Chapter 49 She's The One That He Wants
At that point, Riley understood that Jeanne didn't want to fire her to protect the hospital's reputation, Jeanne just wanted to get rid of her. What the hell was the reason for Jeanne to treat her like that?
She thought about it at heart for a moment, Riley didn't dare to confront Jeanne with force, she judged the situation and smiled, "Ms. Pouchain, even if you want to fire me, you'll have to get the head of the hospital's approval first, tell me when you've got the document to fire me, I still have things to do so I'll take my leave."
Jeanne snorted, "Dr. Watson, you sound like you're fearless, huh? Why, do you think that someone superior will keep protecting you?"
She was talking about that one time when William defended her from reporters.
Riley smiled, "No, I'm an upright person and that's why I'm not afraid."
Jeanne taunted her, "How could you have the nerve to say such words? Secretly setting yourself against the hospital VIP patient and secretly hooking up with the leader's hospital, you've done such shameless things and you still say that you're not afraid because you're an upright person?! Since you're so confident, I'll give you a chance."
Jeanne said that she walked pass Riley, took the phone on the office desk, then raised her eyebrows and squinted at Riley while dialing, "Save your eloquence and tears, you can use it to improvise in a while."
The call got connected.
"Mr. Houston, it's me, the cardiology department is now in a mess... Yes, the patient demands justification... It's recommended to fire Dr. Watson, otherwise, not only the cardiology department, the whole hospital will be greatly impacted... Okay, I understand." She briefly and powerfully described the impact that Riley caused very well, as if not firing her would be so offensive to the whole hospital.
Jeanne put the phone down, "Dr. Watson, see you at the head of the hospital's office."
After saying that, Jeanne walked out.
Head of the hospital... Riley frowned as she followed her.
After walking out the elevator, they both saw Williams tall figure in his clean white doctor gown out there, there were directors of several departments and Ms. Pouchain behind him. Jeanne smiled in an instant, "Good morning, Mr. Hardesty."
William nodded as he looked at Riley, "Dr. Watson, are you feeling better? Did you sleep well last night?"
A group of people looked at her in unison, they looked calm, but their gazes were all different.
Riley said "oh no" at heart, she already had a bad reputation, with William's words, there'd be more misunderstandings.
"I'm way better now, thank you very much."
Jeanne faintly smiled, "Mr. Hardesty is very busy every day and Dr. Watson is the main force in cardiology, so I will take good care of her."
William didn't look at her at all, he still said, "Dr. Watson, come to me after you finish the paper and communicate with me immediately if you have any question."
Riley bit her lips, "Yes, Mr. Hardesty."
After finally getting out of his pressure, Riley didn't dare to let her guard down, she only hoped that he would not appear with such attitude again.
Jeanne sneered, "As expected, Dr. Watson has tricks, she can even get the attention from a man like Mr. Hardesty, but I'm looking forward to what he'll think if he knows those things you did." Jeanne kept saying words with hidden meanings, which disturbed Riley so much!
William at the elevator entrance was not in a hurry to leave, he turned his head and watched the two figures gradually walk away, entering Mr. Houston's room together.
Only then he got back to his sense," give me the surgery records of neurosurgery department in this month, Mr. Wong, prepare a detailed emergency work manual and hand it to me before weekend."
After instructing, he didn't plan on going downstairs anymore, several directors looked at him, "Mr. Hardesty, the elevator..."
"I still have something to do, just go down first."
The head of the hospital's office.
Hearing Jeanne's words, Mr. Houston's head slightly hurt, he really admired a talent like Riley and he couldn't bear firing her, but the situation was very unfavorable for her to stay.
Seeing that Mr. Houston was hesitating, Jeanne said, "Mr. Houston, the cardiology department is in a mess now, I don't want to be shielding by related personnel as soon as I take the position, and I can't watch the situation getting worse."
Mr. Houston clasped his hands which were covered with age spots, resting on the desk, "Firing a doctor is the second best thing, Jeanne, it won't solve the root of the problem."
Jeanne refuted, "The root of the problem was just things that Dr. Watson did recently... Incidentally, her behavior has caused the patient's suspicion and panic, causing patient's trust in the hospital to drop sharply, you must have seen that the cardiology department is in panic now."
Mr. Houston sighed, looked up at Riley, "Do you have anything you want to explain?"
Mr. Houston was giving her a chance.
Riley bent over politely, "Mr. Houston, I'm very sorry because I have brought such a huge trouble for the hospital and troubled you. However, I did not do anything against the medical ethics, as for the slander, I hope that wise people won't get fooled by rumors." Jeanne attacked her, "Dr. Watson, on the other hand, even if you're innocent and you didn't do it actually, but others got hurt because of you, so shouldn't you be responsible for it?" Fuck!
It was very easy to blame someone when people wanted to frame that person.
William, who was standing outside, couldn't listen to her any longer, he knocked on the door, "Mr. Houston."
Once Mr. Houston saw him coming, he sighed out of relief, "Mr. Hardesty, come in."
William faintly smiled, his face looked elegant and clean, "Just now I happened to hear a bit of Ms. Pouchain's words, I have different opinion regarding Dr. Watson's matter."
