My Past is Just Prologue (Janet and Nathaniel)

Chapter 464

Chapter 464 Can You Stay?

Janet exerted force and turned Nathaniel's shoulder, flipping his body over.

The intense burning sensation in his stomach caused Nathaniel to curl up in pain. His

face turned as white as paper, with veins popping on his temples.

Only then did Janet notice that Nathaniel's hand was tightly pressed against his belly. "Are you having stomach pain?"

Nathaniel gasped for breath, speaking intermittently, "I drank alcohol tonight. It's probably... an... an attack of my gastritis..."

"Did you eat anything tonight?"

Nathaniel avoided Janet's gaze, feeling somewhat disappointed and guilty at the same time. "No."

So, he had gone unnoticed by her all night.

Nathaniel had been busy engaging in a battle of wits with Chitt, and seeing their perfect understanding of each other made him even more frustrated. He had no mood to eat. Janet's irritation flared up. How could Nathaniel dare to drink so much on an empty stomach? It seemed like he really wanted to shorten his lifespan.

Janet surveyed her surroundings and raised her voice, "Is anyone here?!"

Nathaniel grabbed her sleeve weakly. "The staff are on leave... It's just the two of us here."

Janet gave him an exasperated glare before snapping, "Wait here!"

She left Nathaniel lying on the floor and hurriedly went upstairs.

If Janet hadn't coincidentally come to find Nathaniel, he would probably have suffered

in pain all alone in his own house without anyone noticing.

Janet navigated her way to Nathaniel's room with familiarity and barged in without

hesitation.

She found the light switch and flooded the room with brightness.

The room's furnishings were almost unchanged from before their divorce, except for the things on the walls.

There was a large frame containing their only wedding photo.

It was a forced picture, as Nicolas had insisted that Nathaniel couldn't have a wedding reception venue without a picture of the newlyweds. Nathaniel had reluctantly agreed to this one photo.

In the picture, Nathaniel had a cold expression, as if he was taking a photo with a stranger. His body instinctively leaned away from Janet.

On the other hand, Janet wore a particularly sweet smile. Her hand, adorned with lace gloves, gently rested on Nathaniel's arm, but only halfway, appearing somewhat detached.

Both of them possessed exceptional looks and extraordinary temperament. Logically, they should have made a perfect couple.

But there was a sense of alienation, and even worse than a wedding studio model photo.

Janet stood beneath the picture frame, feeling a sharp ache in her heart.

Janet knew that the smile in the photo was borrowed from Anastasia's picture.

Janet had wanted to make Nathaniel happy that day, at least for a moment, to make him not despise her so much.

But in reality, Nathaniel hadn't even spared her a glance.

Nathaniel had ordered the photo to be discarded on their wedding night itself. Janet had quietly retrieved it from the hotel's trash can and brought it back home. Janet had hidden the picture in a corner of the basement. On many nights when Nathaniel didn't come home, she would gaze at it alone, lost in her thoughts.

The photo became her bittersweet solace, a remedy for her fantasies that had carried her through three long years.

Janet looked at the picture. Now, Nathaniel had taken the photo out and hung it here. But what did he mean? Her heart, once overflowing with love for him, had turned to ice, forming an impenetrable wall.

Janet diverted her gaze and walked towards the bedside table.

She opened the second drawer, and as expected, found the prepared stomach medicine.

It was the result of Janet's visits to countless doctors, searching for the right medicine for Nathaniel's condition. With his frequent social engagements and inevitable drinking, this medicine provided the fastest relief for his pain.

Taking the medicine in her hand, Janet left the room without a hint of nostalgia.

Nathaniel was lying on the floor, barely conscious from the pain.

Passing through the kitchen, she instinctively boiled some water, preparing warm

water.

Nathaniel had a delicate stomach, and the doctors had insisted that the medicine be taken with warm water for optimal effect.

Janet looked at the cup of water in her hand, momentarily lost in her thoughts.

Even after being apart for so long, she still remembered these details.

Janet closed her eyes, shaking off the memories, and approached Nathaniel. She squatted down in front of him.

"Get up and take your medicine."

Nathaniel didn't respond; he remained lying down.

Janet placed the cup of warm water on the floor and gently tapped his face.

"Nathaniel, wake up."

The heat of her touch made her recoil.

Could he have a fever?

Janet grabbed Nathaniel's collar and struggled to lift him from the floor.

Janet placed her hand on his forehead, then touched her own, confirming that Nathaniel

had a slight fever.

Janet's fingertips were cold, and

Nathaniel, in his hazy state, regained

some clarity. Nathaniel weakly

supported himself against the floor, making it easier for Janet to

assist him.

Seeing Nathaniel awake, Janet handed him the water and brought the medicine to his lips.

Nathaniel held the pill in his mouth, but as he reached for the cup, his fingers went limp.

And the cup slipped from his hand, spilling its contents onto Janet's clothes, drenching a large area.

Nathaniel's mind buzzed, and he stared blankly at Janet, her wet clothes translucent.

"Don't look!"

Get Bonne

Janet pressed her hand against her chest.

She was grateful that the cup contained warm water and not hot water; otherwise, she would have been scalded by now.

Nathaniel quickly averted his gaze, a

faint blush coloring his cheeks. His

voice hoarse, he apologized, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..."

Janet pulled her hand away from his grip, a cold expression on her face, as she refilled the cup with water.

In her past life, she must have owed Nathaniel a great deal of money to end up in such a

state in this life.

After taking the medicine, Janet managed to guide Nathaniel to the couch, preparing to leave.

But Nathaniel grasped her wrist firmly. "Wait, can you stay?"

Janet glanced at him indifferently. "You've taken the medicine. It won't be more than five minutes until it takes effect.

"Once you're feeling better, you can go upstairs to your room and sleep."

Nathaniel's forehead was still sweaty, and his lips were as pale as snow.

"But right now, I feel sore all over. And my head, it's like there are countless stars spinning in my mind.

"I might have a fever. The last time I was hospitalized, the doctor warned me against drinking alcohol as it could trigger inflammation."

Janet's inquisitive gaze wandered on Nathaniel's pale face. "Hasn't your injury already healed?"

Nathaniel touched his forehead, devoid of any scars, and coughed weakly, pressing his

fist against his lips.

"It's possible that the external

wounds have healed, but the internal injuries haven't fully recovered. Drinking alcohol might cause some complications."

Janet squinted at Nathaniel with suspicion, examining him closely.

With a sinking expression, Nathaniel looked down at the ground, his voice filled with melancholy.

"You know, I got injured because of Beacher. You won't just abandon me, right?"

Nathaniel's tone was pitiful, as if Janet leaving him would make her an unforgivable

villain.

"We don't even have a single servant in this house. If I were to have a high fever, there

wouldn't even be someone to call an ambulance for me...

"Stop!"

Janet raised her hand, interrupting Nathaniel's repetitive complaining.

The incident was caused by Beacher, and ultimately, it was Janet's own fault because Nathaniel was trying to avenge her.

"Are you willing to stay?" Nathaniel's weakened eyes brightened slightly.

Janet cast him a dissatisfied glance. "I'll leave once you fall asleep."

This answer fell a little short of Nathaniel's expectations, but he was already content.

Janet propped up a pillow, placed it under Nathaniel's neck, and fetched a blanket to cover his abdomen.
