Chapter 3 No Need For a Bridesmaid
"Did you hear what Emma said? You have to eat better in the future. You never eat the lunch I pack you! Also, stop drinking!"
She packs his lunch now? The color drained from Emma's face as she comprehend what Jennifer said.
Emma once bravely thought that even if they do meet again, her heart would be calm as a breeze.
After all, it's been 7 long years. 2560 days. She thought that no matter how deep her feelings were, they wouldn't be able to withstand the passing of time. She thought she could stop caring about him.
Or at the very least, be numb about it.
However, Jennifer's words, "You never eat the lunch I pack you", made her feel a mess of emotions that threatened to tear down her walls.
Did he not eat Jennifer's packed lunches because he promised her before that he would only eat the lunch she packs?
She actually hoped for this to be true.
"Emma, are you listening?" Jennifer's voice sounded in her ears again. "There's something I wanted to tell you... William and I are getting married next month. Can you attend our wedding? After all, we were once best friends. Since you are back in Rock City, I would love for you to be my bridesmaid."
The invitation was so sudden that Emma's entire body tensed under her scrubs.
Her lips trembled for a moment, but before she could speak, William already answered the question for her. "We're not inviting her to the wedding."
He lifted his eyes and glanced at Emma mockingly. "Doctor Lang, what are you still doing here?"
The indifferent tone in his voice left a crack on her heart.
Emma was stunned. She instinctively looked at the man on the bed. His eyes were cold and his thin lips were shut.
She should have known that he despised her. It was stupid to think that he still had any hint of affection for her left.
Emma's hands tightened in her pockets.
7 years ago, he told her, "In this lifetime, I'll only eat the lunches you pack." And he also told her, "Emma, you'll be the only woman I marry."
But 7 years later, his one and only... became Jennifer West.
After forcing herself to calm down, Emma gathered her last bit of strength and raised her head.
"Well, I'm busy with work anyways, thank you for the invite, Jennifer. The nurse will come and change the drip later."
Emma wanted to leave before her emotions showed up on her face and gave herself away. She quickly finished speaking and turned around to leave.
The moment she turned around, the sound of the glass cup shattering pierced her ears.
Emma paused for a brief second, wanting to turn around but decided to keep walking. Tears already threatened to fall.
Did he want to hit her with a glass cup but missed? Emma couldn't help but wonder if William really hated her so.
William Montgomery stared at the direction Emma left in with a sullen face, completely obvious to the blood dripping down to the white bed sheets from his hand. "William, don't be angry. Emma is your doctor. If you don't want to, I can contact the dean to change to another doctor..."
After coming out of the emergency room, Emma quickly walked straight into the bathroom and locked the door behind her. Finally she could let her real emotions come through. She clutched her chest and took a deep breath.
Her heart was aching violently. No matter how hard she bit down on her lips, she couldn't stop the tears from rolling down her face.
