Chapter 476 Divert His Attention
Marcus, together with Michael and Henry, walked out of the study together.
Eric sighed, stood up, and followed them. His initial plan to leave was delayed because of Jack's emergency.
That evening, Rachel couldn't sleep. She just kept on tossing and turning in bed.
She usually slept on time every night. But tonight was different. She couldn't sleep, no matter how hard she tried because she couldn't stop thinking about Jack.
After lying in bed for a long time, Rachel opened her eyes desperately. Still, she wasn't sleepy at all. Thinking that a glass of hot milk might help her fall asleep, she got up and went downstairs.
When she passed by the study, she saw a glimmer of light coming out from the ajar door.
Instead of going to the kitchen, she stopped and pushed the door to the study open. Jack was standing by the window with his back to the door, his shoulders taut and motionless.
She knew that although he looked calm on the surface, he was also worried about his current situation deep inside. Rachel pursed her lips as she felt a sudden pang in her heart. She gently said, "Jack, why are you not asleep yet?"
Jack turned around and smiled upon seeing her. "Why are you still up?" He walked up to her and helped her sit on the sofa.
Rachel looked up to him and stared at his bloodshot eyes.
Jack had been helping her to deal with Linda's affairs, so she knew that he hadn't gotten any good rest recently. Then all of a sudden, such a terrible incident happened. She patted the seat next to her and said, "Sit here."
"I'm not tired." Jack shook his head with a smile.
Rachel thought for a while and said, "But if you keep standing there, I have to look up at you when you talk to me. It's so tiring."
Hearing her words, Jack sat down at once.
The truth was, Rachel wanted to divert Jack's attention away from his worries. She took his hand, put it on her belly, and look at him with a smile. "I haven't made you feel like a real father yet." "What do you mean?" Obviously, Jack didn't know what to do. He was too hesitant to put his hand down on her belly.
Rachel was amused by the expression on his face. "Feel the movement of the baby in my belly. Don't hold back. Just lay your hand on my belly freely."
"Really? Won't I hurt the baby?" He still looked dubious.
Rachel burst into laughter.
"Don't worry. You won't hurt our baby."
Jack put down his hand on Rachel's belly gently. But he didn't look relaxed at all. After waiting for almost five minutes, he smiled and said, "The baby is moving."
"See?" Looking at his childish grin, Rachel felt the tenderness in her heart. "The baby is always awake in my belly."
With a complacent smile, Jack looked at her proudly and said, "Our baby must be very cute."
Rachel was at a loss. But of course, she felt glad that Jack had finally cheered up.
Since she got pregnant, they both had experienced so many things. They were not the usual couple who celebrated her pregnancy and shared warm moments together. Right now was the first time that they finally felt the happiness of being future parents.
So if she was full of bitterness in the past, she now felt lucky that Jack never stopped loving her. Fortunately, he never gave up on her, and she finally realized everything before it was too late. Now, they could continue holding each other's hands.
Jack put his other hand on Rachel's belly and continued talking to the baby. And every time the baby moved, he would scream excitedly.
Rachel felt a little strange because the scene was somewhat familiar. She felt like she had already seen this moment many times.
They sat on the sofa and talked about the baby for more than an hour.
But when Jack saw that Rachel yawned, he held her hand and beckoned to her to stand up. "It's getting late. You must go to bed now."
"How about you?" Rachel felt that her eyelids had gotten so heavier that she could now barely open them.
Jack looked back at his desk and replied, "Maybe a while later. I still have some documents to check."
"Can't you just do that tomorrow?" Rachel asked.
He didn't answer for a while. He then reached out to smooth the hair on her forehead and said softly, "I'll go to my room after reading them. Go ahead and sleep first."
Rachel knew that those documents were not urgent. Perhaps Jack couldn't fall asleep, so he would like to read those documents until he fell into a drowse.
But physically, he looked so exhausted now.
