Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Maria couldn’t sit up and fell to one side immediately, prompting Frank to place his hand on her shoulder and pull her toward him.
Her body was pressed against Frank, and her head naturally leaned on his shoulder. The scent of medicine mixed with her womanly fragrance assailed him.
He frowned in displeasure, attempting to push Maria away. At that moment, Paige already handed the cup of medicine to
him.
Frank still furrowed his brows tightly. He lifted his arm. His large hand held the medicine cup while the other pinched Maria’s jaw.
He placed the cup near her lips, and with a slight raise of his wrist, he poured the medicine into her mouth.
Soon, the medicine trickled down from Maria’s lips, staining Frank’s hand. His pitch-black eyes were filled with intense disdain.
Paige watched anxiously from the side, fearing that Maria might choke.
Her concern wasn’t unwarranted. Maria soon erupted in a violent fit of coughing, spraying the recently ingested medicine. Some of it even landed on Frank’s white shirt.
Frank’s stern expression turned ominous. He threw the medicine cup towards Paige and let go of Maria. He stood up quickly and pulled out tissues from the bedside table. His eyes were filled with disgust and resentment.
“What an ungrateful woman!’ he thought.
The violent coughing also woke Maria, who had been unconscious. Her cheeks were flushed red, and her teary eyes, now opened wide, resembled those of an injured little creature, evoking pity.
It took her a while to catch her breath. With teary eyes, she looked towards the man who was wiping his fingers. She could still taste the bitter medicine in her mouth.
“Give her the medicine,” Frank commanded coldly, staring at the weakened and pitiful woman lying on the bed.
“Pretending to be so pitiful? Who is she trying to deceive? If not for her schemes, Nina wouldn’t still be lying in the hospital- I wouldn’t have to marry this woman!’ he thought angrily.
At the thought of Nina, the temperature in his black eyes plummeted, becoming cold to the extreme.
Frank’s icy gaze locked onto Maria, and his indifferent voice sounded like frost. “Maria, if you don’t want to die, drink the medicine!”
Maria took a deep breath, biting her lower lip. With great effort, she propped up her body, leaning against the headboard to catch her breath.
She reached out for the cup of medicine handed by the maid and, with lowered eyes, ignored the man’s chilly presence. She drank the medicine one sip at a time.
The medicine was bitter, making her frown.
She had always detested taking medicine. She didn’t know why. Swallowing medicine pills had been difficult for her, so her mother had given her liquid medicine instead.
She remembered the one time she had a sip. She had vowed never to take a second sip. She even had to eat a lot of candy afterward to ease the bitterness in her mouth.
The medicine still tasted as bitter as ever. She furrowed deeply but no longer resisted it. She drank it all.
Maria knew very well that she couldn’t afford any mishaps. If something were to happen to her, what would become of her mother?
She had to survive and wait for her mother to wake up.
When the cup was emptied, Maria held a hand over her mouth. Her stomach felt incredibly nauseous.
She was already weak due to her illness and hadn’t eaten anything for a day. Having consumed the bitter medicine, her stomach churned violently.
Her face, which was initially pale, now contorted in discomfort.
Frank, seeing her put the empty cup aside, revealed a sneer of disdain. She was so eager to drink the medicine. She did indeed value her life!
Then, he noticed Maria, whose face looked unpleasant as she faced him, parted her pale lips and retched.
