Chapter 27
Chapter 27: The Old Fox
To meet with Mr. Humphery, one had to make an appointment far in advance with his secretary. As such, it was clear that Emma Thompson from the Justice Law Office had the upper hand in this merger.
Charlie was excited on the way to Penn’s office and frequently adjusted his attire, reminding Serena, “Don’t be nervous when you meet Mr. Humphery later Listen more and speak less, okay?”
It was Serena’s first time seeing Penn at work. He was cold and serious, not one to smile or speak much When they walked in, he simply lifted his eyes and said. “Take a seat ”
This was a far cry from the impression that Serena had of him The few times they had met, he was always gentle and reassuring, making her feel at ease. Of course, those meetings had been in special circumstances, in the most intimate moments If he had been unapproachable, as he was now, it would not have been normal.
As Charlie had predicted, Emma was in the driver’s seat during the meeting. They didn’t need to say much, just listen carefully Emma had come prepared with a clear logic, beginning with her successful past cases before leading into the relevant businesses of Future Better Technology Company and Hands–free Intelligent Technology Company Her skills and experience made her the best candidate for the merger
Emma was clear about her objectives and actively sought to win over
Penn. She didn’t speak a single superfluous word or pay any compliments, but only presented professional data to support her points.
Penn was patient, not interrupting Emma throughout the entire meeting, and even took the time to review the materials that Emma had prepared. It was only at the end of the meeting when he suddenly pointed to a few pages of the report and asked, “Did Emma prepare this report?”
“No, it was prepared by Lawyer Woodsen and needs further refinement,” Emma replied.
“Lawyer Woodsen? As far as I know, she’s just an assistant lawyer. Is Emma trying to use an assistant lawyer to deal with me?” Penn didn’t even look at Serena directly, but his tone clearly showed his dissatisfaction with the report she had prepared.
Serena had worked on the report for several days and it had passed Emma’s review, indicating that there was no problem with it. So, was Penn just trying to find fault with it?
In this situation, she could only stand up and take the blame, humbly accepting the criticism so that Emma wouldn’t take the blame. She was about to apologise when Emma spoke up first. “Mr. Humphery, this report was prepared by Lawyer Woodsen as a general framework. If we work together, we will refine it in every aspect. Although Lawyer Woodsen is currently only an assistant lawyer, she takes her work seriously, is proactive and capable of standing alone. In terms of this framework, it has already covered most of the issues that need to be considered. Later, I will have Lawyer Woodsen refine it further.”
Serena hadn’t expected Emma to speak up for her and praise her in front of the client. She felt a twinge of emotion in her heart.
Penn didn’t comment one way or the other, but he did flip through the report again before finally saying, “I trust Emma’s judgement in choosing people.”
This indirectly affirmed Serena’s work. “However, we haven’t started the bidding process for the acquisition yet, so Emma might want to be patient and wait a few more days.”
Penn showed them out, still not letting his guard down, and despite Emma’s professional competence, she couldn’t read him at all. Charlie, who was usually good at lightening the mood, perhaps it was due to Penn’s strong aura, or perhaps because he was too serious, he didn’t have the slightest opportunity to speak.
On the way to the law firm, Charlie couldn’t help but sigh, “Penn is such a sly fox. He’s too good at hiding his true intentions. If you want to do business with him, you really need some real skills.”
“But how did he know that Serena was only an assistant lawyer? His observational skills are amazing.”
Serena felt guilty, so she knew that as a lawyer, she had to be careful about what she said in any situation. During a high school reunion, she casually mentioned that she was still just an assistant lawyer, and he remembered it.
“The more difficult the bone is to chew, the more meaningful it is.
Xiaoshu, perfect the report in the next two days and personally deliver it to Mr. Humphery,” Emma suddenly ordered.
Will I personally deliver it?” Serena was stunned for a moment and didn’t understand Emma’s intention at first. But as she sat at the law firm desk and recalled the process of going to Future Better
Technology Company earlier today, she gradually understood Emma’s arrangement.
In Penn’s office, Emma said, “I’ll have Lawyer Woodsen perfect it and deliver it to you.”
Emma intentionally used her imperfect risk assessment report to gain an opportunity to meet again. Because in the negotiation stage, this report was not necessary and wouldn’t affect the outcome. As expected, Emma’s success today was not accidental, but rather the result of her experience.
Serena immediately threw herself into her work and searched through numerous cases for inspiration. The previous report was written by her while Emma was abroad. She had written two versions, with the first one being rejected by Emma and the second one passing Emma’s review only with Mr. Jordan’s hands–on guidance. This report was the third version, with Serena adding some detailed parts.
After being so busy, it was already after 9 pm when she returned home. When she saw Penn at her doorstep again, she was a bit surprised. He had left angrily the night before and had not even looked at her while he was at Future Better Technology Company during the day. He had even criticised her as an assistant lawyer. She thought he wouldn’t come back.

“Yesterday’s groceries will go bad if we don’t cook them,” he seemed to be explaining, then stood by the door, waiting for Serena to open it in a very natural way.
“Oh,” Serena thought, wondering if this person had a split personality. He was one way at work and a completely different person at home. Public and private were clearly separated.
Since that was the case, in her view, they were both adults and their intimate relationship was purely for mutual benefit. There was no need to penetrate each other’s lives.
“Do you work overtime every day?” she asked.
“Mm–hmm.” Wasn’t it his fault? He was not satisfied with her report and was reluctant to make a decision on the bidding meeting, making their lawyers busy.
“Do you like this job?” he asked again.
“Mm–hmm.”
Serena wasn’t stingy with her words, but facing Penn, she didn’t know what to say. She even thought that if he wanted to, they could skip the small talk and directly head to bed together. Her sleep had not been very good, but during those nights with him, she had almost slept through the night without any dreams. She enjoyed the feeling and the high–quality sleep.
When she opened the door to her home, she took the initiative to tilt
