Chapter Chapter Thirteen
Hailey’s POV
“Feel the power flowing through your veins. Just try to access it.” Esme said.
It had been five days since I started practicing magic. I knew for sure that I had the power to control four elements. But all I was able to do were small and simple stuffs which was really annoying. The worst part was that it really took a toll on me. Even the simplest spell made me weak as if I had ran a thousand miles nonstop. Esme said that it was natural and I shouldn’t lose hope. But self doubt just kept eating at me.
I had done the same with the other elements just like I did with water. For fire I burnt the charcoal. For earth, I turned the dried leaves to fresh, soft green leaves and the most difficult was trying to control the wind and make those pieces of paper fly in the air. But all I could do was lift it out of the container. Every single one of these tasks was small yet too damn difficult. If it wasn’t for Liam’s constant assurances that I could do it, by now I would have definitely given up.
Now that I had understood my power, Esme wanted me to enhance it to do much bigger spells. Currently we were alone at the lake because this was the one place I could concentrate very well and also it was secluded from the pack. I had my eyes closed and was trying to imagine a ball of fire in my hands. My hands were in front of me, palms facing each other as if holding a big ball. But as usual I couldn’t do it.
“Hails look at me.” I opened my eyes and looked at her. Frustrated, tears escaped my eyes. I knew I was making a huge issue out off this. But everyone expects me to be their savior it really was heavy burden on my shoulders. Hastily I wiped them away.
Esme walked towards me with a gentle smile on her face. She cupped my face and wiped my wet cheeks. She pulled my head down a little and planted a soft loving kiss on my forehead.
“What is it Hailey? What’s bothering you?” she asked softly. “Nothing Esme, just you know being my stupid self.” I lied and weakly smiled. But she saw right through it. “Don’t lie to your aunt Hails.” She scolded softly. “Please tell me, maybe I can help.”
I signed and stepped out of her hold and turned my back to her. “Everything is wrong Esme. I don’t think I am that person everyone wants me to be.” And that when the tears started flowing and I could do nothing to stop it. She just held my shoulder, squeezing it a little as if willing me to continue.
“I am a wolf who was weak, ugly and who got publicly rejected by her mate when I had just shifted. My brother loathed me. Everyone bullied and verbally abused me. I loved my parents a lot but when they died, it felt as my protective shield was snatched away. I was targeted by everyone because I was weak, scared and couldn’t stand up for myself.” I walked towards the edge of the lake and looked in it. My face was portraying the sadness and self doubt and pity in me.
“And like the coward I was, I ran away. Then I was found by the Blue Sky pack. It’s been three years and the pain should have lessened but I is just painfully as it was back then. I have changed both physically and mentally. I am stronger and can protect myself. I couldn’t do any of this if it weren’t for those five boys back there , especially Liam.” I turned and faced her and said, “But whatever it is I am damaged, broken and can’t take the weight of being this savior you’ll want me to be. My shoulders can’t take this burden. I am scared Esme. I am terrified.” I sobbed and fell on the grass. She followed me and hugged me to her chest.
“It’s ok Hails. Get it all out.” She said.
“I am so scared Esme. The thought that my failure will cause the life of thousands is too much to bear. I ain’t a hero because I know deep down I’m still a coward. This façade I have is not what I really feel. My heart wants to help everyone but I can’t. I was a disappointment then and I am still one. Luna chose the wrong person to save her children. There are many out there who are much more stronger and capable than me.” I was tired. My tears had dried up but it felt good to tell someone what I was feeling. Esme just kept her hold on me and I was very grateful. In her arms it felt warm, motherly and home.
She pulled back and held my face. I noticed she had tears in her eyes too. “Hailey you have every right to be scared. Even I am. But that’s what makes you different. You are so strong Hails. You have no idea just how strong you are. You still survived after all those things your old pack made you go through. You survived that and right know I am looking at a girl who has proved everyone wrong. Your will is your anchor Hailey.” I whispered as her eyes roamed my face.
“When I look at you I see a girl who has emerged from the depths of darkness. Your eyes hold confidence and your power radiates and screams magnificent. If you look at yourself like everyone else does, you will know exactly what I mean. Know this, there may be many strong girls out there who may be better than you, but Luna chose you. Out of all of them you were chosen because there is something unique about you. Remember that.” She firmly said.
I nodded and hugged her again. She kissed my head and said, “As for now, I want you to forget everything. All I want you to know is that you are my niece and I am teaching you some witchy tricks for fun and to pass the time. Can you do that for me?”
“Yes. Yes I can.” I whispered. “Perfect then let’s get up so you can show me just how huge a ball of fire you can make. Let your imagination loose Hailey.” She smirked wickedly. I may be wrong but wasn’t she just too perverted for her age.
So I once again closed my eyes and with concentration, imagined that huge ball of fire. I saw the ball increase in size as more fire filled in it. As I stretched my hands, I imagined it become bigger and bigger. Suddenly I heard Esme squeal loudly. Slowly I opened my eyes and stared in disbelief. In between my out stretched hands was a huge red and orange ball. I didn’t feel any burning sensation although the ball was in my freaking hands.
I laughed happily and turned it around, it was easily the size of a soccer ball. “I did it.” I screamed. “Yes honey you did.” She smiled and her eyes held pride.
I looked down at the ball and brought my hand closer to each other as the size of it became smaller and smaller until it just disappeared as my palms touched. It felt so surreal yet nothing could ever be more real than this. Esme ran and hugged me. We pulled back and laughed.
“Keep that imagination intact and I swear we won’t have a problem. Now do the same with the other elements in mind.” She stepped back. “Let’s try water. You can do this Hailey.”
So by the time it was dusk, I had successfully made a ball of water, dug a hug hole in the earth and created a small tornado on my palm. It was just awesome and I felt elated. We held hands and made our way to the pack house. Both of us had huge smiles on our face. I knew I will always be scared but I promised try and fight it for all those who I love. That was a promise I knew I would fulfill till the day I die.
As the pack house came into view, I noticed Nate and Kevin walking towards us. “We were just coming to get you’ll. Come on in , dinner is ready.” Nate said. We nodded and made our way to the house.
Kevin looked at us suspiciously. “Why you guys smiling as if you just won a huge lottery?” I laughed and Esme replied, “Because my sexy Kevin we did. Let’s go in so Hails can tell you all about it during dinner.” I laughed at Kevin’s impatience as he and Esme walked forward with him begging her to tell him.
Nate hugged me sideways and smiled down at me. “You ok, little girl?”
“Yes. I guess I am.” And I knew it was the truth. Smiling we entered the pack house.
