Chapter 3 – Red High Heels
He may or may not have seen her behind the car and deliberately ignored her, but Serena chased her to the entrance of the neighborhood before giving up and watching as his car drove away.
On this chilly autumn night, the temperature had already dropped
significantly. She’d hurriedly stepped outside with her long black curly hair still damp, having hastily thrown black suspender nightwear
し
and a black knit cardigan. Her entire body was draped in black, making her pale face look even more depressing. The only touch of color was the pair of red high-heeled shoes she was holding in her hand, which shone brightly in the silent darkness of the night.
After finally catching a taxi to the hospital, the doctors, nurses, and caregivers all rushed over, each with their own words. She only heard. the most important sentence: “We found her on the rooftop of the top floor through the surveillance footage.”
In the dark night, her mother sat in a wheelchair looking into the distance, her figure almost blending into the vast horizon. Her frail body was wrapped in a white hospital gown.
The doctors and nurses thought her mother had run to the rooftop because she couldn’t take it anymore. Only Serena knew that her mother would not commit suicide, especially not in this way, because her mother loved her.
Serena went over to her and squatted down beside her. She held her mother’s hand and softly called, “Mom.”
“You’re here?” Her mother was as calm as if she were at home in the
living room.
“Yes.” Serena’s voice was hoa rse. She was wearing thin clothes and had been standing in the cold wind for so long, she was showing signs of a cold.
Her mother slowly turned her head to look at her, and then her gaze fixed on Serena’s bare neck and chest, where there were red ambiguous marks on her white skin.
Her mother’s gaze suddenly turned cold, and she became emotional She tugged at Serena’s knitted jacket so hard she nearly fell out of her wheelchair. Serena quickly held her, letting her tear at the jacket. The jacket slipped off, exposing her be iful shoulders and neck that were now marked with red scratches from her mother.
“I told you to prioritize yourself! Yourself!”
Punch after punch was thrown at Serena’s body. The doctor and nurse tried to come over to restrain her but were stopped by Serena’s eyes. She gently took her mother and soothed her.
“Mom, I was wrong. I promise I’ll never dare to do it again. I will respect and love myself.” Her tone was gentle and calm.
“Serena, don’t trust men easily. None of them are good.
“I know.”
Her mother’s mood gradually calmed down, and Serena wheeled her back to the ward, where the doctor administered a sedative that finally put her in deep sleep.
“Your mother is usually very stable and cooperative with her treatment. Rarely does she have a situation like today. Tomorrow. we’ll give her a full examination.”
“Good. Thank you so much.”
Fully dressed in black, Serena’s curly black hair was already dry, casually hanging down and forming a sharp black-and-white contrast with the hospital. The sound of her red heels hitting the ground seemed to resonate with the heartbeats of everyone who saw her.
The doctors and nurses had only one word to describe her beauty. “Unbelievable.”
Serena transferred three thousand dollars to the nurse as a bonus, just hoping that she would be a little more tentive in caring for her mother. There was nothing else she could do to help.
It was almost midnight when she arrived home, and all that was left in her mind were her mother’s words about self-love. She was 25 years old and had never been with a man before that night. How could she love herself?
She didn’t regret her first time with Penn tonight and didn’t think it conflicted with self-love. In her opinion, self-love was taking responsibility for everything she did, and she was very aware of what she was doing and was willing to take responsibility for it.
