Chapter 7
Monty was at a loss, this “case” he was on has gotten under his skin, like no other before it. In his extensive research he has come up with many plausible mythological creatures and legends he could attribute to and blame as the source of all of Frank Sullivan’s worries and concerns regarding what he feels he let out of that old chest in his basement. It would be easy for him to create some sort of mumbo-jumbo exorcist ceremony, declare he has chased all the evil away, take the money from the Sullivan’s and move on to the next job. Exactly the way he has handled this sort of thing, all previously.
But something has happened. Something that is new to him. This does not feel right. He does not believe all this Mythology rubbish, he never has, and he thought he never would. But he himself has felt the presence of whatever was in that chest himself. The strange dreams, with that annoying Leprechaun, O’Hara and Gloria Sullivan always present.
His whole life has been completely turned upside down. For most of his life, believing that there is nothing other than bullshit in all this mythology stuff, he may be beginning to think that there might be more to it all. Bad enough to the skeptical non believing Monty O’Hara, this new-found open mindedness, has done to him, more shattering to his normal life and his view on the world around him is the effect a Gloria Sullivan is having on his entire being.
Gloria Sullivan has gotten well into his soul. All those dreams he has been having, with Gloria and O’Hara, the Leprechaun have taken over a part of his mind. In these dreams, she is always holding his hand, O’Hara is always pushing them together, it is always only she, he saves from the monsters all around them.
The worst part though, is when he is awake, and she is with him. He feels drawn towards her, he feels he has to keep her safe, protect her from the terrible things in this world.
From a good business point of view, he has done all that he has been required to do, by Gloria Sullivan. She herself does not believe in faeries, goblins, pixies, banshees leprechauns or any other mythological creature, so all has to do, is exactly what she asked of him, at that first meeting. All he needs to do, convince Frank that he was worked out what it is, then put on a good show of making it all go away, collect his fee and then be off on his merry way.
Taking anything from Gloria, especially when he has not truly solved anything, goes against these feelings of protecting her, keeping her safe. He just could not do such a thing.
Monty is sitting in his own little corner in the Brooklyn College’s Academic Library. He has felt at home here. His old friend Hank and other members of the faculty have made him feel accepted, nothing like the aristocratic snobs that seem to infect all the major academic institutions back in the old country. Even the company of the Montague O’Hara Paranormal Detective groupies, he has enjoyed.
Getting back to the problem in hand, the Sullivan chest. He had heard back from Mira Watson and her team of nerds, so far after an extensive search they have found no stories of the Irish zombie, or Fear Gortas outside of Ireland. Monty has now tasked his little group of helpers with researching for stories of some other, unique to Ireland mythical creatures have appeared anywhere outside of Ireland as well.
He has asked them to be thorough, some folklore mythical beasts and characters may, at first appear similar, but the proper Irish ones are all quite unique.
His guess at the moment, is that neither him nor the nerd team will find anything, and the start of a theory concerning these Irish mythical creatures. These creatures can only exist on Irish soil.
The skeptical person that he is, none of this means that he believes any of this mythical bullshit. It just means if this sort of bullshit actually was real, he has a theory on why it is all happening to Frank and Gloria Sullivan and also to him.
The chest was brought over from the old country. They were like all the others leaving Ireland at that time, in ships often called “coffin ships” because of the many who started out on the journey, not all made it alive, the Sullivan family lost two, one old and one young. In some families all were lost.
The Sullivan family, in their hearts realized it was most unlikely that they would ever feel the earth of their homeland under their feet, ever again. In that chest the Sullivan brought with them a bit of Ireland, a few rocks, from the part of Ireland they came from;
These few rocks were the bit of Ireland, these mythical creatures need to manifest themselves over here. The chest had sat for many years undisturbed down in the Sullivan basement. Frank opening that chest, set all this, that the three of them are now experiencing, in motion. He must go and see Frank and find out if he has been experiencing anything similar to what he has.
When he catches up with Gloria and asks her the same questions, that will be the interesting one. She started out a firm non-believer just as he was a week ago. If Gloria admits to undergoing the same sort of things as he has, it is all going to put all that he has believed for a long time now, under some serious pressure.
Monty has sorted out a meeting with Frank Sullivan. They are both now sitting quietly in a corner of Frank’s office, Monty asks him the first question.
“Frank, by any chance have you been experiencing weird and vivid dreams?”
Frank’s answer, after a short delay was a simple, “yes”
Then Monty asked him if he would care to elaborate a bit, and after another short delay.
“When I first opened the chest, all of my dreams were about Gloria, how worried I was about her future and her future happiness. These seemed so real, like it was all actually happening. One strange thing though, there was always this leprechaun sitting quietly off to one side.”
“What about the dreams you are experiencing now?” was the next thing Monty asked Frank.
The delay was longer, this time. “I don’t know if I should tell you. You will think I have completely lost all my marbles if I tell you how much weirder these dreams are now.”
With a bit of coaxing and a promises to not tell any other living soul, Monty managed to talk Frank to continue telling about these new and weirder dreams.
Now Frank finds that he does not directly partake in these dreams. He is off to one side, just watching. The leprechaun is still present, but he now has a name, O’Hara.
“The Leprechaun O’Hara claims to be your father, Monty.” Frank informs him.
“In all of these dreams both you and Gloria feature. Gloria is attacked by a wide variety of monsters and mythical creatures. It is always you, Monty that rescues her and keeps her safe. The last one got quite steamy at the end, with Gloria rushing over, wrapping her arms around you. Placing a passionate kiss, then I awoke.”
Monty how could all this be so. This mythology crap is all just bullshit. Going through his mind, has Gloria been experiencing something along the same lines. If she has, will she want to tell me?
