Love’s Unexpected Arrival The Bride Who Came Knocking Chapter 8
Chapter 8 You Want to Break Up
Maria wasn’t intimidated by Sylvia’s pressure. She said she would consider it. After saying goodbye to Sylvia, Maria called Chris. She believed that trust should exist between lovers. She wanted Chris to assure her that he didn’t betray their love and that he wouldn’t let another woman get pregnant. However, Maria was disappointed. On the other end of the line, Chris’ voice was cold as he said to her, “Maria, let’s break up. I hope we’ll never see each other again.” When Chris said he loved Maria, she believed it! When he said they should break up, she respected his choice. Maria wasn’t an unreasonable woman, nor was she someone who would cling to a man endlessly. Later on, Sylvia appeared with Ruby again. She asked Maria to leave and gave her an 850-thousand-dollar check. Maria had planned to leave and refused the check. But Sylvia forced Maria to take the check, saying that not taking it showed Maria’s lack of sincerity and that she wanted to get back together with her son. So, Maria took the check and immediately donated it to a welfare house. Three years passed, and Maria didn’t expect to see Ruby again. “Maria, it seems like you haven’t been doing well these past three years. Look at your complexion. If I remember correctly, you’re only 24 years old this year. Why do you look so haggard? Is your work too hard? Or is life too stressful?” Ruby’s voice was sharp and no longer as it used to be three years ago. She lifted her chin proudly, like a proud peacock. Maria smiled, holding a cup in her hand and lightly shaking the orange juice inside. Maria disliked coffee. She smiled back and retorted, “It’s none of your business whether I’m doing well or not. By the way, Ms. Oliver, oh, I mean, Mrs. Anderson, are you so bored that you came specifically to see if I’m doing well?” Ruby’s face turned pale at the mention of “Mrs. Anderson”, but she quickly hid her uneasiness and gritted her teeth. “Maria, you are so uncultured. What did Chris see in you back then?” “Pfft…” The juice sprayed out, and Maria laughed. “What have I said? Do you think ‘slut’ is a respectful address? Mrs. Anderson, when you angrily called me a slut on the phone, did you ever think about how your vulgarity tainted your noble status as Mrs. Anderson?” “Maria, you!” Ruby angrily stood up. Looking at the few drops of orange juice on her body, she widened her eyes in a rage. She hoped she could kill Maria. “I’m sorry!” Maria apologized, pushed the remaining half cup of orange juice in front of Ruby, and said with a smile, “If you’re not happy about it, you can pour it back. Anyway, I’m not as noble as Mrs. Anderson. A vulgar person like me won’t be angered by a tiny bit of orange juice!” Ruby was so pretentious. “Hmph!” Ruby coldly snorted and sat back down. “You’re not going to splash it? Fine then, let it go!” Maria took the half cup of juice back, drank it all in one gulp, and said, “Mrs. Anderson, is there anything else? If not, goodbye! I’m very busy, unlike you who have so much free time!” “Ruby treats you for coffee, and you should say thank you. Maria, were your elegance and education just an act in front of me?” A familiar male voice sounded. Maria looked up and saw Chris’ handsome face. Her heart was pounding wildly. Even after three years, as soon as Maria heard Chris’ voice and saw him, her heart raced. Then bitterness and anger overwhelmed her. Who did Chris think he was that he could speak to Maria in such a tone? Maria lifted her head and met Chris’ gaze without flinching. With a sneer, Maria said, “Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, you’d better make it clear. Firstly, I didn’t drink Mrs. Anderson’s coffee. Secondly, I don’t need Mrs. Anderson to pay for the juice. So, why should I say thank you to her?” After saying that, Maria stood up, reached into her pocket, and took out 5 dollars. Then she placed it on the table and smiled, “Keep the change!” Later, Maria turned around and left briskly. Maria’s wrist was suddenly grabbed by Chris. His mocking voice sounded. “You’re so afraid of seeing me. Is it because you feel guilty and find it hard to face me?” Maria gave a cold snort. “Yes, I’m promiscuous and can’t control my desires. I’m sorry!” Who was at fault three years ago? This was a meaningless question, for the result was the same! Chris clenched Maria’s wrist tightly, his voice ice-cold. “Say it again!” For a moment, Maria was nervous, but she bravely lifted her head, looked at Chris, and smiled mockingly, “Chris, so many years have passed. Don’t you think it’s childish and ridiculous to bring up the past now? Love is nothing more than three lines. I love you, I hate you, and I’m sorry! Since I no longer love you or hate you, all that’s left is ‘I’m sorry’, right? Besides, you were the one who wanted to break up with me, wasn’t it?”
