Chapter 642
I wasn't scared, but I did let out a scream.
Just then, a car horn blared obnoxiously loud, and a vehicle skidded to a halt beside us. The person who emerged was none other than the guy Jeremy had secretly tasked to tail me. He stared down my captor and said coolly, "Let her go." "And why would I do that just because you say so? Who the hell are you?" The guy holding me sounded so panicked, his voice cracked. I almost burst into laughter.
"If you value your life, you'll let him go," the man in front of me commanded, his presence undeniable.
"No way, no way, I'm not letting go. What are you gonna do about it, huh?" the guy behind me taunted.
My eyes nearly rolled out my head, thinking how this dude would drive any director nuts if he ever tried to act.
Predictably, my would-be rescuer frowned and took a step forward. My captor immediately bluffed, "Take one more step and she gets it."
Smack, smack...
The sound of clapping filled the air as Fanny approached with a smile, "Darling, isn't this real-life cosplay thrilling?"
As she spoke, my captor released me and flashed me a grin, "Did I scare you?"
I was so close to keeling over from laughing!
The man who tried to save me caught on then, his expression a mix of embarrassment and unease, with a hint of worry.
Fanny gave him a playful slap, "Not bad, handsome. Very manly and right on time too."
"Sorry, I thought it was... My mistake," he said before making a quick exit.
"Thanks, buddy," I called after him, teasingly waving him off.
After he left, Fanny's accomplice was also sent on his way amid her thanks.
The whole kidnapping scene was just a play, orchestrated via a message I sent to Fanny. I wanted to find out why Jeremy had someone follow me.
Fanny got into my car, "There, your test is done. Now, spill it. What's this all about?"
"Why would Jeremy have someone protect me? It's not like we have any history," I mused, absentmindedly fiddling with my ring.
"So, you think... Jeremy is protecting you on Ernest's behalf?" No one gets me like Fanny does.
That was exactly what I was thinking. But Ernest was gone. How could he have arranged for Jeremy to protect me?
Could he have had a premonition about his accident and made arrangements in advance?
"Licia, you don't seriously believe Ernest is still alive, do you?" Fanny could see right through me.
I looked at her, "What do you think?"
I shared my suspicions about Yolande's odd behavior and the various unsettling feelings I'd had recently.
Fanny sighed, "You really can't get over Ernest, can you?"
"It's not about getting over him. It's
just that, the more I think about it, the more things don't add up. Ernest's cremation was rushed, which is strange. We both signed organ donor cards. If he died, his body should have been donated, but it wasn't," I pondered out loud as we drove to the hospital.
"Your suspicions aren't unfounded, but you saw Ernest get hurt and turn into ashes," Fanny replied helplessly, "Deep down, you still can't accept that Ernest is gone."
I shook my head, "I haven't, I..."

I jingled the bracelet on my wrist, "What is it?"
"Don't get mad or curse me out," Fanny warned, making me frown.
"Out with it, no dilly-dallying."
Fanny pursed her lips, "Dig up Ernest's ashes and get a DNA test done. That'll tell you for sure."