She frowned slightly. There was a trace of hesitation in her eyes. Since she and Jack were back together as a real couple, she thought that maybe it would be okay if she took the initiative this time. If she asked him, he might not refuse and would go to bed.
But before she could open her mouth, her face flushed, and her ears felt hot.
She plucked up her courage, took Jack's hand, and whispered, "Come with me to my room."
Her voice was full of shyness.
Jack tried his best to restrain his excitement. He knew what she meant, but he pretended to be dumb. "What for?"
Rachel subconsciously pouted. "If you don't want to, I'll go back to my room now."
She then turned around and was about to leave.
She was certainly not good at things like this.
Jack planned to tease Rachel for a while. But when he saw the strange look on her face, he was suddenly afraid that she would take back her words. So, he quickly closed the door of the study and caught up with her. He put his hand on her shoulder and said, "Rachel, you just don't know how happy I am right now. I feel like I'm on cloud nine."
Rachel couldn't help laughing.
"That's not what you said earlier."
"That's why I'm telling you now." Jack laughed at his own words.
It was a line from the TV drama that Tracy was watching when he visited her two days ago.
At that time, he felt that it was uninteresting and that the person who said that line seemed a little silly. He didn't expect that he would blurt it out in front of Rachel just now.
He felt like he sounded so stupid.
Rachel heard Jack's heavy breathing. Since she was sure that he had fallen asleep, she slowly turned and faced him. His brows were still creased even in his sleep.
She reached out her hand and gently stroked his forehead. A while ago, he said that he wanted to read some documents before going to his room. But not long after his back touched the bed, he fell asleep. Indeed, he was undeniably exhausted.
It was just that he really didn't take his body seriously. He was naturally stubborn. But now, Rachel had proven that what he said earlier wasn't true.
Jack was the kind of man who didn't show any weakness. So, although he felt tired and sleepy, he wouldn't admit it in front of her.
Rachel smiled while staring at his handsome face. In the past, she disliked men who were fond of showing off their abilities in front of others. For her, every man had a weakness. After all, she believed that no man should flaunt their power.
But Jack's bravado had a different impact on her.
It made her realize that not all men just show off. In his case, he showed them that he was brave because he didn't want others to worry about him. He also chose to put all the pressures on his own shoulders to avoid causing burdens to others.
Seeing that his eyebrows were drawn together tightly, Rachel retracted her hand quickly. She was afraid that if she woke him up, he wouldn't be able to fall asleep again. So, she closed her eyes and tried to sleep. After a while, she also fell into a deep slumber.
In the two days that passed, Jack and Rachel didn't talk about the case. But both of them knew that until the investigation was done, anything could happen. It felt like there was a time bomb, and they didn't know when it will explode. One day, Rachel decided to go home early because she had nothing to do in her office anymore. As soon as she came out of the hospital, she saw James rushing over. She thought that there might be something urgent that he needed to deal with, so she didn't bother him. She continued to walk quietly.
However, James suddenly stopped her. "Rachel, wait. I have something to ask you."
She stopped. "Uncle James, are you here for me? I thought you're going to the emergency room."
James shook his head and showed the newspaper in his hand to her. He then asked with a frown, "What is happening? Why is Jack involved in such a group of bad people now?"
Rachel's nerves tensed up upon hearing Jack's name. She took the newspaper from James and looked through the headline. The whole page was news about Jack.
Almost everything about him was mentioned in the news, including Scarlett. Some were real, but most were not.
Worse was, it emphasized the mess that Jack had accidentally got involved in this time.
The content of the news was so persuasive that even the people who initially didn't believe that Jack could do such a thing might eventually be convinced. Since it mentioned a lot of negative things that happened to Jack in the past, it could definitely arouse the readers' interest.
Precisely, the person who wrote this news wanted to destroy Jack deliberately.
Rachel crumpled the newspaper into a ball and tossed it into the trash can nearby. She forced a smile and met James' concerned eyes. "Uncle James, this is just a misunderstanding. Don't worry. Jack is dealing with it right now. He'll definitely handle it well."