Mr. Houston nodded, allowing him to continue.
"If the hospital sacrifices an outstanding doctor because of one unverified rumour, it will inevitably discourage the enthusiasm of the doctor and make them lose their trust for the hospital."
"Furthermore, Ms. Saunders already issued a statement that she accidentally ate food that caused the illness, so, that has nothing to do with Dr. Watson."
"Last one, Ms. Pouchain, your statement just now reminds me of the historic person in China, Yue Fei... Hehe, do you want past tragedy to repeat itself today?"
William made a strong statement that caused Jeanne to be speechless, she was gritting her teeth but she didn't dare to be angry with him, "What do we do now? The cardiology department is already in a huge mess."
William looked at her like he's smiling, but actually he wasn't, "Ms. Pouchain, the cardiology department is a area that you control, you're asking me what to do when something happens? Tell me, what can I do?"
The three of them looked at William at the same time, what he meant was very clear, she's Ms. Pouchain and that was her duty, if she couldn't handle such a small matter, then there's no need for her to be the director. The drama ended, Riley and William's abnormal relationship got more confirmation and extension, her foe relationship with Jeanne also got deeper.
Jeanne's appearance quieten the ward down, she then walked to the VIP ward angrily.
By the time Riley finished her work, it was already lunch time.
When she was going to eat, her phone buzzed..
It was a call from William.
"Dr. Watson, right now, do you still want to refuse to treat me some meal? I just saved your job."
Riley was perturbed, she was bound to be seen by others if she went, and the misunderstanding would become even more uncontrollable. But if she didn't go, William had already helped her multiple times both with public or private matters. "Okay, what about XJ restaurant?"
Eating western food would be too dubious, so she chose Chinese food.
"I'll wait for you."
XJ restaurant was 400-500 meters away from the hospital, Riley changed her clothes and brought her wallet out of the hospital... William was already seated there when she arrived.
There were so many people during lunch time, Riley repeatedly emphasized about the situation, so they moved to the second floor lounge, which had partitions, was by the window, and relatively hidden.
William handed the menu to her, "You're treating me so you should order, I'm only responsible for eating today."
Riley opened the menu without saying anything, she then seriously looked at the vegetables, meat dishes, juices, dessert, and drinks... She saw everything and pondered in seriousness, "What do you like to eat?" William intertwined his hands and put his elbows on the table as he looked at her, when he hung his head, a strand of hair floated on his cheeks, he looked handsome.
"I'm not picky about food, so just anything you like to eat."
"It's very to entertain you, okay then I'll just order randomly."
William opened the plastic cover of her disinfected tableware, after complete set of plates, bowls, and spoons were matched and placed in front of her, he said, "This is not the hospital, you don't need to call me so formally." Riley's slender finger stopped on a picture of braised fish, "Then, Dr. Hardesty, how about the fish"
William smiled, "Seems like there's still a long way until you call me by name."
She didn't respond to that and continued, "What fish do you like? Carp? Hairtail? Crucian?"
"Order what you like."
Riley called the waiter and ordered all the dishes she had chosen at once, the waiter repeated it one more time to confirm, and William listened carefully to the menus she ordered, there were three vegetables, one braised hairtail, one meat dish, plus a West Lake beef soup, she chose sour plum juice that would help digestion for the drink.
Overall, everything had a relatively light taste, which was also in line with his eating habits.
"Dr. Hardesty, I'm treating you to a meal today to thank you for helping me through several difficulties, and I want to say something clearly to you..."
The waiter quickly brought a cold dish and interrupted her.
"What do you want to say to me? You want to say that you're a married woman that has a husband, so you want me to keep my distance from you?" William's words broke through her mind, even if he spoke so directly, but he kept smiling so he was not annoying. "That's right, I just wanted to tell you that."
William poured sour plum juice for her, "You don't need to be so anxious to clear up your relationship with me, you're the one that says upright people won't need to prove themselves, also, liking you is not your trouble."
She sipped the sour plum juice, which was so sour that she frowned, "That means, you are going to continue?"
William shrugged and took a piece of green vegetables, "Why not? You're married, but I'm not... I have the right to pursue the woman that I like, furthermore, I can guarantee that I'll give you happiness, rather than letting you getting trapped in a marriage that is not beautiful, it is better for me to be third wheel to save you."
Riley couldn't help laughing, "Dr. Hardesty, you're really good at making jokes."
She knew that he was very serious, but she must laugh it off.
"I'll prove it to you whether it's a joke or not."
He's holding the chopsticks but he's not in a hurry to use it,
"If I didn't guess it wrong, you will avoid me, go around me, avoid direct contact with me, act cold towards me for a long time. But it's fine, I can accept it, you can keep going with your life, no need to care about my feelings."
He slowly tasted the green vegetables, at that time, all the dishes were served... He looked at the braised hairtail and said, "Hairtail from the East Sea has a more delicate taste than the overseas ones, you're really good at ordering dishes." Riley was just speechless.
William took a pair of clean chopsticks and separated the fish from its bone before giving it to her, "I believe that the world is round, I'll eventually get what belongs to me."☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐
