Chapter 7
Chapter 7 – Being Slapped in the Face
She was destined to be slapped in the face for her proposal during the meeting. It was a good thing that Emma and several other lawyers had not taken it seriously, so when she went to work the next day, no one asked about her progress with Penn, so she managed to avoid embarrassment. However, during the project meeting, Nina Westin, one of the assistant lawyers who joined the law firm at the same time. as her, suddenly asked, “Serena said yesterday that she and Mr. Humphery were high school classmates. Did you contact him? Did you manage to get in touch with him?”
Nina Westin’s question jogged everyone’s memory, and they all looked over at Serena.
In full view of everyone, Serena was on pins and needles and had to think on her feet. “I was in a different class from him, and I asked a few of my high school friends yesterday, but I couldn’t get in contact with him. Sorry, Emma,” Penn had taught her a profound lesson not to overestimate herself and not to take herself too seriously.
“Well!” Emma nodded noncommittally, about as unconvinced as she could be from the beginning to the end that she could reach Penn.
“It’s no wonder she couldn’t contact him. Look at Mr. Humphery’s resume. He studied abroad after graduating from high school and most likely isn’t in touch with his high school classmates.” Nina was the same age as Serena and graduated from Harvard Law School with a master’s degree. A third of the partners in the Justice Law Office were her alumni, so she had an inherent advantage over Serena.
Both of them started working at the same time and are currently assistant lawyers in the mergers and acquisitions department. It was

inevitable that they would compete with each other. Nina intentionally brought up the matter of contacting Penn, ostensibly to show concern about the progress of the project. In reality, she wanted to embarrass Serena.
Serena quietly looked at Penn’s external profile on the projection screen. He was an Oxford University graduate who had won several world-class robotics competitions during her school years and founded Better Future Technology Company in her junior year. The company’s main business was smart home techno’gy. Its products were aesthetically pleasing, multifunctional, practical, and innovative, not to mention loved by consumers. It had remained in the top position of major sales charts for several years. Two years prior, Penn returned to New York to develop the domestic market.
“The acquisition of Better Future Technology Company can be postponed for a while,” Emma said, continuing the meeting. “A concept product they were scheduled to release this weekend was first released by their counterpart, New Vision Company.
Lawyer Charlie Jordan added, “I saw Mr. Humphrey in the parking lot at the airport the night before last, but he was on the phone and I couldn’t interrupt, so I missed the opportunity to meet him. I think it was for the concept product matter out of the country.”
Serena realized that he had really left due to company business that night, remembering that he said goodbye to her outside the bathroom.
Toward the end of the meeting, Emma suddenly looked at Serena and asked, “Did you graduate from Boston High School?
“Yes.” Suddenly hearing the name of the city from someone else’s mouth, Serena almost subconsciously denied it.
“Get ready. Tomorrow, you and Nina will accompany me to Boston for a business trip. I’ll email you the relevant information later.”

This was the first time Emma would be taking them on a project, and Nina happily answered and followed Emma out.
Serena was also happy, but she felt it would have been better if they weren’t going to Boston.
Emma’s email was brief and concise, br fly introducing the project in Boston, which was the acquisition of Boston Food Company by New York Food Company, and their main task this time was due diligence. Emma was probably having them tag along because the bid was not big and they would need the practice.
