Chapter Going Home
The training hall’s window was already open and the green ships glided in smoothly. The light’s of the hall were already on so I guessed Tory was already there waiting and sure enough when the ships landed in two rows as they had first been, there Tory was pacing the full length of the ginormous room and chewing on her nails. Her head snapped up as she saw the ships landing and a smile spread all the way across her face.
She rushed up in front of our now parked ship. I hurried out the open door, dragging Shadow behind me and gave Tory a big hug.
“I was so worried about all of you,” she said and smiling even wider as the Super Humans came out of their own ships. “They’re you all are! I couldn’t find you anywhere and it was only just a couple of hours ago that I realised you had gone with Alex. I’m glad you are back safe and sound!”
“There are a couple of kids injured,” I told her. “But Loreleigh’s seeing to them in the ships, they should be ok soon.”
“Well, I’m glad you are fine,” Tory said softly tousling my hair and looking past my shoulder at the Special Operations Crew. “Great job, Crew. I knew you could do it. Go get yourselves cleaned up and back to normal business around here.”
I remembered the girl who had covered the sun in a ginormous sound wave and brought it up to Tory.
“I saw a girl out there,” I began. “She screamed and covered the whole sun in an invisible barrier... Why isn’t she in the Special Operations Crew?”
“I guess we didn’t know her greatly,” she replied and patted me on the back. “I’m sure you’ll see to it when you get back.”
I was confused. Get back? What was she talking about. I wasn’t going anywhere.
As if reading the look of my face Tory smiled and said, “you are going back home to your parents house and taking Daniel with you.”
My heart caught in my throat at the thought of bringing home my lost twin brother that my parents had forgotten all about. Was Tory actually being serious? I looked around and found my brothers excited face in the crowd as he was being patted on the back and having his hair tousled by many Super Humans. He waved at me with a smile spreading from ear to ear. I waved back at him, trying to hide my worry that this family reunion will not turn out well at all.
Tory slapped my shoulder and laughed.
“You have nothing to worry about, Alex,” she said playfully. “I took the liberty of making them remember. It will be fine.”
“How did you do that?” I asked her.
“That’s for me to know,” she paused. “And for you to find out.”
I rolled my eyes and turned to Shadow, seeing a sad smile play on her lips. I didn’t want to leave her. I pulled her into my arms.
“You can come too,” I whispered in her hair. “Please.”
She shook her head against my chest.
“It’s no place for me,” she said.
I closed my eyes, smelling the smell of the ocean once more.
“I’m going to miss you,” I said and kissed her, pulling her close to me. “But I’ll be back in the blink of an eye.”
She smiled up at me more reassured and kissed my chin then she let go and winked at me.
“You better be back sooner or later,” she said mischievously. “Otherwise I’ll have to come and find you.”
“Please do,” I replied and watched her walk away, out through the training hall doors and down the hall with one last, shy wave. I turned back to Daniel’s face in the crowd but thought of one more thing.
“Everyone,” I boomed, my voice still louder than usual. “I’d like to say one last thank you before I head off. I’ve never seen anyone as strong and prepared as you have been today and I’m glad I was left in charge. I couldn’t have been given a better role if I do say so myself. So stay strong and I’ll be seeing you very shortly. For now, my brother and I have some business to take care of back at home.”
The Super Humans broke into a cacophony of cheers and applause as I walked through them to get to my brother. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and we walked together out of the training hall laughing as everyone still cheered us on.
We could still hear their applause halfway down the hall of Super Human Headquarters and I smiled. This truly was the best thing that could have happened in my boring scientific life. Turns out it wasn’t just science that made strange things happen. It was magic. A whole lot of it existing inside certain individuals and two of them happened to be my brother and I.
“Are you ready to meet the parents?” I asked him, messing up his hair.
“I sure hope so,” he replied laughing. “I missed them.”
We pushed each other playfully just like old times as we shoved open the door of Super Human Headquarters.
Bane, the wolf door knocker, whimpered as we walked down Camber Sands beach back toward our small cottage home.
“Later, Bane,” I smiled waving behind me.
I couldn’t help thinking about the next time I’d be back. The next time I’d smell Shadow Aqueous’ hair. The next time I’d lead the Super Human’s into a fierce battle to save the world. A slight dimming of the now normal sun told me that was sooner than I thought because a small part of that sun deep inside me, the holder of my power, stirred ever so slightly.
