By the time I fully accepted the reality of Melissa's absence, two weeks had passed.
To show my resolve to everyone, I temporarily sent Courteney back to her father's territory.
Aaron had thrown multiple fits over this, crying and complaining to me. He even confided that since Courteney's pregnancy, her love for him had noticeably faded. Unable to do much else, I hired a nanny from the community to take care of his daily needs.
I wondered how Melissa was living now.
Could the Dark Alpha be torturing her?
"Can you consider the will of the pack for once? We've all released our Lunas. You should too. If your mark angers Agrigent, we might all pay the price."
The Special Mission Bureau had already sent countless people to repeat the same
nonsense.

Things were already chaotic at home.
Once Sawn left, Aaron, like a little tail, trailed behind me, tugging at my shirt, his voice a whisper.
"Daddy, is Mommy going to leave you? Does she really not want us anymore?"
I looked at his innocent face, unsure how to answer.
"I don't want to stay here. Can we go back to the hillside villa? Aunt Courteney hasn't answered my calls lately. How could Mommy be so cruel?"
"Why are you back so early? If there's nothing wrong, go out and play with your
friends."
I didn't know how to address these issues. I wanted to wait until I had things sorted out before speaking to him.
"Where has Aunt Courteney gone again? I miss her."
At this, Aaron's earlier impatience transformed into a bright smile.
"As for Mommy, where could she go? Let's not allow her to destroy our family."
Seeing that I was ignoring him, Aaron pouted but still ran outside.
I sat on the floor with paper and pen in hand, my mind filled with thoughts of Melissa.

"It's been a while, Kauffman! When are you going to marry Courteney? Your Melissa is no longer here, and the Meadow Wolf Pack needs a new Luna. Fate has already arranged it."
I turned to leave, but they clearly had no intention of letting me go.
