I didn’t answer.

He kept calling persistently, so I blocked him in frustration. The next day, I couldn’t even enter my workplace.

After repeatedly asking why, they gently suggested, “Sienna, think carefully. Have you

someone?”

I immediately understood.

This was just like when Mrs. Gould had driven my mother and me out of the Gould family years ago. But if he thought this would stop me, he was gravely mistaken! When I got home, Ethan was waiting downstairs.

He looked haggard, his eyes brightening momentarily when he saw me. “Sienna, why won’t answer my calls?”

I laughed mockingly, “Mr. Gould, surely your memory isn’t that poor. You know exactly why.” In front of Ethan, I was used to being accommodating. No matter how much I suffered, no matter how ambiguous his relationship with Mia was, I could endure it because I still loved him then. But looking at him, all I felt was hatred.

now,

Ethan flinched at my words, pain flashing in his eyes. “Sienna, I know I’ve wronged you with what happened to your mother. I understand if you resent and hate me, but please don’t leave me. Give me a chance to make amends.”

“Make amends?”

I glared at him, eyes brimming with tears. “My mother is dead. How can you make amends for that?” Ethan suddenly pulled out a check from his pocket and thrust it into my hand. “Take this check. Fill in any amount you want. Consider it a token of my sincerity.”

I looked at him scornfully. “What are you implying? Do you think money can erase your crimes, ease my pain of losing my mother, make me forgive you? You’re dreaming.‘

Ethan shook his head frantically. “That’s not what I meant. I just want to help you feel better.”

“No! You’re only thinking of yourself. You think if I take your money, this will all be over. You can pretend nothing happened, continue being the young master, living your comfortable life without the burden of guilt.”

“Ethan, don’t even think about it! I want you to live the rest of your life haunted by guilt and unease over my mother’s death. I want you to find no peace even in your dreams.”

I tore the check to pieces in front of him and threw them in his face. “Take your money and get out. I

don’t want it!”
