Chapter My Daughter 7
Chapter 7
Ken took the money and rushed to the hospital, not even sparing me a glance.
The night wind was bone–chilling, and I crouched on the side of the road, huddling under the warm yellow streetlight.
I wanted to cry, but I couldn’t. Snowflakes fell on my eyelashes, cold and piercing.
A shadow loomed over me.
I looked up, and I would never forget this
moment.
Candice held an umbrella, one hand shielding me from the snow, and the other reaching out

to me, “Cloris… let’s go home.”
If I looked more closely, I’d see that her nose was red and she was occasionally sniffing.
Her brown pupils reflected my image, just like many years ago when we first met.
A young girl fighting a group of people, showing no signs of backing down.
They called her bastard, slut and filthy wretch. Until they were beaten to the ground, unable to get up, cowardly covering their faces, only to mutter “motherless wretch” and then ran off
with their tails between their legs.
The girl slowly sat on the road.

The rain began to pour at an inconvenient time, trickling down the clear windows of the convenience store. People on the street hurried by, trying to escape the downpour, but she
remained still.
Under the dim light, the feeling of wet clothes sticking to her body suddenly vanished. The girl looked up in confusion, and my eyes met hers directly.
Her expression was fierce. Neither of us spoke.
My eyes fell on the name tag on her school
uniform: Candice.
Noticing my gaze, she quickly covered her name tag. “What are you looking at?”

After a moment, she added, “Get lost… go
away.”
Her seemingly impenetrable facade was, in my eyes, like a porcupine with its quills raised.
I tossed my umbrella into her arms. “Don’t you know to take cover when it rains?”
Gradually, we became friends.
While I worked on my homework in the classroom, she would be nearby, nonchalantly
sucking on a lollipop.
When I went to the convenience store, she
followed me silently.

No matter what I did, I could always see her.
Then, I met Ken. He was bright, clean, and pure. His grades were excellent, and he always had a
faint lemon scent.
Despite his poor family background, he always managed to win scholarships.
I admired his hard work and respected his mental toughness.
But I knew he had a childhood sweetheart.
When they stood together, they looked like the
leads in a TV drama.
Still, I fell in love with him and pursued him relentlessly.
