Chapter 18
Chapter 18 Apology For My Tardiness
The moment Christopher said those words, Julianna looked at her husband in shock.
Christopher was a retired soldier after all, and he possessed no power whatsoever to go against the Cordringtons! The very next second, a terrifying thought crossed Julianna's mind. Is Christopher planning to kill someone?
After all, Christopher used to be a soldier, and it isn't uncommon for him to kill bad people.
But, how is that possible now that he is already retired?
With those thoughts in mind, Julianna began to panic. If Christopher did kill somebody publicly, it would be a death sentence for him!
"Christopher, don't do anything stupid. Let's go," said Julianna nervously.
At first, Christopher was taken aback. It took him a split second before he realized what his wife was implying. "Relax. I'm not going to kill anybody."
He then turned around and shouted to the few men who were standing behind Jared, "Are all of you the notaries that Jared has engaged?"
"Well, I didn't expect you to recognize us," said the leader of the group with a wry smile.
"All of you shouldn't be here!" warned Christopher as a cold glint flashed across his eyes.
"Hahaha! We shouldn't be here? Are you dreaming? Do you really think we have no idea what you have done?"
"That's right. Your family is suspected of stealing the deed from Fabian Murray and even has the deed notarized. Our trip here is to inform you that the notarization has been nulled. All your previous efforts have gone down the drain," sneered a middle-aged man in the group.
Before that, Jared had already spent tons of money in engaging them for their services. Thus, one word from them was enough to send Christopher into the abyss.
As far as they were concerned, there was no big deal in dealing with a veteran.
"We didn't expect that you guys are thieves. You should be arrested."
"How can a soldier return and become a thief? You are an embarrassment to all the other soldiers!"
Jared's men began to spew insults onto Christopher.
To them, Christopher was a nobody who could be bullied by anyone.
When Julianna saw her husband being pushed around, her heart ached for him. She quickly gave Christopher a tug to stop him.
Since they could not fight against the Cordringtons, they could always pick another location.
"It's fine. I told you earlier on that no one will be able to hurt you, and I mean it."
Christopher glanced at Julianna in earnest. For some reason, when she saw the look in his eyes, she felt safe as if she knew Christopher would protect her just like he had promised.
However, at that instant, Julianna was still very worried because she had no idea what her husband was going to do.
Jared could not help but smirk when he heard what Christopher said to Julianna.
From Jared's point of view, it was all pointless.
"Christopher, don't bother to put on a tough front. It's meaningless. This is my territory. Upon my command, these notaries will issue an authentic notarization document for you. As for the one that you have before this, it will be null and void. Furthermore, you will even go to jail," mocked Jared.
"Oh? One word from me and I can also make all of them lose their jobs. On top of that, they will be investigated and dealt with accordingly!" said Christopher with a disdainful smile.
The moment Christopher finished talking, everyone became silent before bursting out in a fit of laughter.
"Hahaha!"
"Oh my God! This is hilarious!" everyone around them roared in laughter as if they had heard the funniest joke in the world. Some of Jared's men laughed till their tears came out while the others like Fabian and Fabio could not stop guffawing.
"Did you say you can make us lose our jobs? Who the hell do you think you are?" questioned the leader of the group furiously.
"Now, I'm giving both of you one last chance. Leave now, and this will be over. Otherwise, don't blame me."
"Yes! Who do you think you are? How dare you try to act cool in front of us!"
The rest of the notaries became infuriated. Christopher was only a retired soldier, and they came in contact with so many retired soldiers every day. All of them were very respectful when they came to ask for notarization.
"I refused to leave! I want to see how you intend to get me discharged from my position!" The leader of the group challenged him.
"That's right. I'm not leaving either."
"None of us are leaving."
To them, Christopher was just a clown living in his own world. What kind of power can a veteran possibly have?
Christopher teased them, "Excellent! Well done! All of you are very brave indeed!"
One of the notaries retorted angrily, "Bollocks! It's your honor that Mr. Cordrington is interested in your wife."
In their eyes, most retired soldiers were simpletons. Once they returned to society, they could only become security guards at best.
Therefore, it was unbelievable that someone as useless as him was actually humiliating them openly.
There was no way they could keep their cool.
Christopher's face fell, and he said coldly, "As government officers, you have failed to carry out your duties justly. In addition, you have demeaned my wife. What do you think I should do to you?"
"D*mn it! Have you gone mad? You're only a retired soldier. What can you possibly do to us? Take a good look. Everyone here today is from wealthy families. You aren't fit to be compared with Mr. Cordrington. If you still have some sense, we may beg for mercy on your behalf," sneered another notary.
Christopher responded with a grim and vicious expression, "I think you are sick and tired of living!"
"Bloody hell! I think you're getting out of hand. Mr. Cordrington, don't waste any more time talking to him. Just get someone to break his legs and throw him out." Fabio could not take it anymore. Christopher has no real ability. What gives him the right to be so bold?
Jared was also getting tired of Christopher's attitude.
"Get him!"
With a gesture of his hand, his bodyguards came over and surrounded Christopher.
All of Jared's bodyguards were well built. They were taller than Christopher and looked fierce and tough.
At that point, everyone knew it was over for Christopher.
However, Christopher scoffed, "Let me give you a word of advice. This isn't something you should get involved in."
"B*stard! You're only a soldier. Do you think that all of us will be afraid of you?"
Those burly bodyguards did not give a d*mn about Christopher's threat.
Christopher rolled up his sleeves and was prepared to fight.
At that moment, everyone in the ballroom turned their attention over to where Christopher was as the tension in the air grew thicker. Most of them did not think Christopher was going to make it. After all, he hac no power or backup. There was no way he could win the fight against Jared.
Just then, an angry voice roared and attracted everyone's attention.
All of them looked in that direction and wanted to see the brave soul who dared to stop Jared.
The first person they saw was a tall and muscular man in work clothes. He appeared ruthless, but everyone present had no idea who he was. Instead, they recognized the man walking behind him immediately. "Oh my God! Isn't that the secretary of the mayor, Caleb Larson?"
Furthermore, Caleb was walking behind the burly man respectfully. That could only mean that the burly man was someone of a higher status.
Obviously, Jared knew who Caleb was. His dad was, after all, the chairman of Cordrington Corporation. Therefore, Jared met quite a number of people as he followed his dad around.
He could not help but become nervous. Caleb's appearance was unexpected. A smile immediately appeared on Jared's face as he ran over to greet him, "Mr. Larson, what are you doing here? Who is this?" Caleb answered coldly, "He's in charge of all of us now."
When Jared heard that, he was momentarily stunned. He did not expect the Custodian of Jadeborough to be there in person!
To top it off, the man was youthful-looking, but he did look ruthless, for sure.
Naturally, that did not affect Jared's congeniality. "Hi, how do you do? I'm Jared from Cordrington Corporation. It's an honor to have you here, Custodian."
Surprisingly, that man did not even cast a glance in Jared's direction. Instead, he strode up to Christopher, and saluted him before saying loudly, "Mr. Yaeger, please forgive me for my tardiness!"
