Chapter 128
Chapter 128
Cordelia was utterly flustered.
Lorna would clean her room every day. To avoid getting caught with the medicine
Louie had given her, Cordelia had hidden it in her backpack. But now, she had
been busted
Everard pinched the bottle of pills, a smile playing on his lips that didn’t quite
reach his eyes, casting a somber mood over the room they dubbed Midnight
Scent.
Panic flickered in Cordelia’s beautiful eyes. She had a feeling that if Everard
realized what the pills were for, he would be furious.
Thinking quickly, she blurted out, “Vitamins.”
After saying this, she reached out to snatch them back. She was quick, but
Everard was quicker. As she leaned in, he pushed back in his chair, sliding away
effortlessly.
By the time Cordelia stood up to grab them, he had already unscrewed the cap,
taken out a pill, and brought it to his nose for a sniff. Then he looked up at her.
Maybe it was her imagination, but Cordelia could swear his gaze had turned
colder, a complex storm brewing in his deep eyes, as unpredictable as the vast
night sky.
He must have figured it out. The thought made Cordelia freeze.
Maybe it was time to tell the truth.
She was about to speak when Everardlowered his gaze, masking the turbulence
in his eyes, and his features softened in an instant.
“Oh,” he sighed lightly, “vitamins, huh?"
His voice was faint, hollow, tinged with melancholy and disappointment.
He placed the pill back in the bottle, screwed the cap on, and handed it back to
Cordelia.
She was puzzled
Looking down at the bottle in her hand and then back at Everard, he seemed
almost wounded, like a had been abandoned by its owner, unwittingly tugging at
her heartstrings.
Did her actions truly hurt him to this extent?
puppy that
Cordelia slipped the bottle into her backpack and began to eat her breakfast
sandwich, but as she took a bite, she heard another soft sigh from across the
table.
The sandwich suddenly lost its appeal.
Looking up, she saw Everard, who usually fought her for the last bite of the
sandwich, slumped in his chair, the image of dejection.
Cordelia couldn't help but offer him a sandwich, “why aren't you eating?”
He took the sandwich, his lean figure hunched over it. After a moment, he said,
“Not hungry.”
Cordelia looked at him, perplexed, and finally just acknowledged with an “Oh.”
She quickly finished her breakfast. Taking Everard’s hand, she held it for a while
until he finally spoke, “Is this enough?”
Cordelia, who was about to let go and leave for class, was taken aback.
She paused, then held on a bit longer, “...a little bit longer.”
Everard chuckled, a sound more bitter than flirtatious. Cordelia’s heart tightened
further.

When the time felt right, she let go of his hand and stood up, “Well, I should get
to class.
Everard nodded. “Yeah, off you go.”
Cordelia slung her backpack over her shoulder and walked out, but after a few
steps, she turned back.
The light pouring in through the window made Midnight Scent bright, but a
shadow seemed to hover around Everard.
He appeared to live perpetually in the gloom.
Cordelia watched him for a moment before leaving for school. The image of his
disappointed face played on her mind. He must have recognized the pills but
played ignorant to spare her feelings. And now he was so upset he couldn't even
eat?
She felt guilty. Reaching into her pocket, she clenched the bottle of pills.
From now on, she would take one every two... no, three days. Just enough to
suppress a little.
Meanwhile, the “distraught” Everard sat at the dining table, savoring the
sandwich Cordelia had left behind.
Abit cold, but still delicious.
Opening a drawer, he pulled out a bottle of pills identical to Cordelia’s.
Sighing, he knew he had to be the adult in the situation.
He had prepared the same medicine for her, but it seemed someone else had
beaten him to it.
So, he played the weak one. Cordelia was straightforward, and force wouldn't
work on her, only tenderness. Judging by her reaction upon leaving, it seemed to
have worked.
But who had given her the pills? Louie?
A flash of sharpness crossed Everard's eyes. It seemed the group had been too
idle lately.
Cordelia had an art exhibit to attend with Lorna in the afternoon, so upon arriving
at school, she first talked to Latham before returning to the classroom.
As she entered, she noticed Merry acting furtively, seemingly wanting to say
something but holding back. Cordelia sat down, waiting for her to speak, but
Merry remained silent.
During Literature class, Cordelia caught Merry sneaking glances at her phone.
Suddenly, Merry’s phone vibrated again.
She saw a message from the platform moderator, “You'd better clear this up; it's
not looking good.”
Merry’s face tensed.
She hadn't expected the short video she'd recorded the previous day to go viral.
The uproar was because she had accidentally caught Lia's hand in the shot. In
the five-minute video, the comments were abuzz,

-Lol, is that SAT practice question that person is doing? Such speed?
Initially. Merry didn’t think much of it, so she replied to the comment with, “That's
our class brainiac!”
As the video continued to trend, her followers increased by 40,000, with more on
the rise.
The live streaming platform encouraged them to create content partly for
promotion and to participate in an annual broadcaster competition.
Two broadcasters would compete for popularity, and the winner would be
featured on the app’s home page, significantly boosting their profile.
Merry was up against Anni, who had a following of 30-40 thousand. Merry had
been the underdog, but her video's virality now put her in the lead.
Anni's fans were not having it. They started orchestrating a smear campaign,

Currently, Merry's latest social media post was getting hammered with negative
