Monague O'Hara Paranormal Detective

Chapter 16

Monty having now just having for the first time in his life, as Montague O’Hara, the Paranormal Detective, has actually solved a case of a paranormal nature. Deep down inside he still is not completely sure he believes any of this mystical crap. But he is as proud as hell at his success. This is an even better feeling than pulling off a successful con.

Since resolving exactly what was going on, with the Sullivan family he had one more dream. This was only a short dream, no fighting off a variety of monsters to keep Gloria safe. It was all a quite subdued affair, just him and the Leprechaun O’Hara.

“Son, you may not believe it yet, but I really am your Da. That time, years ago, That I spent with your Ma, was magical. She was this wild and wonderful free spirit, I was really smitten by her. But the crossing of the two worlds, it could just never be. You are half a leprechaun, but as you exist in your world your magic powers can never be.”

He then went on, to not be so despondent, a part of his life was all going to unexpectedly just come together.

The last thing the Leprechaun said to him, just before fading away and Monty waking up.

“A leprechaun, son, always keeps the thing he treasures most, at the end of a rainbow.”

This did not make any sense to Monty, he knows rainbows are just the different wavelengths of visible light, refracted by small drops of rain. They have no actual beginning or end. They are an optical illusion. The perceived visible beginning or end moves around relative to the viewer.

It was a somewhat surprised Monty, who when turning up at Hank’s office, to thank him for all his help, and to inform him he would be later in the week be going back across the pond. He did not really want to, but this seems to be the only option open to me at present.

Hank, always one to keep a poker face, not often being caught with what was actually going on inside plastered all over his face. Inwardly he was grinning from ear to ear. He was about to pass on a message that was going to make his day.

Hank knowing Monty his old friend well had worked out that this Gloria Sullivan has pushed her way under his tough outer layers and has just started to light a small warming flame deep within his soul. Monty would like to stick around a bit to see where this unfamiliar emotion may take him. She was a successful lawyer and the daughter of a successful local billionaire businessman. Him, just a half Irish gypsy trickster, or if you believed his mother half leprechaun, it did not matter either way. Someone like him who lived life, totally flying by the seat of his pants would not be an option for Gloria Sullivan.

Back to the welcome surprise that Hank was going to hit Monty with.

“Don’t go just yet Monty. I have been instructed by the management to not let you leave until they have had a chance to have a chat with you.”

After a moments silence, Hank continued on. “Through the grape vine I have heard they are going to make you an offer, you would need to be a complete idiot not to consider. I will just ring and let them know we are on the way.”

Dr William Jefferson was patiently waiting for a phone call. Dr O’Hara was expected to come in today to see his friend, Hank Jackson. A whole new program, along with a generous cash donation from the benefactor who wanted this program, was at stake here. The benefactor had placed only one condition on the donation happening. A Dr Montague O’Hara was to be taken onto the staff of Brooklyn College to head up this program. This donation was quite a sizable amount. He did not wish to miss out on this opportunity. He had read the thesis that had been produced by this Dr O’Hara. Within this particular field he would be one of the best around. Dr O’Hara on the staff here at Brooklyn College would only add to the prestige of the place. All at minimal real cost too.

William Jefferson has just hung up his phone after receiving the call he has been waiting for. That’s the first bit sorted. He’s coming, so I can make him an offer that I hope he will find to his satisfaction.

Hank and Monty arrived at Dr Jefferson’s office. His receptionist sent them both straight in.

“Go right on in. Dr Jefferson is expecting you both.” Were her words, as they approached her desk.

Hank and Monty entered Dr Jefferson’s office. Dr Jefferson seated at his desk, began to speak.

“Come on in, take a seat. I’m pleased I managed to catch you Dr O’Hara before you went off back home. I wish to make you an offer of a new position here at the college in a new department a generous benefactor has agreed to substantially fund.”

Dr Jefferson then outlined a proposal for Monty to consider. A generous local successful businessman has made a donation towards a new department that the college, though interested in including this sort of faculty in the past, has been considered, the funding was not available. Thanks to this large donation, along with some ongoing finance, this is now a viable option, for the college. This new department will be to provide research and courses in European Mythology. Dr Jefferson pointed out, that since the Lord of the Rings, movies and with the Harry Potter craze, a faculty, and courses along these lines could prove popular.

Then Dr Jefferson went on to explain having discovered an expert, well qualified in the field of European Mythology temporarily in town, just the sort of person that could fill this position, it would be foolish of him not to offer Monty the job.

“Go away and give my offer some thought. If you are interested, we will talk further. If you accept this offer, and we can negotiate a package that suits us both, you can consider this position as good as yours, if you accept it, and we will not bother to look for anyone else.” was Dr Jefferson’s concluding statement.

Monty had made his decision rather quickly. This was an opportunity way too good to pass up. He knew his answer would have to be a yes, well before Dr Jefferson had finished pitching it all to him. He managed to put on a good act though, pretended to not be all that excited over this unexpected opportunity.

“I will need to think about your offer, Dr, Jefferson. I would like to take up a position like this, but as I have a few other commitments, back in the old country, I will need to sort these out first, before I can give you an answer, one way or the other. I should need around a week before I can give you that answer.” was Monty’s reply.

Monty lasted five days before he formally accepted the best offer of his career. Finally, he had an academic position worthy of his education achievements. Monty organized a time that suited him and both him and Dr Jefferson, to come in to sort out the details, salary and the other details. Monty was not overly concerned over how much this salary would be.

After receiving the phone call from Dr O’Hara, accepting the position, a pleased Dr Jefferson made another phone call.

“Dr O’Hara has accepted the job. So I will come and see you and sort out the details of your generous donation.”

The person on the other end of the telephone call was most pleased.
