Love’s Unexpected Arrival The Bride Who Came Knocking Chapter 15

Chapter 15 You Want to Kill Her

The intern, Daniel, had torn his shirt into strips to staunch the bleeding from Mark’s wound. Attempting to console Maria, he reassured her, “I’ve called for an ambulance. Don’t worry!” Maria was on the verge of hysteria, her tears flowing freely. How could she not be worried? Mark could have been crushed! If anything happened to him, how could she forgive herself? If only she hadn’t overindulged last night and woken up dizzy today, perhaps she could have reacted more swiftly. “Mr. Groves, how are you feeling?” Maria clung tightly to Mark’s hand, her voice quivering. “Mr. Groves, be strong. Hold on! The ambulance will be here soon. Don’t close your eyes. Don’t sleep. Talk to me. Please, talk to me! You wanted to work, right? You wanted to earn your first-rate architect certificate, didn’t you? Hold on! You must hold on!” Trembling, Maria reached to wipe the blood from the corner of his mouth. “I’m okay!” Mark managed a smile. He hadn’t anticipated this turn of events, leaving him no time to process the situation. Acting on instinct, he had rushed to shield her from the falling object suspended from the tower crane. “Don’t cry. I’ll be alright. Don’t call me by my last name. Just call me Mark!” “Okay. Hold on tight. The ambulance is on its way!” Maria nodded vigorously, her tears showing no signs of abating. Mark winced in pain, his brows furrowed. It hurt tremendously! He forced another smile. “Or you can call me Mark the architect! I will be a first-rate architect!” “Okay, no more talking, no more talking. The ambulance is almost here!” Maria’s distress intensified as she noticed the persistent bleeding. She observed Mark’s complexion growing even paler with each passing moment. “I’m starting to feel cold, oh!” Despite his smile, Mark was struggling. Only he knew the magnitude of the pain he was enduring. The brick was weighty, plummeting from a considerable height. Only the victim truly understood the extent of the damage it had inflicted. He could sense that several of his vertebrae had shattered. Now, the metallic taste of blood kept surging from his mouth, causing him further alarm. He wasn’t certain if he would survive this. He gazed at Maria, his eyes filled with unspoken words, “Maria, I’ve always wanted to tell you that I…” “Please, don’t speak. Save your energy,” Maria’s anguish was palpable. She dreaded the possibility of Mark not making it. It all started with her. She could have been the one lying on the ground now! “I’m afraid I won’t have the chance to say it later. In reality…” At that moment, the sound of the approaching ambulance drowned out half of Mark’s words. Overwhelmed with emotion, Maria sprang to her feet, clutching the hand of the doctor emerging from the ambulance. She implored anxiously, “Doctor, please. Save him. Please!” Shortly after, Mark was stretchered into the ambulance. Maria swiftly followed, with Daniel trailing closely behind. News of the accident quickly disseminated throughout the design department. Learning of the incident, Scarlett rushed to the construction site in a state of hysteria, catching sight of Mark being loaded into the ambulance with Maria inside. Scarlett patted her chest with a deep sigh of relief, “Thank goodness you’re alright, Maria!” Erika, who had followed Scarlett outside, witnessed the ambulance driving away. Overcome with a sense of dizziness, she suddenly erupted. Finding a secluded spot, she sent a message from a different number, “You said you’d merely embarrass her. Now you want to kill her!”
