Midnight Mistletoe

Chapter Apologies

Derek Sawyer

After the day I had, maybe I should have brought Freckles with me. With her help, the shopping would have been so much easier to do. I wanted to escape from here as I was too stubborn to want Kate’s help.

It took me all day to get the groceries and to buy Christmas presents. There were a lot of people in the stores.

I should have followed my mother’s advice and not bought them at the last minute.

Everyone has likely gone to bed by now

“Do you need any help?”

Not everyone it would seem.

Kate’s sudden voice startled me, and I nearly screamed since I wasn’t anticipating anyone behind me.

I put my hand on my sternum. “Freckles, you almost gave me a heart attack. Next time, announce yourself.”

She let out a chuckle.

Turning around to face her. “You found this funny?”

“Yes!” Kate covers her mouth with her hand to muffle her laughs.

I shake my head, letting out a snort. “I’m glad I amuse you, freckles.”

I head towards the back of the car to open the trunk.

Katherine follows. She quickly grabs two bags before I can offer her the lighter ones.

Just as I was about to say something to her, she beat me to it. “I’m a big girl. I don’t need you to hold my hand.”

My lips twitch.

It appears she grasped my intention of not wanting her to lift something heavy.

“Lead the way then, freckles. Careful because not too long ago, you would have fallen flat on your beautiful tight ass if it wasn’t for me.” I remind her.

Kate’s lips part in surprise.

It’s possible that her reaction was due to my remark about her ass.

“What a guy thing to say.” Her face turns red before she walks toward her parent’s house.

I frown.

What’s up with her?

I have two options here.

First, she didn’t appreciate the comment I made about her ass and was too polite to say anything or two, she felt embarrassed for some reason.

I was joking, anyway.

Or was I?

I shake my head. What the fuck am I thinking?

This is Katherine Bennett we are talking about.

As she walks in front of me, I can’t help it. I lower my eyes to look at her ass. Even if it was covered by the winter coat she wore. I can still picture it in my mind.

Not that I ever saw it personally, just what I saw when she wore a bathing suit.

Fuck!

Why does it have to be the winter season at this moment?

I instantly go hard thinking of her ass.

“Aren’t you coming?” She shouts when she is almost at the door.

I wish!

“Yeah, yeah. Don’t get your panties in a bunch. I’m right behind you.” I reply.

Why did I mention her panties?

Why did I say I was behind her?

I can’t get that image out of my mind.

I’m screwed.

Now I will never get it down if I keep reminding myself about her ass, her panties, or being behind her.

Fuck!

Stupid mistletoe.

It all started with that kiss.

I had a glimpse, and now for some fuking reason, I want more.

I’ve never felt such a strong attraction towards Kate before. I had a clear mind until we kissed.

I definitely need a cold shower before I go to bed, especially since we share a room.

“I’m feeling generous tonight. While you wrap the gift, I’ll take care of unpacking the groceries.” Kate suggests while we are putting the last bag on the kitchen counter.

I arch my brows. “Are you sure?”

She shrugs her shoulders. “You did tell me you wanted to be left alone. I’m just going with the program.”

“Didn’t I say when I texted you that I would apologize for the way I spoke to you before I left?”

Katherine lets out a sigh. “You did, but you didn’t.”

I frown, trying to understand her meaning.

Then it hit me.

Oh, I haven’t apologized yet.

Before I can utter a word, she walks away.

I catch up with her and hold onto her elbow to prevent her from moving further away. “Hey, freckles. I thought you were giving me a hand.”

“I thought you were apologizing,” Kathrine replies as she retracts her elbow from my grasp.

I clear my throat. “I’m sorry, okay!”

“Can you repeat that? I didn’t quite understand you.”

A frown appears on my face. “I said I was sorry.”

With the tip of her finger, she taps her lips. “I’m not convinced that you’re sincere.”

I look up at the ceiling as she kept irritating me.

I smirk suddenly, seeing the mistletoe over our heads.

“What are you staring at?” Her lips part in surprise as she looks up. “You’re not serious?” She takes a step back.

Without thinking, I take her hand to bring her to me. She doesn’t fight me as I bring her lips to mine.

It only took a second to realize what I’d done. I take a step back. We both look at the other.

I am about to say something when Kate beats me.

“Uhmm…I accept your apologies. I’m going to take care of the groceries and you.” She clears her throat. “You’re going to wrap your gift.”

Once again, she walks away from me, but this time, I don’t go after her.

I was caught up in the moment. I don’t know if it was the Christmas lights coming from the trees that illuminated her beautiful face perfectly or because of that stupid mistletoe that reminds me of that kiss. I just knew I had to kiss her.

What the fuck have I done?

A sense of panic overtook me as I realized I wanted more.
