Chapter 26
"Have you told her about the other one yet?"
Kane sighed, running a hand over his face before looking over to lock eyes on Jason. The man cocked an eyebrow before blowing out a breath and shaking his head.
"That's gonna be a hell of a reckoning."
The twins had been talking in a corner, their conversation dying suddenly at Jason's words. Osiris looked to Kane, clearly weighing the benefits of saying what was on his mind. Benny nudged his brother with a shoulder.
"Uh...you know if you want I could. I mean Benny and I could break the news to her."
Kane's grin was devilish, his blue eyes flashing black.
"I would hate to lose two of my men in one day. No, I'll inform Dawn. For now you guys just worry about watching the borders."
Benny nodded, mumbling something to Osiris as he brushed past his twin to head out. Osiris was clearly irritated by the whispered comment, heading toward his brother as if to start a brawl.
"You got something smart to say to me?"
Benny laughed, shaking his head.
"Come on kitty cat."
Osiris's whole face grew red with anger.
"You...you bastard. I oughta even out your eyes, give you another black one."
Benny didn't even look back, just threw up his hand to flip his twin the bird. Jason sighed, shaking his head.
"Those two don't act a day over twelve, the little twerps."
With that he followed them out, leaving Kane alone in his home to think over what he had to do next. It was like a never ending list of shit he didn't want to do.
Honestly he figured this would be her wrecking ball, and after his latest failure he feared hurting her again. What if she couldn't handle the news? Her hormones were already wacked out and she was flying from crying to happy like a bird on the wrong seed. He didn't want this to hurt her or the baby, and with her past it wasn't going to be simple news.
The front door opened quietly, and her scent wrapped around him. She always smelled so good, but even desire couldn't pull him out of his thoughts.
"Kane."
Her voice, so soft and sweet, dragged him out of his daze. Her hand wrapped around his as she guided him over to the couch. He felt tired and weary, his body gladly resting on the soft material. She didn't waste any time straddling his waist in order to see him eye to eye. She was so small compared to him, but who wasn't?
Her gentle touch graced his jaw as she kissed him lightly. When she felt his mind calm a bit she sat back and spoke her piece.
"I know you kept one of the intruders."
Those words had him sitting up tall, anger raging in those blue eyes. She leaned in, resting her forehead against his own.
"Kane, calm down my lover."
His hands moved to trail into her hair, her face moving back enough for him to see her sparkling green gaze. Why was she so calm? If she knew of the stranger in their midst, someone from her past, wouldn't she be scared? Why was she acting as if it was no big deal? More so, who the fuck told her?
"I smelled the other two the night I...ended Lucian's life. The grey wolf. I knew they were close and I know who they are. I've smelled him on you, when you come home at night. I figured the only way to continue holding his scent is if you were seeing him each day. So...it was pretty simple to solve the mystery."
He raised an eyebrow, still confused.
"You aren't worried?"
The smile that graced her lips was sad, her hand moving to rest against the side of his neck.
"I worry for your safety. If he gets loose, I worry he will come for me. Then I think of you, how strong you are, and what you said to me."
Her lips touched his, her whisper soft.
"You won't let him hurt me."
His irises faded into their onyx depths, her eyes silver as she sensed the wolf inside her mate. He wanted out, to be with her as beasts in that moment.
"I know who he is, and though I wasn't going to say anything I need you to know the truth."
Kane was focused fully on her, his heart picking up its pace. What would he do after knowing the truth of the enemy wolf? What if he had been one of the ones who hurt Dawn? What if he had...
"His name is Judas, and you can calm your racing mind. He never touched me, at least not like the others."
His glower remained like stone upon his face. She looked down then, placing a hand against his chest to rest over his heart.
"Judas never laid with any of the girls, because he can't. He isn't complete downstairs."
Kane's eyebrows shot up, clearly not seeing that development coming. So the guy was missing his dick? Seriously?
"Kane, don't take him as less of a threat. Judas was castrated because he betrayed his first pack. He killed his own mate in order to join his current pack. He's insane, a monster. He didn't rape the girls, but he took great pleasure in hurting us."
She left his lap, unable to look him in the eyes. With her back to him she remembered the times she had tried to run. It was a dark memory to immerse herself in, but it was where Judas lived within her mind.
"Every time I escaped he was the one to bring me back. He was cruel, and by the time he was done with me he had to drag me back to camp. The look in his eyes was always so dark. It's like he's not human at all."
Kane understood what she spoke of. In his life he had come up against men and women alike who had the same look she described. They had been broken, their souls black and their beasts bloodthirsty. He had tried so many times to save them, pull them back to their humanity. It was useless. Once they were gone there was no saving them. No redemption.
