Chapter 13
Monty had arrived at Frank’s office. Ready for the scheduled meeting. On his arrival, Frank’s PA had sent him straight in.
“Go on through, Mr O’Hara. Mr Sullivan is expecting you.” Were her words, when he arrived at her desk, just outside of the door through to Frank’s office.
Opening the door and walking into Frank’s office, he found that Gloria had arrived before him. As he entered, she looked up at him. The moment that they both made eye contact, they both blushed. This did not go unnoticed by Frank.
The three of them, then quickly got down to business. Monty then set about informing them, of the details concerning the ritual, to put everything back into the old chest. It was soon decided it would be over the weekend, in a few days time that they would go through the basic ritual, Monty had devised.
At the end of the meeting Monty stressed the importance of belief. This may all be new, and a lot to take in, but for any of it to work, belief was a major component.
“See you all on Saturday.” Monty’s final words as he left Frank’s office.
As Monty walked back to his hotel, only one thing filled his mind. This was Gloria Sullivan. Falling in love with anyone, was not part of his plan for life. Falling in love with a woman that scares him as much as Gloria Sullivan just made it all worse. Her family being wealthy, in the past may have been a thing that would attract him, but in the case of Gloria this was no help. This was different. This was all the insanity of falling madly in love.
His previous experience of rich women had all been based around a possible opportunity for bit of financial gain. No emotions involved other than the joy from a good con. Conning Gloria and Frank, just did not sit right with him.
Monty has decided this trip will turn out to be a bit of a financial loss. He will not be sending the Sullivan’s any sort of account for his services. His fee, would be the traditional Gypsy one. If all this was not the complete bullshit, that just a few weeks ago, he thought it all was, whatever treasures and valuables, placed into the chest, by Frank and Gloria Sullivan, should, later turn up somehow, in his possession.
It was Friday night again. That night, one week from the last time, Gloria finds her self in another vivid dream. Again she is at the table, with the marked off pink candle. Gloria lights this candle. The candle was as she had left it last Friday, with the top section burnt down to the first section string marker. Gloria lit the candle and started the same ritual stopping when the candle reached the second string marker. Gloria then snuffed out the flame, in the manner prescribed by the Gypsy woman Lavinia in the first candle dream.
Gloria then awakened from this dream. Why was all this happening ?. She had no place in her life for any love or romance. A scoundrel, such as Montague O’Hara could only bring heartbreak, and disappointment.
Tomorrow the three of them would perform the ritual to restore the old chest back to its purpose. Shortly after that, once she settled up the account for his services, she expected Monty would make a hasty retreat, and disappear from her life forever.
Once this happens, she will be able to go back to her normal life. Back to being the brightest, toughest, and most feared young lawyer about town. This should be making her feel content, but it wasn’t. The thought of not having Monty around anymore was making her feel sad and empty.
For, the Friday evening, before the ritual, Monty had a social engagement. He had been invited around to Hank and Michelle Jackson’s home to meet the family. The name Michelle, had brought up a face from the time when Monty and Hank were wild grad students at Oxford University, grad students, and drinking buddies. There had been a quiet, serious, and studious young woman, Michelle Carmichael, that could not stand being in the presence of both of them. She had been the butt of many of their stupid immature pranks. They had singled her out to be someone to annoy, as the reaction they got out of her was half the fun. Monty remembering some of this, thought, what twat him and Hank could sometimes be, back then. It was hardly likely that Michelle would end up married to Hank. If Michelle Carmichael, ever ran into either of them in the street, she would cross over to the other side, and hastily remove herself from their presence.
Arriving at the address, Hank had given him, Monty rang the doorbell. About thirty seconds later, the door opens and standing there to greet him is the last person he had expected to find. Hank has married, Michelle Carmichael.
In her broad Highland Scots accent, another thing that they had made fun of back then, Michelle greeted Monty.
“Good evening Monty. It is wonderful to see you again.”
Then after the short delay, due to the shock of this particular Michelle, being the one opening the door. Monty O’Hara well known for his silver tongue, quick wit, and Irish charm. In this shocked state, the best he could come up with, was a rather ordinary and boring.
“Why thank you, Michelle. It is wonderful to see you again also.”
The Hank that Monty spent that pleasant Friday evening with, was much more mature and sensible Hank. Hank is no longer just a big stupid kid. He has grown up. Instead of life being focused only on having a good time, never taking anything too seriously, his wife and family are now the center of his universe.
It seems, around six months after finishing his studies at Oxford, and returning to his position at Brooklyn College Library, Michelle Carmichael arrived to take up a position she had just been employed to fill. It seems, Hank, the big kid, could not resist pulling one of his silly pranks on her. In this new environment, and without his old partner in crime, Monty, to back him up, it all went down like a lead ballon. She walked right up to Hank, and standing almost toe to toe, she let him know what she thought of him and all his nonsense. This was all delivered to Hank in the language of the best Glaswegian dockworker. There was a hearty round of congratulations and applause from other members of the Brooklyn College staff, that were in the vicinity. It seemed not many of his co-workers had been impressed, by his childish behavior.
It was at this moment Hank realized he was in love with Michelle. He probably had been for quite some time. The silly pranks had just been his dumb way of trying to get her attention.
