Odarin the Good Wizard

Chapter 7

It was late in the afternoon that Odarin decided on a place to rest just off the main road and out of sight from people who may have taken advantage of him on his solo journey. He cleared an area that vaguely resembled a circle then produced his wand and conjured up a tent, a fire, a table, some beautiful food and sat down in a huge leather bound chair that was so comfortable he almost fell asleep in it.

While he ate his food with a great deal of satisfaction he began to think again, as he had want to do in the quiet times that he now had in his life, while listening to the birds announce the coming of night and that sleep was on its way. Odarin thought about all his years at school and the people he had come into contact with who were just as scared as he was with what life held in store for them. He came to a conclusion while sipping in his hot cup of pear monk tea and it was this...

There were Wizards that he met in all his time at that school that needed emotional rescue from the icebergs they found themselves in. All of their own doing and hopelessly trapped into a way of being that wasn’t good or propelled them forward into something that could take the place of the iceberg.

When the slightest amount of heat was applied to that iceberg, a little melted away, and if that Wizard in the iceberg realised this, and felt it, they could light their own internal flame and allow the ice that trapped them to melt away. But...if they were afraid they would only add more layers of ice to an existing problem that would never go away. Such was the fate for some of his Wizard colleagues...but not for Odarin.

He had shed his iceberg and was really happy probably for the first time in years. He wasn’t scared anymore and loved being out in nature. He respected his gifts of magic and most of all he respected himself. In many ways Odarin was an empath. He felt things very deeply. Some days he felt like he was an endurance athlete just running on the barest minimum to get to where he had to go and what he had to learn.

In taking this trek he was taking a well deserved break from that fast track he was on. It felt like he needed to have a break otherwise he was inadvertently giving to much of himself away and was find finding it hard to tell the difference from when he was ok or when he was over extending himself. He had to remember to use these skills on himself first and foremost to help himself, as much as he used them to help and care for others.

He finished his cup of tea and stood up standing very still listening to the forest and its beautiful night music that played into his ears. Even though the early morning light of dawn was some time away there was a light in his heart that wasn’t there when he was at school but was now starting to make his soul glow from within. Perhaps it was a feeling of optimism, the anticipation of good things to come. It is a feeling Odarin had not had in so long that if felt as foreign as it was welcome.

Odarin turned to look at his tent that he had conjured up and was a little disappointed at what he had done. His tent didn’t look well made or prepared in a fashion that spoke volumes of the kind of person he was or how he was feeling. It provoked pity and perhaps even scorn at how ‘rag tag’ it looked. Actually his green canvas tent looked more like a boney animal that had died some time back leaving nothing behind except bones and small amounts of skin.

So he took out his wand again and in the wink of a blink made his tent look 1000 times better and more comfortable than it was before. He made the comfy chair, table, cutlery and fire vanish with a quick gesticulation and then a light appear inside his new tent. Upon entering the tent his waved his wand and there was his bed from his home all ready for him to sleep soundly in...goose down pillows and all. It was time to rest and let his body heal while he was asleep.

This was how Odarin spent many decades of his life walking into a nice area, setting up a good campsite and resting in his new, and in most cases, beautiful surroundings. This was his first night in the forest and it wasn’t very quiet with only the sounds made by creatures who lived there so he stayed awake for far too long and it felt like he had just gone to sleep when the sun came up.

Authors Note: It’s all going to be ok for him because he ‘sound proofed’ the tent as a result of the woodland creatures keeping him awake all night and he slept like a baby after that.
