Chapter Chapter Nineteen
Hailey’s POV
The scenic beauty passed by in a blur as we drove along the interstate towards USA. The trees were just a green trail. It was just after late morning and the sun rays were falling harshly over us making me feel hot and stuffy. I hated this summer kind of weather. Everything I looked at made me all the more anxious and angry at the same time. We had left around ten in the morning because I was stalling a little from going. Well could you blame me? I was scared shit of the outcome. That had pissed Liam because he was really the most punctual person on this freaking earth. Well after shouting and more shouting and then some or maybe a lot of cooing I left the pack house.
It had been an hour since I stared out of the window with a huge pout on my face. Well I was a drama queen on rare occasions and I guess this was one. So now totally bored of looking out the window I turned to face Liam whose eyes were glued to the road. As I stared at him a smile broke on his face.
“I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist this face for long.” He stated. Huh what rubbish.
“You wish mister.” I bit back but couldn’t help to stop that small smile to form on my lips because he was kind of right but I was too proud to admit it.
“Ha-ha, whatever.” He smirked knowingly, stealing a glance at me before he returned to watching the road.
“Man I wish Ethan was here.” Kevin mumbled.
“I swear if I didn’t know well, I’d think you guys were gay.” Tyler joked. Kevin gaged at his comment.
“Please Ethan is like my brother from another mother, mofos.” He defended.
“I miss Nate.” I whispered. Liam took my hand and squeezed it lightly.
Nate had to stay back to take care of the pack in Liam’s absence. I didn’t like it one bit, because he was like this anchor to my swirling emotions. I wanted all of them to be with me when I become this huge mess of vulnerability. But that would be selfish of me. He wasn’t beta just for name sake. He also wanted to come and be with me but duty calls. Ethan had stayed back with Nate as he didn’t want him to be left alone. He was such a darling because I knew that he too wanted to make this trip for my sake but didn’t want to leave Nate behind to manage the pack alone.
“Liam,” I called out getting his attention. “Hmm” He replied as he swiftly dodged the ongoing traffic.
“Where exactly is this place we are going?” I asked.
“It’s a cottage Hailey exactly on the border of our packs.” He answered.
“How come I never heard of it?” I asked knowing that during my time in that ‘pack’ not once was such a cottage ever mentioned nor was it when I was in this pack.
“It’s a long story Hailey.” He turned to look at me.
“Well if you noticed I am not going anywhere.” I deadpanned.
“Hailey is right. Even I haven’t heard about this place.” Kevin said poking his head between us.
“Fine let’s stop here.” He said, as he slowed down near a small building with a board reading Food plaza. “We have some time to spare, so let’s freshen up and eat some food.”
All of us hurried out of the car and ran towards the food like hungry hounds that had been starved for decades.
“Children.” Liam muttered us he saw us run away leaving him alone to find a parking spot. We just laughed and continued running.
By the time Liam entered we had already ordered and were waiting for it to be delivered. Scowling at us, he sat near me in the booth. I took his hand, making him turn his face towards me. I leaned in and placed my lips on his. He instantly kissed me back. Smiling I pulled back and scooted closer to him, lying my head on his shoulder as he wrapped his arm around me.
“Okay Liam, tell us about this long story.” Tyler replied taking a swing from his beer.
“Alright, most of you’ll don’t know this but my grandfather Aiden and Zachary’s grandfather Greg were best of friends.” I stiffened as I heard his name. Lifting my head off his shoulder I faced him. He just smiled sadly at me and continued.
“Back in those days both our packs were the strongest and largest among others. So because of this friendship we were combined in forces and feared by all. We had huge hunting grounds and had hunting parties with each other. It didn’t feel at all like two different packs. Both alphas were kind loving and just. They believed strongly in friendship and love then war and rage. Many packs questioned us about how two of the greatest packs could ever be able to be allies. But none of them had the guts to face them or challenge them.”
“My father Jack and his father Thomas were born on the same day. Both the packs had celebrations for days since both friends got a nice and healthy heir to their pack. Aiden and Greg trained our fathers together. In fact they did everything together. And that lead to a great friendship between my father and his. Both of them were splitting images of their fathers and held the same friendship.” He paused as the waitress came with our orders.
As she left, we quietly ate our food. My appetite had disappeared and I was restless to know the end of the story. It has always been a question in the back of my mind as to how did so much hatred build up between our packs. But I never imagined that Uncle Thomas could ever have been friends with Liam’s dad. He never did show any signs of having known this pack and actually been friends with the alpha. Whenever he spoke of other packs it was filled with rage.
Liam put down his spoon after finishing his food. Wiping his hands on the cloth and he motioned the waitress to clean the table. After she left he faced us and continued,
“But when both of them turned fifteen, my father showed better skills than Thomas. Dad was faster than him, a better soldier then him, was a quick learner where as Thomas was a slow learner. Not that he wasn’t good, but would always come second after my dad. This fueled his rage. My dad didn’t notice this rage towards him because he was blinded by his friendship. He loved Thomas like a brother, which was his biggest mistake. He hated it when my dad would try to help him improve. He would share all his belongings with Thomas without asking anything in return.” He stopped to take a sip from his beer.
