Mated to the Alpha Knight

Chapter 18. On Call

“So,” Ostana spoke, her mouth full of pizza, Laker placed his arm over her shoulders as they took up the adjacent dark emerald couch. “What exactly do you guys do?”

"Our job,” Laker joked, a smirk playing on his lips, as I watched from where I sat upon the island stool and Emrys looked through the fridge for something to drink; Ostana chuckled and playfully bumped her shoulder into her mates. “Well, I mean, we are in charge of the King's military, spies, all that good stuff. Emrys, of course, is our Alpha-"

“Future Alpha,” Emrys interrupted, finally getting out two cans of pop and popping open one for me, before opening his own; I smiled a thanks to him and took a sip, washing down the pizza. He rested his arms on the granite island top, muscles defining underneath his grey long sleeve shirt. “But basically Alpha, he already directs many people and should be starting to organize his Alpha ceremony,” Rolling his grey eyes, Emrys scoffed, plopping a piece of pepperoni into his mouth. “Oh don't give me that look,” Laker laughed towards Emrys’ expression. “He's just mad he has to get his crown to fit on that big, hot air filled head of his,”

“Crown?” Ostana and I asked in sync, eyes falling towards Emrys, who just shrugged. Laker's phone started to ring and as he answered it, I looked towards my mate with wide eyes.

“It's no big deal,” Emrys chuckled at my surprised expression.

Before I could open my mouth, Laker stood and asked Emrys. “We have details on the latest surge,” Emrys’ smile dropped as he looked up to his best friend, grey eyes turning to stone and body tense; Emrys rounded around the counter, hesitation and determination swirled in those storm eyes. "Order a meeting, make sure Prince Anton is there as well. His father cannot cost us another fuck up,” There he was, my mate, in his true and Goddess given nature, and in that moment, I couldn't have been more proud. Emrys, a commander, a strategizer, a fighter... And he's my mate.

"Of course,” Laker nodded, already furiously texting away on his phone; this was the true Laker - so different from his usual goofy and smart-ass state of my mind.

Ostana and I snuggled on the couch together, watching The Witcher and drooling over Henry Cavill, when I bit my lip. I have to tell her about Emrys, she’s not only my best friend but the closest person I have to a sister - or relative for that matter. Like she always says, we're each other's ride and die. “Geralt is so sexy and poor Ja-"

"Emrys is my mate,” I blurted out, focusing solely on the huge television that Laker said “was best for football games’ and bit my lip, hoping not to draw blood; wondering if Ostana could hear my bolting heart, my palms grew with a cold sweat. Please don't freak out, please don't think I'm weird, please let me explain.

“No shit,” Ostana plopped a piece of popcorn in her mouth. “Jaskier is so cute and I hope that stupid djinn can go to Hell! Look what he did to my poor baby!" Tearing my eyes from the sickening Jaskier and Geralt's oh-so-sweet and tender care, my mouth agape, and looking towards her, Ostana just glanced at me.

"Did you hear me?” How is she so calm?

“Yeah and it's taking longer than Lucifer's fall for you two to hurry up and mate, although I thought we were pretty close this morning as his scent was all over you and you almost killed those girls at the mall,” Blinking a few times, all words were lost. She knew? “I always knew there was some sort of, no offense to your parents, but fuck up. I could be blind and know that Emrys was not your brother.”

Pausing the show, Ostana moved the food off the top of us and sat up straighter.

“Plus Laker told me after we had mated,”

Oh. So I was right, he did know from the beginning.

"You don't think I'm, like, gross?”

She laughed loudly, honey almond eyes twinkling. “Honey,” Letting her reassuring hand on my knee, she shook her head. “It would only be icky if he was related to you, which he is not, and now -since we all know the truth- Ethan owes me fifty bucks; we made a deal.” A moment of silence passed us then before we both broke out in laughter.

How lucky am I to have such a crazy yet down to Earth best friend?

“Have you been eating the lasagna I left for you two in the fridge?”

“Yeah,” I lied, checking out my nails as I soaked in the warm bath; Laker sure had a lot different soaps and bath stuff for guest rooms. This bathroom matched Emrys rooms color scheme of dark grey and blues, a mirror in the shape hexagon hung over the twin porcelain sinks, and the lights were a very modern shape - Laker must like interior design. “It was good,”

"You ate that whole dish already, Celeste?” My mother almost cried. “Oh sweetie, that was quick!” “We were hungry... How's great aunt June?”

"Still alive,” She groaned and I could picture the eye roll. “But at least she remembers who you and Emrys are,” Humming in response, a smile kissed my lips as I heard Lakers front door open and shut; my mom still babbled on about dad and June fighting for a few minutes till I heard Emrys voice call my name when he stepped into the guest bedroom.

“In here,” I called out before lowering my voice to the phone again. “Mom, I gotta go,”

“Is there a boy there?”

“No,” Realizing for a moment that she still thought I was at home, not Star City. “Ostana came over,” “Sure,” Not believing me and warning me quickly the dangers of sex, we said our goodbyes just as my mate walked into the bathroom.

Holy shit.
