Chapter 3. Doctor Johnson
“Myra”; I heard my father’s voice calling my name outside my bedroom door.
“Yes, Dad”, I got out of bed and went to open the door.
“The doctor is here for a visit”; the tone in which my father had informed me did not deserve what I was about to say.
“Mom can’t let it go for once. I said I’m fine and I’d go to the doctor tomorrow. Today was a day ... Okay let’s go and get it over with!” I blurted out regardless of the guests, whom I saw as soon as I arrived in the living room and realized that I had everything wrong.
“Good evening!” The doctor I had never seen greeted me. He was a man with a slight beard, green eyes and brown hair with splashes of silver here and there, he was very similar to the boy who was with him, whom I already knew: the “Beautiful and Damned”. At that moment I realized that his attitude playing doctor in the canteen, that the propensity to biology, and the accuracy in the work were all connected to this.
“Good evening, Myra! I’m Doctor Johnson. See, my son here told me about your severe allergic reaction in the canteen and asked me to pay a visit. If you agree!”
“I’m fine and I don’t need any visit ...” my mother interrupted me coming out of her lair: “Myra, don’t be rude, he’s already here, what does it cost you to do the visit?”
“Mom ... okay”; I said, rolling my eyes in annoyance.
“Let’s go to your room ...” the Doctor said professionally.
“Yes, let’s go to my room”; I said pointing the way.
“Myra, I assume you are allergic to something else as well due to the possession of the life-saving pen, but I have to ask you anyway: are you allergic to anything else?”
“I have some inhalation and some food allergies that I discovered two years ago.”
“And now this reaction, what were you doing?” He asked me writing something on his diary.
“I was peeling a peach.”
“Are you allergic to peaches?”
“Yes, I am and I didn’t eat it!”
“From what I can understand you are allergic to peaches but not to hair, right?”
“Yes, but I didn’t eat the peach.”
“I understand. Let’s see, show me your wrist”; I held out my hand with the palm raised up, he counted my heartbeats while looking at his wristwatch at the same time.
“Lift your shirt please!” I raised my shirt as I was told and with the stethoscope he listened to my lungs in front and then from behind, finally he said to me: “The vital signs are fine, I recommend that you come to the hospital to have tests to check your allergies . ”
“I will. Nathan shouldn’t have disturbed you at all.” I said as he packed his things into his briefcase.
“No trouble at all, this is my job.”
“So you work in the pack hospital?”
“Yes, today was my first shift!”
“I’ll be in the hospital tomorrow after school, I promise.”
“Seems perfect to me, see you tomorrow Myra!” He said coming out of my room. When I went back to the living room I found my brother and Nathan laughing like they were old friends, what was I missing?
“Alpha, Luna, Myra is fine and tomorrow she promised me that she will come to the hospital to repeat the allergy tests after school.”
“Well, very well”; my father said with a relieved smile that reflected my mother’s.
“I’ll take you to the door”; I volunteered and my parents followed me.
At the door, while our parents were talking, Nathan spoke to me: “Sorry if I forced you to visit my father, but today you have a really bad time!”
“Exactly, I had a really bad time! You shouldn’t have disturbed your father, I’m fine!”
“Your brother Val invited me for dinner tomorrow, and your parents said it would be a good way to reciprocate and thank my father’s visit.”
“Well that’s great! I almost forgot, we have to finish the biology work for the day after tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow, after the tests in the hospital, we meet here at the pack house and finish the job, what do you think about that?”
“I think it’s perfect!” Talking to him didn’t seem bad at all, that part of the dark, “Beautiful and Damned” was just a facet of his life, he certainly hid a lot more than this, I must admit, that intrigued me.
“Why did you desert school after lunch?”
“Why were you in the clouds today?” I remained silent. He had given me the idea perfectly, he did not want to talk about it!
“Come on Nathan. See you tomorrow night, Alpha, Luna, Myra”; doctor Johnson greeted us one by one and then thogher, they left.
That evening, at dinner, my brother was on a running train, he never stopped talking about Nathan, his new project and how he was trying to find his mate. Immediately after dinner I went to lie down on the bed and fell asleep exhausted, all that thinking, anaphylactic shock and everything else had completely drained my energy.
