Chapter 40: Legendary Quest
The atmosphere inside of the town was tense and grim. Rain hammered down upon the troops atop the wall. Kace looked to his left and right at the goblins and orcs standing beside him. Before them, upon the open stretching out in front of the town stood the combined force of the heroes and mercenaries.
Amongst the five enemy commanders standing with their own troops Kace recognised Sarah, Gregory and Phillip. Phillip still being alive had delivered quite a shock to him.
'I know I killed him so how is he here now?' Kace furrowed his brow as he thought about the matter.
On the other side however...
"Sir, Gregory has sent me to report that the figure above the gates. The one with the halberd. Is most likely the monster that killed your son."
Urien stared at the message barer before turning his sights back to the gate. Although the halberd and heavy armour were not mentioned before the coat itself certainly fit the description.
"I'll have your damn head!" Urien cried in his anger.
Gregory, Sarah and Phillip were all staring at his figure. There was a big difference in how he carried himself and how he looked to when each of them had met him.
They almost could not believe it was the same person. Phillip still held a grudge for suffering a death at his hands and Gregory wanted nothing more than to pound his face in. It seemed that only Sarah was uninterested in him as she stood to the side.
Instead her eyes were focused on the creature to his right. That one gave her a bad feeling.
'Is that the one that wiped out the Mages?' she wondered.
Her eyes never once wavered as she glared at Grugda. Unaware of what type of monster he was. She felt a shiver run down her spine as the creatures gaze seemed to fall on her.
Back on the wall...
"Too many. Strong ones." Grugda said as he glanced at the commanders though he never spared a look for Urien.
"Yeah, this is going to be a hard fight." Kace replied as the rain pounded on his hood.
The town was well prepared for a siege. Everyone had been busy building proper barricades and siege weapons. They had outfitted the entire army including the trolls with weapons and armour. Either taken from the dead or forged using the smithies in town.
They were looking like a real army now. One that was ready to march over the human race. Though their numbers were not high enough for that yet.
Kace looked behind him to where the Goblin King Shagrat was. Vaskra who was by his side gave him a nod. Gyn was by Kharja's side who had taken command of all the orcs.
With the nod from Vaskra, Kace knew it was time to begin. With a smile he raised his hand to give the signal. The goblins below busied themselves as they loaded the catapults.
"Let's do this." he whispered to himself as a viscious smile formed beneath his mask.
With the fall of his hand the thudding of the catapults launching could be heard all throughout the town. As the ammunition rose it suddenly split apart.
"What are they thinking? We're well beyond the range of such things?" Lucas mused as he watched the ammo falling from the sky.
However the troops with him soon recognised the ammo for what it is. Causing them to grip their weapons in both fear and anger. As the ammo like the rain struck the ground a devastating smell filled their noses. It was rotten flesh clinging to severed limbs and heads that had been launched at them!
Kace smiled at the effect of his psychological attack. Any human would be unnerved to have body parts launched at them. Basically announcing the fate they would receive if they went against the monsters now occupying the town.
It was clear it had more of an effect on the mercenaries however the heroes were not entirely unaffected. Urien looked around and held back his anger as he noticed some of the troops deserting their army. Although he was angry he also could not blame them.
This had originally been an easy paying job. Now it was turning into a full scale battle where death would be following them the whole time. So this coupled with the things that had happened in the forest there was bound to be some people who had their will broken.
"Attack!" Urien roared, not waiting for either Lucas to give his command or for more deserters to appear.
Kace watched as the largest section of the allied force began their assault. Even from this distance it was obviously the section that belonged to the Mercenary Guild. Kace clicked his tongue at this. He had been hoping to bait the heroes in.
They only had so many lumps of stone they could fire with the catapults. These were mostly gathered from the destroyed buildings. Obviously the best use for them would be if they could crush as many of the heroes as possible.
Noticing the situation Grugda stepped forward. Gathering an abundant amount of mana he released a spell. The earth cracked and tremored as it split. Pulling away from itself to create a large crevice separating the town walls from the rushing mercenaries.
With this they had been diverted to go around it. Making easy targets for the goblin manned ballistas atop the walls. They had more bolts for these weapons due the abundance of metal that was of no use to them that had been found in the town. Quickly melting it down to create these bolts.
Screams from the injured and dieing could be heard from the battlefield. All of them from the allied forces side. Urien remained unblinking as he gauged the devastating consequences of his premature attack.
The only good thing that had come from it was that they had forcefully revealed one of the cards the monsters had. They had now confirmed that Grugda was indeed the monster from the pursuit as well as the likely culprit of the downfall of the Mages Association as Sarah had reported it.
This painted a large target on the Eljeins back. Giving the allied commanders the false impression that Grugda was actually the ringleader of the monster forces.
Lucas decided to hold back his forces as he allowed Urien to take the hit while they uncovered the strengths and weaknesses of what they were up against. The monsters were far better armed and more intelligent than he had imagined.
Gregory was out on the field being the one to lead the charge. His fists were strong enough to even deal with the large bolts as they flew towards him.
Bang!
Another one was knocked aside and into the ground by his fist. He wanted to be the first to scale the wall and deal with the monster that had killed his masters son and escaped him. He needed to reclaim the honour that he had lost on that fateful night.
Meanwhile Kace was quite pleased at the havoc they had wrought on the enemy forces. The initial assault had already lost its momentum and with each passing moment the casualty list was piling up.contemporary romance
He found that he had begun to like the sound of humans struggling for their life with all they had. Further cementing his mentality towards the monstrous side. As the rain continued to beat down heavily he watched as it turned crimson as it came into contact with the fallen on the fields.
It created a startlingly beautiful sight in his eyes. Something that he most likely would see time and time again. 'I'm no longer who I once was. Here I can be far more.' he found himself thinking.
His eyes were suddenly drawn to a figure that was racing around the crevice. Making a beeline for the walls. These actions were raising the moral of those who were still on the field. Causing them to rally and follow behind him.
As the figure got closer he recognised it to be the man who had given him a beating in the mansion. His eyes flashed with a golden light as he traced the man's movements. 'I wonder how we compare to each other now.' he wondered.
His halberd tapped against the wall in a rhythmic manner as he paced towards the section where Gregory would appear. He watched as Gregory swatted away the heavy bolts from the ballistas that had been turned on him. Excitement could be felt swelling up from within.
Eventually his prey had reached the base of the wall. None of the other sections of the allied forces had moved to reinforce the frontline. This made Kace happy. Unbeknownst to him that they were waiting to see how powerful he was.
Gregory ran straight up the wall. Putting enough force into his legs that his feet were creating foothold in the wall as he kicked it. With amazing speed he appeared to be flying up the wall.
As he got closer Kace raised his halberd. Ready for the fight that was about to begin. With a deep breath he cast [Ice Spear]. As it formed Gregory's eyes went wide. He knew that the monster before him had not displayed this type of ability before.
Meanwhile for all the heroes present a new quest had appeared on their systems.
