Chapter Psychiatric Ward…
When we got to base four I was surprised… It was more like a city then a base, reminded me of the other place… I followed Jessica, she was taking me somewhere. I wasn’t sure where though, we walked around for a bit. I saw a bunch of different types of people, I guess this is where the regular people live. The only people with guns I saw were guards, they patrolled around and looked like they were keeping people from fighting.
We got where we were going and Jessica turned around. “I’m sure you won’t like this but we won’t be around for a while… This will be good for you though. I know you’re a little insecure about how useful you are.” She put her hand on my shoulder. “Don’t do anything stupid, ok?” I nodded. then we walked in.
There was a girl sitting at a desk. She greeted us and then handed Jessica a clipboard… She wrote some stuff down and then handed it to me.
She looked at me oddly. “Write your name down. They know who you are and why you’re here. You’ll be staying here for a while, maybe a month or two.” Two months away from Jessica and Elizabeth… That didn’t sound good. I reluctantly wrote my name down, Red Krauss… At least I have a last name. Jessica gave the lady the clipboard back and sat back down in the chair next to me. “Are you scared?”
I wasn’t sure… “I guess I’m nervous, I’m not sure how this is going to turn out.”
She let out a sigh. “Don’t worry, it’ll be fine. They’re good people, they’ve helped me through some stressful times.” Jessica’s gotten help before?
Eventually someone came out, it was a doctor… He was looking at a clipboard before looking at us. “Oh, hello Jessica… Who might this be?”
Jessica smiled. “This is my sister. you know why she’s here right?”
He nodded. “I was told she had a mental breakdown, I wasn’t given any more details then that.”
Jessica scratched her chin before replying. “That’s probably for the best. I’m trusting you with her for a while.”
He bowed, that was odd. “It’s an honor then. I won’t disappoint the commander of base one. I promise, we’ll take good care of her.” Why did he bow?
Jessica put her hand on my shoulder and looked at me. “Follow him ok…” I looked at him then back at her, I was nervous… But I nodded.
She walked out of the building and I felt dread… I think my legs were shaking, I guess I’d become more dependent on her and Elizabeth then I thought. The idea of being alone, terrified me.
I was pulled out of it by a hand touching my shoulder, I turned around and it was that doctor. “Hi, I’m doctor Shah. Your name is Red correct?”
I reluctantly replied. “Y-yes.”
He smiled. “Please follow me, I promise everything is going to be fine.” He urged me to follow him, I was tempted to run out after Jessica… But she’d probably force me back in here. I followed him through a set of doors, we made our way to an elevator. “You’ll be staying on the third floor; every patient has a room to themselves so privacy won’t be an issue. You’ll also have your own bathroom in the room as well… We’ll find out your schedule tomorrow. Breakfast is at nine, lunch is at one, and dinner is at six.”
I wonder what the room looks like… I was also curious as of to where food is. “Where’s the cafeteria at?”
He chuckled. “A nurse will be by later today, they’ll be showing you around. The goal is to make you comfortable, getting to know your way around is one step towards that.” He’s very friendly…
I wanted to know when I could leave. “How long will I be here?”
He stayed his cheerful manner. “It shouldn’t be too long… I don’t know the details of what happened so it’s up to the psychiatrist you’ll be talking to…” So, he doesn’t know… That’s not very reassuring.” We got to the room, he opened the door for me and I walked in. There was a change of clothes on the bed, white t-shirt and a pair of white pants. “I’ll leave you be then, get a feel for your room. A nurse will be by around four.” He closed the door, there was a clock on the wall and it said two…
So, I had two hours to do nothing. I looked around the room, it had two chairs in front of a window. I could see across the city through it, I opened the window to get some fresh air in, there were bars on the outside… Did they have issues of people jumping? I guess it doesn’t matter to me. The bed was big enough for one person, it had rails that could be raised, might be useful if I roll off. The bathroom was by the entrance, I don’t think both doors could be opened at once. It had a toilet, sink, and shower, standard I guess… Different from the hospital at least. I put on the clothes, they were really comfortable. The bed foam, that was nice I guess. I didn’t really notice the difference between the spring and foam other than noise.
I laid around for the two hours, I wasn’t sure if I could do anything else. When I left the hospital, they gave me a sling for my arm, I guess they want me to avoid bumping it into anything. Eventually a nurse came by, it was a rather tall guy… I think he was around six feet tall, he towered over me. He chuckled to himself when he saw me, the height difference was; demeaning.
He smiled. “Hi, you must be Red Krauss?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
He seemed friendly enough. “I’m supposed to show you around, after were done with that I’ll show you where the cafeteria is.”
We walked around for a bit, he showed me where the signs were so that if I got lost. My room number was L3 – 27. The cafeteria was on the first floor, there were bathrooms near it as well… There were a few people here. I saw others wearing the same outfit they had on the bed, I saw maybe ten or twenty today? The nurse said that the others were probably else ware, I guess there’s a game room.
