Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Melody did not want to waste any more time with them. She said coldly, “You want to cut ties with me? That’s exactly what I have in mind.”

She turned around and left after saying that. When she reached the entrance, she continued, “I will pay back everything the Tuffin family has given me. From this day onward, my mom and I will have nothing to do with you. Also, I advise that you don’t cause my mom any trouble. Otherwise, I can’t promise what I won’t do for a person who has nothing else like me.”

Melody went to the subway after she left the Tullin residence.

While riding on the subway train, Melody tilted her head as she looked at the scenery outside flashing by.

After two rounds of the subway ride, Melody returned to the rental house in Quadfield.

Before anything else, she immediately took a pair of pajamas from her bed and rushed into the bathroom.

She turned on the shower and let the water run on her body, even before waiting for the water to heat up. She wanted to wash the marks on her body, but she couldn’t rub them away no matter how hard she tried.

As she was rubbing, she started tearing aggrievedly.

Bruises were all around her fair, petite body. They were all resulted from that man’s act of rage from the night before. “Why? Why do others get to have a loving family, but I am a shameful illegitimate child? Even my own biological dad is treating me this way,” Melody thought.

Melody’s mother, Beatrice Sanders, was a maid in the Tuffin residence. Back then, when Yolanda was pregnant, Joseph sexually assaulted Beatrice in drunkenness. He then chased Beatrice out of the house.

Not long after Beatrice left, she found out she was pregnant. She decided to keep the baby out of her selfish motives and named her Queenie Sanders.

When Queenie reached the age of 12, Beatrice realized that she did not have the ability to provide her daughter with a better living environment. She then decided to send her daughter back to the Tullin residence.

It was confirmed that the child was indeed Joseph’s after undergoing a paternity test. He had no choice but to take her in and change her name to Melody Tuffin.

Melody was reluctant at first. However, she could not bear Beatrice’s desperate plea and gave in.

After her shower, Melody lay down on her single bed in the dorm. “If Mom saw how I am living today, would she still have cried and begged to send me back to the Tuffin family?” she wondered.

Beatrice got into a serious car accident the second year after sending Melody to the Tuffin family. She was severely injured. Although she was lucky enough to be alive, she had to remain under observation in the intensive care unit.

Since then, Yolanda and Margaret would secretly instruct their servants to give Melody a hard time. Sometimes, Melody would not have anything to eat. Other times, she would suddenly be scared wide awake while she was sleeping. She even had to consume soup that was added with hot pepper at times.

It was not that Joseph did not realize all these were happening, but he chose to stay silent about it.

Melody let out a self–deprecating laugh as she thought, “Well, life still goes on. I’m sure Mom would like me to make the best out of my life.”

In the following days, Melody did not return to the Tullin residence. She sold a watch that she found in the presidential suite the other night for some cash. However, because she did not want to be caught, she went to a small second–hand shop and sold it for only 75 thousand dollars.

The money she had gotten was directly transferred to the hospital. As Melody’s priority was money at the time, she was not stubborn in finding an internship that suited her abilities. Instead, she found a couple of part–time jobs.

In the morning, Melody would be a cashier at a cafe. At night, she would transform into a waitress at a nightclub.

Although she did not want to be in such a complicated environment, she decided to take the job because of the high wage that was offered.

Fortunately, it was a high–end nightclub, and the head waitress, Ruby, had been looking out for her. Thus, Melody did not come across any trouble so far.

That night, Melody had just sent some alcohol to the customers in a private room. A blond–haired customer pulled her hand when she was about to leave the room.

“Miss, don’t leave in such a hurry. Come and accompany me for some drinks. As he was saying these words, his hands were already touching Melody’s face.

Melody felt disgusted and kept staggering backward. Since that night, she had leveloped a mysterious fear of men.

“Sir, please let me go. I’ve brought the alcohol over. I still have something else to do…”

“What else do you need to do? Do you need money? Here you go. Take this. I have plenty of money, he teased her with a frivolous tone.

As the blond–haired man was tugging her, he also took out a wad of cash from his pocket and shoved them down her collar. As they were tugging back and forth, Melody’s face suddenly drained of color. Her stomach was in so much pain that she had to crouch on the floor.

The man, who was pulling her, panicked when he saw her reaction. He immediately let her go. After all, he did not intend to hurt anyone. He was just pretending to be a big shot.

Melody was in so much agony that she could not move. Nobody went to her help either. After a while, the pain became intolerable, and she fainted.

In the end, somebody from the private room made a call to the nightclub management. It was then that she was sent to the hospital.

It was already the next morning when Melody woke up in the hospital. When she remembered that she still had to work in the cafe that morning. Melody quickly tried to pull out the needles in her hands. The nurse came in just in time.

“Hey! Don’t move! Do you know that you’re pregnant? The drip is for prenatal care. You can only leave after it finishes.” Before Melody could process the shocking news the nurse had delivered, she followed the nurse’s lead and settled back into

bed.

“Young ladies like you really don’t know how to take care of yourselves. You’re already almost three months pregnant! You must take care and rest more.”

“Three months! It was that night!” Melody thought.

Since it was the first time something like that had happened to Melody, she never considered taking any preventive medications when she walked out of Utopia Hotel.

Furthermore, she had been too busy lately to notice her period was late for a few months. All that was in her mind was earning money to pay for her mother’s hospital bills. She never expected that she would hit the jackpot after that one time. Melody sat on the hospital bed, stunned.

“What do I do now? Surely, I can’t have the baby. I don’t have the ability to take care of anyone! Even if I do, giving birth out of wedlock will not be an easy path. No, I can’t! Yes, that’s right. I can’t keep the baby,” she ruminated.

When she had decided in her heart, she asked the nurse, “What should I do if I don’t want the baby?”

“You don’t want the baby? Not even if they are twins?” the nurse asked puzzledly.

Melody was once again shocked by what the nurse had said.

“Twins! I can’t believe they’re twins…” she thought..

“Your babies have fully formed at the three months mark. Besides being a little malnourished, they’re doing well.” The nurse took the tray and left the room after seeing how Melody was not saying anything after her remark.

Melody stayed at the hospital for two days. Nobody visited her during the period.

After finding out she was pregnant, she requested a week’s leave from her boss at the cafe. The boss was nice about it and did not put her in a tight spot..

However, she was fired from her job at the nightclub because of the complaint made by the blond–haired customer the other night, plus there was also the fact that she could not go back to work.

After leaving the hospital, Melody stayed at the rental house for two days. Within these couple of days, Melody had contemplated a lot of things. In the end, she decided not to have the twins.

Thus, she made a surgery appointment at a smaller private hospital, as the fees were slightly lower.

After the appointment was made, she sat on the bus for a few trips and later arrived at Baykeep General Hospital to visit

Beatrice.

With a glass in between them, Melody looked at Beatrice, who was lying in the room motionlessly. She muttered in her heart, “Mom, I have something I’m not sure I should tell you, but I would appreciate it if you could help me make a decision. I’m pregnant. I don’t know who the dad is. I can’t have the babies, so I’ve made an appointment for surgery.” Melody’s hands touched the glass repeatedly. It was as though she could feel the person lying on the other side.

“Mom, are you upset with me?” Melody asked, even though she knew she would not get an answer.

After Melody returned from the hospital, she rested at home for two days. On the third day, she made her way to the private hospital.
