Chapter 7 Becoming a Gigolo (2)
"Queenie is such a nasty woman. Look what she had gotten Johnny into." Brown murmured as he walked to his room.
"Enough, you should stop blabbering nonsense. Nobody will think that you are a mute even if you don't talk. Get in and don't forget to wash your feet." Lucia pulled Brown along as she reprimanded him as they entered their bedroom.
Johnny saw them disappear into their room before collapsing on a sofa with a lighted cigarette. He wanted to blow off some steam before sleeping.
Suddenly, there was a pair of earplugs falling from above. It almost hit him.
"What the hell?" Johnny sprang up from the sofa and roared at Brown who was standing by the door.
"There's a MP3 in the cupboard, use that to plug into the device and listen to some music before you fall asleep. Don't keep eavesdropping on us. I am just afraid that if a single guy like you keeps listening to that kind of sound, you will have some mental problems soon. How is that? Look how considerate I am!" Brown was grinning at him.
"Get the hell out of my sight! One day, you will drop dead on that bed." Johnny couldn't help cursing.
Johnny switched off the lights and lied down on the sofa just like that. He covered himself with a blanket and lighted a cigarette. He blew on it slowly, and all those incidents hidden in his heart slowly surfaced.
Like Brown, he used to have a girlfriend when he was studying in university, although they were not in the same class. They belonged to the same faculty, and that girl's name was Queenie Nunez. It was a sweet name, and like her name, she was a looker too. She was the undisputed campus belle of their faculty with her innocent looks. Johnny had spent a long time to capture her heart, and in the end they were together as a couple.
They shared a very good relationship as they loved each other deeply. After graduation, Johnny returned to his hometown to work. He had passed the exams to be a civil servant, and he was dispatched to a small place. This was the nature of being a civil servant; unless you're in the top brass, as an ordinary employee the work was not too tedious and he could earn his living without any worries. However, after deductions from his monthly salary, the actual amount he made was barely three thousand. Queenie had found herself a job in an company near her school right after graduation, and she had a nice income that amounted to around five thousand a month.
Two years had gone by just like that, and the two of them were ready to tie the knot. However, at that time, Queenie's father had fallen sick. Her mother had long passed away when she was young, and she grew up with her father by her side. Her father's condition was very dire, and it was said that he had a very low chance of making it out of this alive. Of course, Queenie couldn't just watch her father die off like this. She would cherish every chance to save him. But they weren't well off in the first place and didn't have that much money to pay for the treatment. Johnny was not wealthy either since both of his parents were farmers in the countryside. They made do just by working on their fields and it was a miracle that they could successfully raise Johnny to this age. In order to gather enough money for Queenie's father to treat him, Johnny had borrowed money from his relatives, friends and colleagues. In the end, he had amassed around five hundred thousand for her father. However, after spending that humungous amount of money, her father's live still could not be saved. He was finally gone for good after holding on for no more than one year.
After Queenie's father had passed away, one day, she suddenly sent a text to Johnny. The text was still stored in his phone till this day. The message was short and concise, "I'm sorry. I am leaving you. I can't endure much longer this kind of frugal lifestyle. I am leaving to Pearl City. I want to live a rich life. Forget about me, and I wish you all the happiness in the world." After sending this message, Queenie suddenly evaporated from his life, and no matter how hard Johnny tried, he couldn't even sniff her shadows anywhere. There was absolutely no news of her from that moment on. At the same time, Johnny was shouldering a debt of five hundred thousand, which was borrowed from a lot of people through much difficulty. With that amount of debt, if he continued to work as a civil servant earning two thousand a month, he would go through his lifetime without being able to repay that amount fully.
In order to pay his debt, and to get an answer from Queenie, Johnny resigned and came to Pearl City alone. In the words of Brown, Johnny was the typical lovesick fool. He had been tricked by a woman and now he wasn't left with anything at all. Despite that, Johnny never complained about anything. He just worked hard to earn money to repay his debt, and he would do anything that could earn him a lot of money. In the end, he gave up on joining big companies to have an easy-going job, and he had become a delivery man, which according to him was a job that gave him a high income. In fact, being a delivery man wouldn't pay that much, at most he could earn five or six hundred a month. In a huge city like Pearl City, this was really not a high salary. Only Brown knew that Johnny had chosen to be a delivery man because it gave him the chance to scour the whole city on a daily basis. He would have a higher likelihood to bump into Queenie that way. That was all there was to it.
The next day, Johnny woke up like usual just some time after six. After waking up fully, he realized that he was without a job now, and there was nothing for him to do by waking up so early in the morning. Thinking that Jasmine's appointment with him was at eight thirty, he hesitated for quite a while before finally giving up on his plan to go to the talent market. After tidying himself quickly, he went to the end of the staircase and pushed his bike out of the shade. Then he began his journey.
He ate some breakfast in a breakfast shop nearby, and then he slowly rode to the community where Jasmine was in. He checked his watch and it was eight twenty-five. He parked his bike by the road and started to smoke while squatting by the bike. By the time it was half past eight, a BMW emerged from the villa complex. Johnny recognized that it belonged to Jasmine.
Jasmine stopped her car by Johnny and just stared at him. She knitted her brows and pointed to the bike next to him, "Is this your means of transportation?"
"What about it? Don't you know I am doing the earth a favour by riding it?"
"Can't you dress yourself up more nicely?" Jasmine then commented on Johnny's shirt which looked a little worn out.
"You are indeed peculiar. How I dress myself is up to me. Why do you care about it? Do you really have a job for me? Otherwise, I am leaving. I don't have time to shoot the breeze here with you." Johnny said exasperatedly, then he hopped onto his bike, looking like he was about to leave. He didn't actually believe that Jasmine was able to offer him a job in the first place.
"Hop on!" Jasmine called out after pressing her honk twice.
"What?"
"I said, hop into the car." Jasmine repeated herself.
"Wait. Let me lock my bike." Johnny hesitated for a moment but in the end he got off his bike and was going to lock it onto a lamp post by the road.
"Don't bother locking it, nobody will steal it." Jasmine sounded a little impatient.
Johnny thought about her words and found that she was right. It was just a poor-looking bike, and it wasn't likely anyone would set their eyes on it. Even if someone stole it, it could only be sold for around no more than twenty bucks. So, he went straight to pull the door to the passenger's seat and got in the car.
"Hold on to this." Jasmine took out a letter and tossed it at Johnny while she drove.
"What is this?" Johnny was curious.
"Your salary for this month. Ten thousand. Check it yourself whether the amount is correct." Jasmine said in an unconcerned tone.
Johnny peered into the envelope and found that she was right. There were indeed a stack of notes in it.
"Look, what are you actually scheming? I haven't done anything yet and you already gave me my salary. This is the first time that I earn money before I even do the job."
"What? You don't want it? Then give it back to me."
"No, wait. Of course I want it. There's no reason for me to refuse money, that's the general consensus around the world. Money is indeed the best thing I could get my hands on in this world." Johnny broke into a wide grin at that stack of money.
Seeing that Johnny was encapsulated by money alone, Jasmine couldn't help making a disgusted expression. She muttered, "Are you really that crazy about money?"☐☐
