“Ellie, you know I’m always up for an adventure, but going Topside? Our own special force guys with Kai leading the pack haven’t returned, what chances do we have?”

“Indaya, I have a feeling something bad is going down, and we’re already sitting ducks. I can’t explain it, but people keep disappearing, and it has to do with what is up there. What if they need our help?”

“I hear ya, but what if you’re right, and our people are just bait to fish the rest of us out?”

Ellie thought about it for a brief moment and then looked directly into Indaya’s eyes.

“I’d rather die at the hands of whatever is up there fighting and trying to save all of us, especially Kai than to wait here for it to come get me, or allow Ronin to end my life like I know he so desperately wants. Maybe whatever is up there, if there is something, will make it quick. Ronin…he’d make me suffer.”

Indaya shuddered and bit her lip thoughtfully.

“Okay, you’re right. Let’s go.”

Between them, they knew some engineering and botany, nothing that was going to be of a survival nature if they had to fight anything, but they had to go down trying instead of playing the damsel in distress. Neither were wired that way.
