Chapter 16 Recuperating
It’s the third day after I left the pack grounds. The events that happened finally start to sink in. Maya visits me twice a day checking my wound and judging my mental state. My bloodwork came back and there isn’t anything that stands out, no wolve gene in the pool. She wanted me to visit Doctor Brown, a psychiatrist and a member of the community. But I don’t want to visit the pack yet. I made a deal with her to go after I face Igétas.
Igétas, the Beta of the pack and the most handsome man I’ve ever met. He and Oliver protect me in shifts. I don’t know why I need protection but if they want to lay in the forest for my safety, I won’t object.
Most of the day Oliver is present, and around 7 P.M. Igétas takes over. He sleeps in his wolf form by the front door like a security dog. He actually looks a bit like a German Shepherd if you’ve never seen a wolf before. He is brown with a dark blackish looking head. I need to speak to him soon, but I can’t get my mind straight.
Joe and Rose understand my situation to some point. But of course, they don’t know every detail of what I went through. I asked Maya and Oliver not to tell them and they didn’t. Oliver plays games with me during the day. Joe had me convinced that shooting the barrels would make me focus on the task and not my memory. He was right, and for the past two days, I have been shooting in the backyard for two hours. I am getting better and I am very proud of it.
The school was not amused by my time spent home and I need to go back tomorrow or they will cancel the exchange program. Joe and Rose told the Director that the dog bit me again and the man just told them to put the dog down.
So tomorrow, I will be going back to classes and studying for the exams. Taylor and Tiffany didn’t contact me and I don’t blame them. I didn’t send them a message either. Tomorrow I will find them and show them my wounds. The leg is almost cured and doesn’t hurt so much. My arm is a bit more tricky. The wound wasn’t as bad but it’s more recent. I have only a small bandage around it and the wound is healing pretty well.
“Violet?” Rose calls, entering my room. She probably knocked but I didn’t hear it.
“Yes? Ah! Thank you,” I say and take the cup of tea from her hands.
“Oliver just left. Igétas will be here soon. Does he know you are going back to school?”
She takes a seat next to me on my bed.
“No, I will talk to him when he arrives.”
“He will be good for you.” She says carefully. We haven’t had this conversation yet.
“I think so too. But I need to go at my own pace, and he is pushing me a bit too much. I do feel better when he is here. Also, my family.” I sigh. “They will never understand, I don’t even understand.”
“When was the last time you called home?”
“I messaged them yesterday, but I’ll phone my mother soon. I need some answers. Like why am I a mate? It doesn’t make any sense.”
“Yes, that was a big surprise,” Rose says and rubs my knee. “How is your pain level?”
“I think a two.”
“That’s good, should I ask Igétas to join you upstairs when he arrives?”
Her question makes me smile, “You allow me to have a boy in my room?” I ask with a wink and she chuckles.
“Leave the door open, my dear.” Then she leaves me alone with my thoughts and a nice cup of tea.
I try to look at the laptop screen in front of me, trying to catch up on homework. It doesn’t seem to be important anymore.
“Violet?” a gravelly man’s voice asks and I feel little goosebumps raise and a smile on my face.
“Come on in and leave the door just a bit open.” He appears in my room and he looks beautiful with his dark hair and piercing green eyes. Then I frown. Is he wearing Joe’s jacket?
“Rose wouldn’t let me come up if I didn’t cover more of my body.” He shakes his head and I smile again.
“Rose is a smart woman. Do you want to sit down?” I ask and move off my bed to make room for him to sit. I am aware that I am sitting in my pajamas, but if he thinks I am wife material he just has to deal with it.
“Did you have enough time to think?” He asks. I take a seat on my studying chair and think of a way to start. Let’s just dive in.
“I need to go back to school tomorrow or my exchange program is going to stop. What do you think about it?” I start to get nervous and he picks up on it right away.
“You want to know what I think about it?” he asks, not sure, leaning on his knees.
“Yes, you and Oliver are keeping me safe. I should ask you. I want to go but if you don’t want me to, then we need another solution.”
He is quiet for a little while. “My wolf likes that you asked us, but I don’t want you to stop living your life. It pained me to see you in your room all night, not leaving the house. I want you to go to school, but I would like for the pack boys to keep an eye on you.”
My heart melted by his words. I was so scared that he would want to keep me in a tower with a big lock on the door, but he wants me to have a life. He isn’t as dominant as he seemed the first time I met him.
“You seem surprised,” he notes, and I nod.
“I didn’t think you would agree, to be honest.”
“Well, now that we have tackled this topic, let’s move to another one. Did you think about our future together?” He asks and I almost spit out my tea. I like his way of communicating, straight to the point.
“Yes, I have.” I say, and I see him tense up. He is still and always will be a man and a beast sharing one body. I should never forget that.
I take a deep breath and start telling him what I came up with.
