in its massive hands, before letting out a deep grunt, dropping her on hard stone. Whimpering, Lucy sniffled as her small hands felt around the darkness before screaming, feeling rough hands grabbing her small frame, ripping her coat, and cold-wet noses pressing against her face, followed by sniffling and deep snorts.
“M-Mommy…Johnny!” she cried, having her voice echo throughout the tunnels, but no one, at least not mortal, Demon or Wraith heard her screams, “Johnny…”
