Chapter 6
It is now 9 p.m. and Katie was getting tired. I thought I could carry her for a few miles. We only had five miles left before we could find a place to camp. I cannot risk camping and getting caught in Violet Moon territory. Especially now that we are rogues. I picked up
Katie and started to walk. Looking back at what was once my home, but now was my reason for my strength.
With Katie in my arms, it was a slow walk. At 11 p.m. we had only gone about half the way, and I needed to rest. I tried to reach out to Sasha so she could keep alert in case anyone found us, but she must still be resting from our merge, half-phase. I'll ask her what we should call it later. Sasha and I had a lot to discuss. She knew more than she was telling, and I wanted to know what it is.
I must have fallen asleep because I woke to a noise from someone. No, there were a few people approaching me. I tucked Katie behind me between the tree and myself. I could now sense three people. "Hello, I know you are there. We don't mean any harm. We are only crossing to get to the human town. I do not want to fight but will if challenged."
"Do you really think a small pup like you could take me or even any of us?" A tall man stepped out in shorts. He had shaggy blonde hair with electric blue eyes and tattoos down one arm. He c****d his head and smiled.
"I see you have a little one. Is she yours?"
"Yes, we are on the run. We have left our pack with no plan to return to pack life but to move on to the human world."
"I don't know Eric? Two rogues on Violet Moon property?" A dark man stepped forward.
"Come on Michael, you know what we should do. Take them to the Alpha." Said a beautiful blonde.
"Yes sister." Said Eric, the beautiful blonde. "But the Alpha isn't here, and they are just pups."
"I'm not a pup. I am 16," I said. I quickly covered my mouth. One of these days I need to control it.
"You are 16?" the one called Michael said. Coming really close he sniffed at me. "I don't smell a wolf." "I..I don't have one." I stammered.
"Curious." Said Eric. "I think we should let them go on to their human town. She is but a human after all if she has no wolf. As acting Alpha in place of Vicent as he is still at Dark Moon I think I get to decide."
"I think Vincent will be pissed if he finds out you made this type of decision," said the women.
"Reagan in that case I will definitely decide. Vincent and I assume the Dark Moon will be pissed." Eric looked back at me. "That is unless you would like to stay with me. I don't care if you don't have a wolf a pretty thing like you could be of value here." "She is going nowhere with you." Katie had woken up and started walking towards the wolves. They just laughed.
"I will let you pass as this pup is very brave but on one condition," Eric said when he grabbed for my hand. "You must tell me your name."
"Only if you promise not to mention it to anyone from Dark Moon if they come asking."
"No problem with that. We hate them," said Michael with a look of anger.
"I am Fillian," I said. With a small smile holding my breath that they will let us pass and not be the blood thirsty pack I was taught they were.
"Well little wolf that is what your name means right?" Eric asked. I nodded my head in the affirmative. "Stop by the Hotel Demondtree. The owner is a friend of mine and human. He will be able to help you just mention my name."
"Ok Eric stop flirting with the poor girl. If she left that pack to be a Rogue her life is hard enough." Reagan said. "She doesn't need to add your endless drama to it."
"Thank you. I will not forget this, and I hope one day I can repay the favor." I said and picked up Katie and began walking again.
I cannot believe they let us pass. "I told you the goddess had a plan," came Sasha.
"You are back," I thought. "I'm glad we didn't need you."
"Yes. I am still very weak and will need to be away again for the rest of the day, but you should be safe now. I will give you some of my energy to continue walking with Katie."
I continued to walk with Katie. At about 7 a.m. she awoke. We are in human territory now and should not have any more wolves after us. We stopped for a quick breakfast from the bread I had packed and drank some water. In only two more hours we should have reached the town. I will check out the Hotel Demondtree. I hope it is not a trap, but we do need a place to stay and even maybe a job.
Stepping into the Hotel Demondtree was like going back in time. The hotel had a 1920's feel and had a restaurant attached. It was pretty empty but one would expect that for 9:30. I walked up to the front desk and requested to speak to the owner. The older man with grey stubble, looked up from his paper, smiled and said, "Darling, I am the owner. What can I do for you?"
"I was told you may have a room for me here. Eric said you might be able to help me." I said hesitantly.
"Darling, you look like a deer ready to sprint away. I will cause you no harm. If Eric sent you, I can only imagine that you and the child are of the wolf variety."
I looked around before I answered, "Yes sir. We are rogues now but won't cause any problems. We left on our own accord and severed ties."
"I see" he said, scratching his chin. "Did your leaving have anything to do with the fading marks I see on you? If so, that could be why Eric sent you here. He knows I have a soft spot for the broken."
"I am not broke. Just need a job and a place to stay. If no job is available, I can pay to stay until we find a residence. I have cooked and cleaned for hundreds. I could be a help if you let me."
"What are your names?"
"I am Carmella." Fillian I thought was too wolf a name. "Katherine, but she goes by Katie." Katie peaked from behind me.
"Hello" she quipped.
"Well, aren't you just the cutest carrot top I have seen?"
"I'm not a carrot," Katie said and crossed her arms over her chest.
"I am Harold Demondtree and I think we can figure out the work and here is a key to a two-bedroom suite." He hands me a key. "Since it looks like you have gotten little rest the last few days....if ever." He looked me up and down. "We will begin tomorrow at 4 a.m. in the kitchen. Get some rest, Carmella. I will see you in the morning. I think we should call you Ella. It is easier to remember."
"Thank you sir."
"Call me Harold. I consider all those who work for me family,"
As I entered our room and put our stuff away, I had a feeling of peace come over me for the first time since I lost my father. Could this be our new home?