“And like all cliché stories, the thing or the person to fuel the fire of this hate was a girl. Both of them fell in love with the same girl. This girl was called Nora, who was a lone wolf; her mate had died before she was born. She had stumbled on our pack and asked to join us since she hated being a rogue. When dad saw her he fell head over heels in love with her. He had no intention of finding his mate because he believed Nora was his. And Nora was indeed a beauty with flaming red hair and forest green eyes. When my father went to introduce her to his best friend, he didn’t expect that friend to fall for her too. Nora had started to love my dad, but Thomas filled with jealously poisoned her mind with lies that she left him and settled with Thomas.”
“When my dad heard of this, he was grief stricken. He begged Nora to understand that all these were lies and he truly loved her. But Thomas had brain washed her so bad that she wouldn’t even look at his face. When he confronted Thomas, he found out that he loved her too. My dad then told him that if he had just mentioned it, he would have willingly giving up his love for his friend. This angered him even more, and he attacked my dad causing him to lose one eye and he vowed that there will never be any form of ties with the blue sky pack and the black blood pack.” He stopped and his face was a mixture of sadness. I was sure he missed his father terribly.
I never did get a chance to meet Liam’s dad because he had died a few years before I joined the pack. But I heard stories of his loving and kind nature. His always had an eye patch on his left eye and now I knew why. Liam took from his father; he was as kind and loving to his pack.
We got up and made our way to the car. Liam was silent and none of us had the courage to urge him to continue the story. As we pulled out of the lot and climbed onto the interstate, Liam signed and reached out to hold my hand.
“After that our packs never meet and as the years passed the distance grew. Aiden and Greg were heartbroken to see the friendship they once had fall to pieces. But neither of them wanted to hurt their children so they silently ended their friendship as well. Few days before my dad passed away, he had called me and told me about this story and also that there is a small cottage to the west of our borders, surrounded by forests of both the packs. This was the cottage he and Thomas had built themselves when they used to sneak out and meet each other as friends. That cottage has never been used since that day, but it still belonged to my father and Thomas legally. And now it belongs to me and Zach. This is one of the things we have in common.” He looked at me with a sad expression on his face.
I understood from his face that I was the other thing they had in common. None of us spoke; the rest of the ride was silent with each of us thinking about what we just heard. I didn’t know what would happen when I face Zach. How was I to react to him? My wolf wanted me to forgive him and just be in his arms. But she wasn’t thinking logically. What if he still didn’t want us? I don’t think she would last another rejection. Oh Luna, save me from my future. I looked up at the cloudless sky and just prayed.
“We’re here.” Liam said, breaking the silence in the car. I looked beyond the windshield and what I saw made me gasp. The cottage was beautiful. It was two stories high, with light pink walls and dark blue stutters. It had small cracks indicating it was years old. There was an unkempt garden around the house filled with weeds but it didn’t spoil the look. This house was breath taking. It was like a house I had always dreamed of having. The faded white picket fence surrounded the cottage made it feel like heaven.
Stepping out of the car I just stared at the house not able to move past it. Liam came and held my hand as he also viewed it.
“It’s beautiful isn’t it?” He smiled at it lovingly.
“It’s gorgeous.” I whispered. He turned to me and smiled.
“But not as gorgeous as you.” He said seductively. I giggled at his lame attempt to flatter me.
“Wow Liam, I’m shocked. You compare me to a house. Way to burst my bubble.” I faked hurt, as he opened and shut his mouth like a fish. From behind us Tyler and Kevin were holding their stomachs and laughing like maniacs. Liam glared at hem, and the quickly quieted down. Smirking I kissed him full on the lips, feeling him react instantly. His lips felt good on mine.
He licked my bottom lip and I willingly opened my mouth letting him taste me. His tongue massaged mine with such gentleness that made me weak on my knees. I slowly pulled back for air taking deep breaths.
“Well if you guys are done sucking faces can we move in? It’s freaking hot out here.” Kevin grumbled.
“You’re just jealous I’m getting some action and you’re not.” Liam smirked wrapping his arms around me and pulling me towards the house. I poked him slightly in the stomach and he just laughed while Kevin just mumbled something like “I’ll get some action too” and “you wait and watch.”
Shaking my head at him we entered the fence. Just then the door opened and two men walked out. As I adjusted my eyes, a gasp left my mouth. Liam tightened his arms around me, willing me to be strong.
His brown hair had grown long just above his shoulders. It was spiked in the front making him look a year younger. His hazel blue eyes were just the same as I remembered. But now it looked filled with power and intelligence, unlike the eighteen year old funny boy. His body had grown as well showing off the bulges from his arms and his abs. His face was no different. He still held those boyish features expect for a few lines making him look older and wise. But he still looked handsome and sexy like the boy I knew for fifteen years of my life.
He walked towards us with a smile on his face. The sun shined on his brown hair making it look almost golden. As he neared us, his eyes looked from each of us. When his eyes reached mine, I held my breath wondering if would recognize me. His smile faltered a bit but it came back as he extended his hand to Liam.
“Welcome, you must be Liam.” Liam shook his and curtly and nodded.
“I’m Hayden Johnson, Beta of the Black Blood Pack.”
