Chapter 7
“Why is her face so swollen?”
When Lily saw that Simon had noticed my face but didn’t react otherwise, she felt relieved and continued to fabricate her story..
What she didn’t know was that Simon didn’t recognize me because my face was completely swollen and covered in blood. I had never been in such a pitiful state in the past.
The situation was so dire that even Simon, who had known me since childhood, couldn’t immediately recognize me. Simon appeared anxious and stood up.
“Alright, I hope this doesn’t happen again. Replace the receptionist and fire the security guards downstairs.”
Simon’s anger silenced everyone. After making the arrangements, Simon was prepared to leave again.
But he felt something tugging at his pants and looked down to see me clinging desperately to his pants.
“Simmy…”
At the mention of Simmy, Simon’s entire body trembled. It was his nickname, known only to the two of us.
Jealous, Lily rushed over, trying to separate us. “Mr. Gates, this woman is insane. Who knows what other contagious diseases she might have. Keep your distance.”
But the next second, Simon pushed her away and shouted, “Get lost!”
Lily glared at me with even more anger.
The sudden turn of events frightened everyone, freezing them in place. Only Lily still tried to speak, attempting to incite further trouble.
Simon carefully wiped my face and softly called out, “Laura.”
He muttered to himself, “You’re alright, you must be alright.”
No one had ever seen the usually calm and aloof Simon like this, and their fear grew exponentially. Lily, now on the ground, was unable to move.
“Who did this?”
Simon picked me up in his arms and looked angrily at the people around him.
I wanted to reach out to smooth out his brows, but didn’t have the strength. My attempt also made me spit out a mouthful of blood.
The blood landed on his suit and began spreading.
The next moment, I finally lost my strength and lost consciousness.
When I woke up again, I was in the hospital. Simon wasn’t there. Only the care worker was by my side.
She was very happy to see me awake and handed me a glass of water. “Mr. Gates said that he had something to take care of but will be back soon.”
Just as she set the glass down, Simon walked in.
Seeing me battered and lying in the hospital bed, his eyes turned red.
“Don’t worry. I won’t let anyone who has done this to you go unpunished.”
The door opened once more. Lily was brought in by several bodyguards.
Simon kicked her behind her kneecap, making her fall to her knees. Her body was covered in wounds, all marked by deep knife cuts.
Simon gently stroked my forehead. “Baby, don’t worry. While you were unconscious for the past three hours, she also suffered.
“No matter what she did to you, I will make sure it all comes back to her.”
Lily lay on the ground like a dying animal, gasping for breath.
When Simon cleared his throat, Lily shuddered subconsciously.
Clearly, for the three hours that I was out, it had been a complete nightmare for her.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Gates. I failed to recognize your esteemed status. Please, show mercy and spare me. Mr. Gates has already punished me. My body is covered in the wounds he inflicted. It hurts so much. I’m really in so much pain. Mrs. Gates, please forgive me.”
But her pain was nothing compared to the agony in my heart. Her physical wounds would eventually heal. But my dead child would never return.
I turned my head to look out the window, a tear trickled down my cheek.
It was too late. No matter what price Lily paid, it was too late.
I placed my hand on my flat belly and managed a faint, sorrowful smile. “Honey, our child is gone.”
