Chapter 34
Martha and I are playing UNO and I am beating her to it. She hates it but I am having the time of my life and the wine is hitting all the right spots. After so many months we have finally decided to open the bottle of wine that Joshua had bought for me which I was supposed to drink after putting to bed.
There is a loud knock at the door. It almost sounds angry and the door swings open immediately. Martha and I look at each other wondering who would have the courage to walk into someone’s house like that.
‘I told everything I did in confidence. I didn’t expect you to stoop that low and use that information against Jackie.’ Peggy yells
She had two black lines written on her face and I am guessing it’s from tears mixed with mascara.
‘Your sister you mean?’ Martha asks
‘We were supposed to be best friends.’
Martha laughs. I am itching to take this up but I can tell that she is handling this really well.
‘I thought we were bestfriends Peggy, until you used the information I told you about my sister against her.’
‘I had no choice.’
‘Of course you had a choice, you could have told me the truth from the onset. You made me leave home and come live with you only because you wanted to create this drift between us but what you forgot is that you were telling me things about your life and some day I could use them against you the same way that you did me.’
Tears run down her eyes.
‘Martha I understand that we messed up your lives but do you realize the gravity of what you have done?’
Martha and I look at each other. There was a part of me that wasn’t okay with this but my heart does with the twins I am not feeling anything right now.
‘She was seventeen Martha. She had to make ends meet, we didn’t have money left by parents like you. She had to do what she had to do even though that meant sleeping with anyone and anything that could provide for our next meal.’
‘None of you are moved right?’
‘Peggy I think you need to leave. You have overstayed your welcome.’
‘I am sorry Nandy. Honestly I am that we messed up but what you have done to my sister is unacceptable, she will never be the same.’ She says crying some more
Martha breaths out deeply whilst I pick a glass of wine and drink from it.
‘We hurt you Nandy. We really did but you can’t do to us what we did to you. That’s not the type of person that you are.’
Without thinking twice I throw the glass of wine at her.
‘Jesus!’ She exclaims, it breaks and I see perks of blood on her chin where it hit.
‘You are going to come to my house and talk to me about how I should handle my pain? Do you have an idea what you and your sister put me through? Peggy you knew I was going out with your sister that day, or knew she was going to drug me, you knew she was sleeping with Joshua and you could have told Martha something but you didn’t.’
I pause.
‘I welcomed you into my home. I treated you like my young sister. I was going to be there for you come what may even though I didn’t know that Jackie was your sister. I needed all of you when my babies died. All of you and what did you do?’
‘You don’t know shit do you?’
‘Excuse me?’
‘Jackie felt bad for what happened, she was trying to make amends for everything and that is why she had to start a relationship with Emmanuel.’
‘What are you talking about?’
‘Nandy what exactly did Emmanuel tell you about the night you were drugged?’
‘She doesn’t have to tell you anything, why don’t you tell us what you know?’
‘You need to be very careful Nandy. Because if you think Joshua hurt you, then you don’t know pain.’
She starts for the door but I stop her.
‘You are better discovering for yourself. But be very careful. There is more pain where the first came from, they have the same blood running in their veins I hope you don’t get to die another death before you can realize what you are getting yourself into.’
