Chapter 18
Chapter 18
Mary had always been cold toward Charlotte, and things got worse after Charlotte’s wedding to Zachary, Charlotte couldn’t put a finger on one thing, but it was pretty obvious Mary wasn’t her top fan.
But after Charlotte announced her plans to divorce Zachary, Mary acted like she hadn’t heard a thing. Charlotte was utterly confused.
When Charlotte got to Maple Estates, Gordon was already there, changed and slouched wearily at the dining table. “Hey,” Charlotte said.
“Did you eat yet?”
“Nope.” Charlotte shook her head. She’d only had lunch with Mary at some social event and spent the rest of her time at the Sullivan’s house fretting over how to tell Jerry about her plans to divorce. When Jerry gave her the green light to go, she bolted. She didn’t want to risk staying another night there.
Gordon asked curiously, “What did you and Mary do today?” The pictures from the social event were all over Liene City.
‘I thought Charlotte wasn’t keen on the Sullivan family anymore, but…‘ Gordon mused.
Charlotte came over and took the seat across from Gordon. A servant handed her a fork and knife. “You’re not usually a busybody, Gordon. Lay off the gossip magazines.”
“I’m worried about you, that’s all,” Gordon admitted. Charlotte had returned to Liene City to look into something about her grandma. Ideally, she wanted to cut all ties with the Sullivans. The investigation part was working out well. But the whole cutting–ties thing…
“There’s a snag,” Charlotte frowned.
“Jerry didn’t agree with you?” Gordon asked.
“Exactly.” Charlotte nodded. Gordon knew how much Jerry meant to her. When she’d lost her entire family, Jerry, a close friend of her grandma’s, had been there for her. He was the only one who’d cared and taken good care of her.
Gordon furrowed his brow but soon eased it. “Well, I guess your issue is going to be sorted out
soon.”
“What do you mean?”
“Jerry nearly passed away when you left three years ago. To be honest, I think he’s been holding on

just for you,” Gordon added.
That hit Charlotte hard. She looked at Gordon, worry all over her face.
Gordon went on. “I didn’t know there was someone who cared so much about you.”
Hearing that made Charlotte’s heart hurt. Gordon knew Charlotte had left Liene City heartbroken. What he didn’t know was that there was someone she missed in this city.

At night, Zachary went back into the Sullivan’s house, catching the butler off guard. It had been years since Zachary hung around this place.
‘He crashed here last night, yeah, but why’s he back tonight?‘ puzzled the butler.
“Mr. Zachary Sullivan.” The butler greeted him with a respectful nod.
Zachary gave the bright house a fleeting look, then saw the empty dining room. His eyebrows pinched together, he asked, “Did I skip dinner or something?”
“No, it’s just your grandpa and mom wanted to eat alone tonight.”
“And her?” Zachary was on edge.
“Charlotte left this afternoon,” the butler said.
Zachary’s expression turned sour. ‘So, did she just up and leave? Why? Didn’t she go to that social
gathering with my mom earlier today?‘ Zachary’s mind took a nervous spin.
