Chapter 10

One of the young female police officers seemed to be angered by their attitude and rolled her eyes, saying, “Are you Violet’s parents? Really? Seems you’re looking forward to seeing her get into trouble. She’s not in trouble. She’s dead. Come with us to identify the body.”

My mom stood in situ in a daze. After a long while, she finally forced a smile.

“Today is a joyous day for my daughter’s celebration. What are you talking about? How come Violet is dead? You must have made a mistake.”

The female police officer rolled her eyes again. “I’m a cop. And you question me? Do you have any legal knowledge at all?

“Violet’s body was found in the mountains. It is preliminarily determined that she has been dead for more than ten days, and she didn’t die in a natural way. We need you to come back with us now and help us find the killer.”

My mom’s smile froze.

Even her movements became somewhat stiff.

I looked up.

The flickering light fell on her face, shone on the fine lines at the corners of her eyes, and landed in her eyes that despised me.

She still found it hard to believe.

“No… No way. How could that jinx be dead? And you’re here to tell us now? On such a good occasion?”

The policewoman was even more furious. “Are you a mother or what? She’s lying on a cold dissecting table, and instead of crying, you’re actually calling her a jinx?”