The next morning I got up with a big headache. Some time ago I would have told my mother right away, but at that moment it would not have been a good idea. So I got up, went into the medicine cabinet, looked around to see if anyone was there, when I was sure I was alone, took something for my headache. I went back to my room in a flash and got ready for school.
I put on my jacket, I didn’t have time for breakfast, so quickly I went into the dining room to say hello to my family and go out.
“Good morning family!”
“Good morning honey, are you getting cereal?” My mother greeted me by placing a bowl in front of my brother Val. “Thanks Mom.” Val thanked her.
“No, thanks today, no breakfast for me, I’m late.”
“Late? You who are never late!” My brother said giggling.
“So let’s say I have to go early today, is it okay for everyone like this?”
“Eat something on the way?”
“Ok, I’ll take... this one!” I took a red apple from the fruit basket and came out with a smile, meanwhile my mother ran after me screaming: “Don’t forget the appointment at the hospital, do you want me to come with you?”
“Yes, mom and no, mom. I’m no longer a child, I can go there alone!”
“For us parents, you children will always be babies at any age. You will always be my baby, Myra.”
“I love you mom!”
“Me too my darling!” I hugged her, my mom could be a pain in the ass, she could be stressful, she could be too apprehensive, she could be so many things, but she was my mom and I loved her!
As I walked through the corridors of the castle to reach the west wing, I thought about why I was so full of energy. Certainly seeing Nathan played the most important role.
When I got to my locker I found Andrea waiting: “Good morning, Myra!”
“Good morning to you too, Andrea!”
“How are you? I heard the doctor came yesterday ... ”
“I’ll kill him. Val!”
“Come on, you know that your brother does nothing but take care of you, even if he is no longer in school!”
“I know but…!”
“But nothing. You are loved by everyone, accept it!”
Not always, but only sometimes, I think I’m too pampered, too overprotected, don’t get me wrong I really like being considered, receiving lots of attention, let’s not fool ourselves who wouldn’t like to be special in this way?! ”
I’ve never had an enemy in my entire life, ever. I’ve always pondered relationships with their pros and cons. You can say it was because I’m human and therefore not up to a fight on equal terms, or because I’m the daughter of the pack Alpha, but I like to think it’s for my ability to compromise.
Andrea and I went to Abby’s locker where we found her arguing with something.
“Good morning Abby! What are you doing?”
“This damn bag doesn’t want to go in.”
“Can I help you!” Without saying anything she moved aside, rolling her eyes to make room for me and gesturing to proceed. I got out the bag, tidied it up and tucked it inside. “Perfect!” I exclaimed in a grin, raising my hands and letting my work be admired.
“Thanks Myra, you are my savior. Today I got up on the wrong foot!”
“It’s not the first time!” Aurora raged.
“True that, what do you want me to tell you?! I’m a dragon after all!” She said in a haughty tone of voice, touching her hair.
We said goodbye to each other at the sound of the bell, to go each to their own classroom.
When I arrived in the classroom my gaze immediately ended up at the desk behind mine and he was sitting there. I gave him a smile that was returned immediately, after I greeted those present and went to took place at my desk.
That morning I was more active than the previous disastrous day, in fact the time for lunch arrived in a flash.
“So, I heard you had visitors last night!” Abby asked curiously, bringing a fork of salad to her mouth.
“Yes, Nathan talked to his father about what happened here yesterday and asked him to pay a visit.”
“That’s why he seemed to know what to do yesterday!” Aurora said, realizing the situation.
“Val told me he invited him to dinner tonight?” Andrea asked amused.
“You know everything, huh! Yes, my mother thought it was a good idea to thank them and return the visit.”
“So you’ve already done the parenting introduction, then engagement dinner tonight! It wouldn’t surprise me if you were mates.” Abby beamed.
“Calm down girls, what engagement?! I’m human so I’ll never know what it’s like to have a Mate if I find one.” Finding a mate, or the Mate bond, these arguments were one of my sore points. Seeing my parents so in love, hearing stories about how two people are made for each other, the exact half of an apple, two souls linked forever, this was one of those things that made me pissed, not being able to never try It.
