Chapter 11 Road Trip Stories
It took us nearly three freakin’ days to finally make it down those blasted mountains! And then we didn’t have a car, so we had to call a rent-a-car… I still think we shoulda ordered a helicopter! Anyway, after a looong night's sleep, Nate and I work up before the freakin’ crack-o’-dawn to make up for our lost time.
I let Nate drive… I know… I’ve been slacking, but the dude is unstoppable and has more than enough motivation to get us wherever we are going fast.
Speaking of… I actually have no clue where we are going next.
“Hey, man, where is it we are going, by the way?” I finally asked.
“Oh! I totally forgot to tell you,” he laughed. “We’re actually heading for the Grand Canyon in Arizona.”
“Dude, that’s so awesome! I’ve always wanted to go on vacation there…. But my family, besides being stinkin’ rich, didn’t like camping! Or maybe “mom and dad” were just spoiled or something. But my family never did anything cool,” I grumbled.
Then I had a thought.
“What did you do with your family?” I asked.
Nate let out a sigh and the corner of his mouth twitched. He looked happy for a second and I let him remember whatever it was that made him smile like that. I didn’t mean to pry, I was just really curious.
“Well, when I wasn’t busy training, and my parents had time off, we would go to the coast and watch the waves. We would explore caverns and caves. Sometimes we would go into the mountains. I personally like the Olympics, their trees are beautiful… But this was over a hundred years ago when all the electronics didn’t exist, traffic was more horse and buggy than cars. People went out in nature to spend time with their families and feel reconnected with Mother Earth,” he whispered.
“Where is your family?” I asked.
He sighed heavily.
“I honestly don’t know. I know they would have protected your parents to the death, and I have a feeling that is what happened. I had a little sister, Sasha, and a younger brother Antony. He was also training to become a warrior, under my father. Sasha, on the other hand, spent most her her time in the gardens helping the flowers grow. She had a special gift, just a single touch could cause a dead bush to flourish and blossom instantly,” he sounded proud of his siblings.
“I wish I could meet them,” I replied.
“I wish you could too. And maybe, if they are still alive, when we find them, they can come back with us and meet Melissa and Becky too,” he said hopefully.
“That would be so awesome! New siblings!” I cheered.
I would love to meet Nate’s family! If they were anything like him, I had a feeling we would get along like one big crazy family… And I think it would be good for Nate and Lissa, too.
She will need all the support she can get once she has this baby. She is literally just 18, and while she has matured in the last month, she still has her sass, but now it’s more grouchy with her recent mood changes.
I can’t believe I hadn’t seen it before, actually. I saw her mood swings and saw her getting sick at the smell of coffee, which was weird for her. Now it completely makes sense! Hopefully she will be out of the mood swings by the time we come home???
I guess I shouldn’t get my hopes up.
“Hey, Nate. Can you explain to me how Lissa’s pregnancy works?” I asked.
He glanced at me warily.
I laughed out loud!
“I don’t need the “birds and the bees” talk, man! I am asking about what she is gonna go through,” I chuckled.
He let out a relieved sigh.
“Okay, I wasn’t sure what you were talking about,” he chuckled to himself. “So, I guess it starts out like a normal human pregnancy with the morning sickness and stuff. But at the same time, she would be sharing my magic, and I wouldn’t even notice it.”
“Explain how that works.”
I was curious because someday I was hoping to go through the same things with Becky… Only there is no way in HELL I’d leave her all alone! Not that we can blame Nate! I don’t! But I will make sure my circumstances are much better than my sisters!
Nate’s face redded immediately.
He cleared his throat.
“Well, when you are intimate, there is a transfer of magic, kinda like a battery being recharged. Only it needs to be recharged constantly, because the baby will take all the power for itself, because it needs it to grow three times faster than a human baby,” he explained.
Wow!
“So, you and my sister…” I couldn’t even finish my thought! YUCK! I mean… I’ve known, it's just something I really don’t want to think about!
If I was thinking about Becky that way, I actually have no problem with it… But we have to wait!
“Okay, so why do babies grow so fast?”
This was a weird topic, but I figured I might as well ask.
“Actually, we are not entirely sure, but it was rumored that an extended pregnancy would wear the mother out the longer the baby stayed in the womb. So the theory is, the mothers would die if the baby was not born sooner, rather than later… And I don’t plan on testing the theory! I just want to finish this mission and help Mel with the rest of her pregnancy,” he choked out.
Poor guy!
It wasn’t just Lissa’s emotions that have been messed up, now that I think about it. Nate’s been up and down too.
“Don’t worry, we’ll finish as soon as possible… Even if it means me renting an airplane or a helicopter!” I insisted.
“Can you fly a helicopter?” he asked, intrigued.
“No, but I totally wish I could!” I smiled.
Hmm… That’s an idea! After I get my medical license, I can get my helicopter’s license! That would be awesome! I’m a fairy after all! Who said fairies had to fly with wings? My way is gonna be way cooler.
“Well, I do think we will have to at least get plane tickets after this one, because the next trip looks like we are going to Oklahoma,” he mentioned.
“Oklahoma?!? What the heck is way out there?” I asked incredulously.
“Besides dome number 5? Not a whole heck of a lot!” Nate answered.
“That’s what I was afraid of…” I sighed.
