Chapter THREE
Rosa awoke Tuesday morning, her apprehension lingering from the previous night's encounter, with the golden-eyed gaze peering at her through the bushes. Choosing to stay indoors, she decided to explore every corner of her new home thoroughly. After showering, eating breakfast, and taking her daily medication, she was intent on becoming acquainted with her new surroundings. A few hours later, her exploration left her feeling satisfied with her new home. It was then time to prepare lunch. While eating, Rosa considered venturing beyond her property but ultimately chose not to, instead of visiting the town for additional supplies for the upcoming days. Walking through the town centre after parking her car, she couldn't help but notice the discreet glances she received from passersby. This subtle scrutiny persisted even in the grocery store. Feeling increasingly uneasy, Rosa hastened shopping and headed straight for her car. After loading her groceries into the trunk, she entered the driver's seat and drove away, reflecting on the day's peculiarities. Unbeknownst to her, she had caused quite a stir in the store. Once home, Rosa brought in her groceries, unpacked them, and put everything away.
Looking at the clock, Rosa realized it was later than she had expected; dinner time was near. She opted for classic meat and three veg and gravy as her meal. Half an hour later, Rosa sat down at the table to eat. After finishing her meal, she cleaned up by washing the dishes and tidying the kitchen. Having completed her household tasks, Rosa settled onto the couch to delve into her book. Deeply engrossed in her reading, she pondered the day's happenings in town. Rosa placed a bookmark on her current page and got ready for bed, which included making a warm cup of hot chocolate. She savoured her drink and snuggled under the covers, feeling a sense of comfort. Thinking about her plans for tomorrow, Rosa decided to explore the edges of her property and take precautions against any wildlife that someone like her could discover. With her plans in place for tomorrow, she fell asleep, her mind filled with anticipation for the day ahead.
As dawn broke on Wednesday, Rosa stirred and began her daily preparations. Determined to venture beyond her property's boundaries, she reminded herself to carry her journal after packing all the essentials and picking up the backpack she had found when moving in. The backpack held vital items such as water bottles and food, including energy bars, for lasting vitality. She also included various broad, coloured ribbons to mark tree trunks, ensuring a safe return path.
Before setting out, Rosa consulted the weather forecast, which indicated a pleasant day ahead with a mild cool breeze in the mid-twenties. Once ready, she stepped out the back door and explored the woods, focusing on the yellow ribbons, marking every fifth tree with a ribbon, and followed a trail toward the river. The path was wide enough for several travellers, prompting Rosa to pace as marking her route to the riverbank. "Wow!" she exclaimed upon arrival. Choosing a large rock as a resting spot, she took a break and enjoyed her bottled water while enjoying the stunning riverside scenery.
The river wound gently, its waters trickling and flowing smoothly around the bend. Sunlight drenched the riverbank, reflecting off the surface as it had off the moon on her inaugural night there. Trees swayed softly in the breeze while Rosa watched for wildlife. She relished a few hours by the river before heading home, harbouring an unsettling sense of being followed. Rosa returned home cautiously, mulling over plans for tomorrow after today's escapade. Resolving to venture out again, she chose a different coloured ribbon for distinction. Despite feeling exhausted upon her return, Rosa experienced a thrill from the day's events, even with the eerie sensation of being observed.
Upon arriving home, Rosa realized it was nearly time for dinner. She quickly took a shower to cleanse herself of the day's dirt and changed into her comfortable clothes, which doubled as pyjamas. After whipping a simple meal, Rosa fetched her journal and wrote: "The path marked with yellow ribbons leads to the river." Satisfied with her note, she looked forward to the next day with great anticipation. After finishing her meal and tidying up, she succumbed to fatigue after returning home. Forgoing her usual reading, Rosa went directly to bed. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she finally drifted into a deep and peaceful sleep—the first since her arrival—free from dreams.
Without her knowledge, wolves followed and watched over her, ensuring her safety as she slept. They would continue this protective watch until Luca was formally introduced to her, an event that could happen soon if the Moon Goddess desires it. Unbeknownst to the wolves, Rosa harboured a secret; she was already aware of their presence due to her sixth sense.
