Moments of Malevolence (The Hunters Book 1)

Moments of Malevolence: Chapter 26

“I WILL KICK you in the balls if you do not tell me where he is.” I glare at Kyson, who’s holding his hand out for his phone. I press call again, but Zuko doesn’t answer. Asshole. Of course he doesn’t answer. “I have a good aim,” I warn.

“Not happening.” He tries to take his phone again, but as I end the call, I check it and smile as I navigate to the Find My iPhone function. They wouldn’t have it on, surely? But then, just as I see Zuko’s name pop up and the street he is on, I know they do. I throw Kyson’s phone at him and head to the door, reaching for my keys as Kyson reaches me. I push past him and out the door.

“I will carry your ass back through that door. Don’t you fucking make me,” he threatens.

“How mad at you do you think he will get if he hears you hurt me?”

“You can’t track him. You only saw a street, so how will you narrow it down?” He smiles as if he’s got me.

“I’m not going there. I’m going somewhere else.”

I stroll to my car, and he follows. Kyson holds open the passenger door for me to get in, and as soon as the door is closed, I lock it and climb over to the other side, grunting as I hurt my stomach. I start the car as Kyson leans down to my window and shakes his head. He doesn’t have the spare keys on him—I saw them on the table when we walked out. He pats his pockets as if he realizes this as well and then bangs on my window.

Ha! Yeah, that’s not going to happen.

I press call from my phone to Zuko’s, but not from my private phone number, from Sage’s. He answers, and I hear noises in the background.

“You’re calling me,” he states.

“I had missed calls from you,” I say sweetly.

“I’m kind of busy. This isn’t the time for a call from you.”

“But I have something interesting to share with you.” I hear a thud before it gets quieter.

“And what is that?” he asks.

“I want to show you what I look like.”

“You do?” he asks, surprised. Then he adds, “Look, I have to tell you something.”

“What is it?” My voice is way too sweet for how I’m feeling right now.

“I’m with someone else.”

“Oh, you are?” I say, disappointment evident in my tone. “In a relationship or just fucking?” I push for more details.

“Well…” He goes quiet for a few seconds, obviously thinking about what he wants to say next. “I want to strangle her half the time, fuck her most of the time, and make sure she is okay all of the time.” I can just imagine his hands running through his hair right now.

“I should let you go,” I say softly. “Since you don’t want or need me anymore, I should let you go.”

“Sage…”

“Yes?”

“If I had met you first—” I hang up as I pull up to the bar. It’s not open until later, but I know Jeff will be here. He’s always here.

Pushing open the door at the back, I go straight to his office. I come to a complete stop when I see what’s happening right in front of me. Louise is there, on her knees, in front of Jeff.

Fuck, Jeff gets around.

Lucky bastard.

“Um…”

Both of them freeze for a split second.

Then Louise hits her head on his desk as she goes to get up. When she spots me, her eyes go wide, and she stands, pulling down her skirt.

“Alaska, what are you doing here?” she asks.

“Um… What are you doing here?” I question back.

She looks at Jeff, who is tucking his cock back into his pants, and then back to me.

“I…” She shakes her head. “I don’t have an explanation.” She shrugs.

“I thought you were with Sarah,” I ask Jeff, and his face scrunches.

“Aren’t you meant to be on bed rest?” He points to my stomach. “If you can work—”

“She can’t work. Her stomach was cut open, you fool,” Louise says, cutting him off. “Anyway. Clearly, this was a lapse in judgment. He gave me great head, so I returned the favor.”

“Still no reason to be sucking his cock.”

I shiver at that thought.

It’s just wrong on all levels.

Jeff is sleazy.

Louise tucks her hair behind her ear and steps away from him, and his eyes track her movements. “Where are you going?” he says, but she ignores him and comes over to me.

“Are you okay? Why are you here?”

I look past her to Jeff.

“I need Sarah’s address,” I tell him.

He throws his head back and laughs. “That’s a joke and never happening.”

“Why? Are you still fucking her too?”

“Of course I am. She plans to move in with me.”

From the corner of my eye, I see Louise shake her head.

“You just told me you were broken up,” she accuses.

“Well, we are. But not.” He scowls. “She would still be here if it weren’t for you,” Jeff says, blaming me for Sarah’s current situation.

Louise reaches for me. “Let’s go. I quit!” she yells.

“Her address?” I demand.

“Not happening.”

“I quit too,” I announce, turning and walking out.

He starts yelling, but neither of us pays any attention.

As we step outside, Kyson’s leaning against my car.

“Fuck!” I grumble.

He stares us down as we approach.

“I need you to do me a favor,” I tell her.

“What?”

“Distract him.” I discreetly point to Kyson.

“How?”

“I don’t care. And give me the keys to your car.” She hands them to me, and I give her mine. I watch as she saunters up to him, but he pays no attention to her. As soon as Louise is in front of him, she tries blocking his view, but his eyes never stray from me. She glances back at me as I near her car, which is parked a few spots in front of mine.

Shrugging, she turns back to him and lifts her skirt. I see her ass in plain view, and his eyes fall to what’s below—she isn’t wearing panties, and Kyson notices. I want to laugh, but instead, I climb into her car and start it. When I look up, I see him stalking my way, so I quickly pull out and take off, flipping him off. And as I speed by, he yells something at me. When I check the rearview mirror, I see Louise laughing as he passes her on his way to his car.

Putting my focus back on the road, I know what will get Zuko’s attention.

And he may not like it.

But fuck him.

He chose not to listen to me, and payback is always a bitch.

And that bitch is me.
