Chapter 16 Tell Me How Was It Your Fault
Chapter 16 Tell Me How Was It Your Fault
"It's too hot now. Why don't we come here at night when the lights are on?"
Maggie said so hastily.
The two of them were watching the koi while Maggie was holding an umbrella for them, and she didn't want to witness their public display of affection on such a hot day.
She held the umbrella for them, and said to Kendrick, "Nancy and her family come here today, but Brett is still on the way. I think he will be here soon. Well, it has not been so lively for a long time in the family. Ken, if you don't like the noise, how about I take you upstairs directly through the side door?"
"Well, since I came here, there is no reason to avoid it."
"All right. Let's go to the hall then."
Nancy who Maggie had just mentioned was a real piece of work. She was arrogant and always shot from the hip.
Some memories popped up in Natalie's mind.
"You would be no one but a girl just marrying to bring good luck if we were in ancient times. How can you have no greeting to the elders? Look at your bad manners."
"And just don't have many hopes. If you give birth to a baby earlier, you might be back in the saddle. Well, I'm wondering whether Kendrick is sterile based on his physical condition."
"You are so skinny and unlovable. I don't think you are lucky at first glance. Well, if you are, how will you marry Ken?"
It was rather peculiar.
Such painful impressions from the original owner were quite deep in Natalie's mind.
Many of them were actually bad, hardly good.
Even when Natalie wanted to search for some sweet memories about Orion and Litzy, she just found them very few.
As she thought about it, they had arrived in the hall.
"Well well, Kendrick is back." Nancy's voice was heard, becoming rather abrupt in the hall, "Look at you, you just run around as you are not so mobile. Well, it's all right if you don't come. No one will blame you."
Probably Nancy was like those troublesome busybodies who one would meet when he went home for the New Year.
"Brett rarely comes home. How can I not be here, since you are back?" said Kendrick distantly.
Nancy was speechless, "..."
She turned to look at Natalie, and said indifferently, "Well, Natalie, how can you be the same as before and have no greeting to the elders?"
Natalie was the only outsider here, and the most vulnerable one superficially.
Nancy just bullied the fable one.
Hearing that, Natalie went to Nancy immediately. She bent down and bowed, greeting in the standard way, "Hello, Nancy." And then she turned to look at the middle-aged man with a slightly embarrassed look sitting beside her, and started to greet him, "Hello, Chad." After that, she touched the head of Natalie's son lovingly, "Well, I haven't seen you in a few months, and you've grown so tall!"
But the child immediately shook off her hand and said angrily, "That is annoying. Just don't touch me."
What a spoiled brat he was.
Kendrick frowned.
But Natalie still smiled slightly instead, "Well, what a temper you have. I remember... you are in elementary school. Am I right?"
She didn't remember his name.
"He is in the third-year class."
"He looks so smart. Well, he must perform rather well in the class!"
Hearing the praise, Nancy said modestly, "Top ten in the grade."
"Oh?" Natalie said dramatically, "I think he is the top one. Well, being in the top ten is rather nice. Although nine students are better than him, after all, there are so many students in the grade. Well, just work harder and strive to be in the top three. Come on. I have faith in him."
It was a compliment.
But why did it sound so... uncomfortable?
Nancy found that something was wrong. She endured it and then said with a smile, "Natalie, you really love kids, don't you? You have been married for more than a year. When do you plan to have children then?"
Natalie found such a question a piece of cake.
She smiled gently, "We will, when the baby comes."
It seemed that she had given her answer, and that nothing important had been said.
"The daughter-in-law of Mr. Moody next door has been married for a year, but she has already had a second child."
"Well, if the first child is born, isn't another kid a second child?"
"Poof..." Maggie standing nearby couldn't help giggling.
When did Nat become so funny?
Nancy couldn't hold back anymore, and wanted to blaze out.
However, as she found Kendrick's deep and quiet face, she said gloomily, "Well, just out of my good intentions. You little kids, just never mind if you don't understand."
Kendrick smiled distantly, "Nancy, Nat is still young. We can talk about it later."
Although he was smiling, his look was not so polite.
Time had changed. Kendrick was not only the little child who had lost his parents and was bullied with no courage to fight back.
Nancy repressed all the resentment.
Edgar, the housekeeper, came down from upstairs at that moment. He saw Natalie and said, "Mrs. Ramsey, Seth is asking you to the study."
Hearing that, Natalie pointed at herself.
Alone?
Edgar stretched out his hand: "Please!"
Kendrick looked at her, giving her an encouraging look.
Seth was someone who could not be underestimated. He was determined and tough, having three sons and a daughter. Over these years, he had gradually retired from important positions in the group and delegated the power to his descendants.
Kendrick was the most outstanding one among the grandchildren, and he kept a low profile, having not fully released his energy.
Natalie knocked on the door of the study, and then heard a commanding voice, "Come in."
She pushed open the door and went in.
In the quaint and spacious study was sitting an august old man with white hair and a white robe which looked very much like the attire of a powerful family in the last century.
"Take a seat!"
He pointed to the chair in front of him and said in rich voice.
Natalie followed his words and sat down.
"I call you to come here, because Kendrick will never tell me the truth when I ask him and always try hard to muddle through." Seth turning round leaned on the chair behind him and said slowly, "I hear you were injured a while ago. What's going on then?"
Natalie was stumped for a moment.
"Tell me, is it because Kendrick treats you badly?"
He had been at the top for a long time. Although he asked without showing his emotions, she could still feel a great sense of oppression.
"It was my fault." Natalie admitted her mistake decisively.
"Oh?" Seth raised his eyebrows, "Tell me how then?"
"I was careless in making friends and I couldn't recognize people clearly." Natalie looked up to meet Seth's gaze, without avoiding his eyes, "My friend did something illegal, but I was fettered by our years of friendship. I wanted to give him a way out, and had an argument with Kendrick, during which I hurt myself accidentally." She spoke clearly and logically, "But I've come round. I will accept Kendrick's way of dealing with it, and no longer have objections."
After a pause, she added, "Since I marry into the Ramsey family, I should give priority to seeing things from the perspective of the family and Kendrick."
Probably, Seth didn't really care whether she was injured or not.
Instead, what he cared about was that whether what she had done would harm the interests of the family.
Sure enough.
After she said so, he relaxed a little.
"What about getting along with Kendrick? Is it all right?" Now Seth asked like a grandfather who really cared about his grandson, "Kendrick suffered from misfortune since he was a child, and had not been so mobile. Therefore, he is a very private person and doesn't like to talk much. Just be more tolerant of him."
"Although Kendrick doesn't like to talk, he takes care of me very much." Natalie said honestly, "He is nice, sincere and gentle, having a sense of responsibility."
"It's good for you to think so." Seth wanted to sit up straight, but suddenly he felt a sharp pain in his heart. He stood up with his face becoming grey immediately. With his hands putting on the table, he wanted to call someone, but just fell to the ground instead.
